Settle a debate: American and British accents

A coworker tells my friend that he should move to the UK because he likes a lot of British stuff. He says he can't because he's too American. I say that British girls would find his American accent sexy. He says that British guys would find a girl with an American accent sexy, but all Brits think American guys sound like a doofus.
In fact, it went this way, in his mind:
American girl accent -> sexy to a British guy
American guy accent -> not sexy to anyone
British guy accent -> sexy to an American girl and American guys who wish they were James Bond
British girl accent -> not particularly sexy to an American guy
So really, I just think he's wrong, so I asked the internet.

If so I don't find either of them sexy and have never met anyone who lays claim to finding an American accent sexy.

I only know one guy who was from Britain, and he's never really remarked on whether any american accents on women are sexy to him, so I don't know where that really fits.
Besides those two, your friend's chart is actually pretty accurate. English guys really do trump Americans when it comes to sexy voices.

Probably, yeah. My friend said the only time he ever found a British accent sexy was for the character Martha Jones on Doctor Who and I said "what about Amy Pond? Oh wait, that's Scottish..." We figured anyone who wasn't English would resent being told they have a British accent even though most Americans wouldn't know what it means to be Welsh.Druss99 wrote...
What do mean by British? English?
Yes, but you're Irish so you don't coun-- I mean, very good to know.Druss99 wrote...

I'm curious about how anyone perceives another culture really. Without insulting them, which I've managed to do twice now.

I'm Irish btw. And I have met quite a few Americans who told me they liked my accent, although honestly I cannot imagine why.

Well its not like England is an entirely different culture, its a bit like saying Canadians would find an English accent sexy but Americans wouldn't. Its just that the English all smell like cabbage, honest. Plus I'm in Northern Ireland so technically British but thats a whole other subject.
I do know quite a few English people and have met a few Americans. I can honestly say that no one including the English ever remarked about a sexy American accent. Sexy French accents and once a sexy Scottish accent I've heard people remark on, but not American. Possibly because we get so much American TV over here that its just not really exotic.

No, this thread is only open to people considered part of the community. Wait, that would cut out the British side of my question...

Truthfully, I like any accent as long as it's not forced or faked. With this I mean, people from my country trying to have an American accent. I hate that. Because it's flawed. If a person however is a native speaker of their accent, I will like it (well, unless I don't understand it... and I really didn't understand a few Scottish people so far)

I've decided rather than leave it up to the Internet, I'm just going to tell him he's wrong because no one takes guys with an American accent seriously.

I often feel they are incomprehensible or snooty. My apologies to English folks that read my feed. I like you all.

And i never got why Americans say "British" for the English accent it;s just confusing since that term can include Scottish and Welsh people technically and the UK which they also say for England includes Northern Ireland.

That's a good point, and the same can't be said for British TV in the U.S. I know a woman who wondered if closed captioning had improved any (it hasn't) so that she could turn it on while watching BBCAmerica and understand what was being said.Druss99 wrote...

Dude, when I worked in a tourist section of town, the highlight of my day once (my job was boring) was a group of French-Canadians who came by. Because hearing the French language spoken in an accent remininescent of my Minnesotan in-laws is hilarious.Seagloom wrote...
Once in a blue moon I might hear an appealing French or Scandinavian accent. (Not necessarily from France in the former case.)

If I just went off her voice...
Anyway, we Amercians are smarter than we sound. I think. Lots of lads from the states like a women with a foriegn accent. I'm from Montana, where we stress. Every. Single. Syllable. Drives some people nuts.
The accents that have always fascinated me have been Russian, French, and English.

I like you all.I simply do not understand the fascination with accents some have in the United States. Once in a blue moon I might hear an appealing French or Scandinavian accent. (Not necessarily from France in the former case.) On the whole, all accents do is add a layer of complexity to conversation. It means I need to pay closer attention to what the person says to follow them. There is nothing sexy about that.

Dunno about the Brits, but I suspect it would have had much the same result (He has a deep sexy voice).

I don't think I could ever grow to like a Scouse accent, which is spoken by those from the city of Liverpool.

I have a close friend from Sweden with an accent I like. It is not the stereotype most people associate with those countries around here, though. Hence my using the term "once in a blue moon."
