Wait, so did the Internet say my friend is right and that an American guy's accent is never sexy or what?

Judging by the number of marriages between US servicemen and British women during WWII, it would appear that your friend may wish to think about it a bit longer.

hahaha I think thats true of every war we've been in almost, several soldiers out at bragg come back with Iraqi and Afghan women for brides here lately.

Can you blame them men who want actual wives rather then American women who are men with pants and think for themselves first then children and then if you run into the wrong one then you're paying the woman till the child is 18 or in most Liberal Democratic States till 21 or like my state 23

Not at all, I married oversea's as well. And its pretty much true, most of them marry overseas for that reasson.  And its for the best really in a manner. In fact from some Spec ops troops I knew down at Bragg there was a..well, culturally, the Special Forces troops would have happily have fought to carve out a Kurdistan in Iraq if they were asked. Military culture and modern Western culture arn't able to mingle well, I mean at least with your more..."hardcore" units. In fact most of those troops who married Eastern women, be they Asian or Middle Eastern have happy lives and lots of children.

Meanwhile the guys I seen who married typical city women....well it ends like you said, or with her dead after cheating on them. I have yet to hear of any of those women being killed. Alot of men marry more so oversea's today. Its just they don't like the liberal attitude.

Now mind you that doesn't mean controlling, in fact I always talk over family issues with my wife, and we tend to agree on most things and set clear responsibilities. While my modern style sister has went through three husbands, and I suspect cheated on the last one, and generally talks with her amount to "my way or  else" I can buy this overpriced pocket book but your a stupid man!, and lastly you do all the work while I do womanly things (namely her nails) needless to say we hate each other in the sense of the word.

Most men don't want that, unless he likes being treated like a dog. And in the case of well trained and armed professionals such a woman is like forcing same man to live with hippies....its like putting a lion in a pin with some deers. No matter how well trained the lion is sooner or later **** will go down.

Albion refers to the island the people are known as the Pics or Picks forgot how to spell it

Unless I'm mistaken it actually refers to the entire island, Albion is either Greek or Latin and means "White Rock" or something similar, which originally comes from the Scottish Gaelic Alba.
They were called Picts by the Romans (the Romans called them that due to the Picts painted themselves on certain occations), no one really knows what they actually called themselves.

Being English, having travelled the world and visted almost two dozen countries I can easily say my accent gets significantly more attention in the States then anywhere else.

When I was in the States some people didnt really care about my British accent especially around tourist hotspots or in the major cities.  No suprise there really.   But on the couple of occasions I got out of the cities it was really different.

People were constantly asking me about my accent and where I was from and really seemed quite interested in learning more about England and why I was in America. Or more specifically why I was in their town.  :)

It sounds very steriotypical of what you would expect but it was so nice to have happend and its very welcoming.

"Dave" and "Nigel" by all accounts.  There were just the two of them, mad old buggers living in a bothy trying to discover the secret of triple distillation.  Sadly, they died out when the still exploded after a particularly heavy night sampling its creations.

But...but didn't they leave any notes on their progress? Such a project shouldn't have gone for nothing..

Hang on a minute! You're trying to fool me! They were called "Angus" and "Hamish", everyone knows that.

Your getting them mixed up with Angus and Hamish their sworn enemies who invented pigs and enjoyed a good stare. For hours every day they would sit outside the Picts dwelling just staring at them and taking the occassional note. It was this intense staring that led Nigel to commit the error that caused the explosion when he was drunkenly screaming "Wa ye lookin at you?!" while trying one of his more outlandish distilling experiments.

Yeah, I was just fooling you!  They died out following the extinction of the haggis, an animal which was their sole staple.

American men traveling in the U.K can easily exploit their "Americaness" with British women; especially if they are attractive.  I've done it myself, and seen other guys do it as well.

It's natural for people to be curious about people from other countries, and since America and the U.K share the same language and have many cultural similarities (lots of differences still abound however), the curiousity is that much stronger.

It was the same when I came from the U.K to live in the U.S..  I had an English accent at that time (I had lived in London for 4 years), and yes, it definitely piqued the curiousity of the American girls.

The last vacation I took in Jamaica, I met some British chicks from Liverpool, and while I found their accent ear throbbing at first, I eventually began to like it because it was so different Image IPB

Oregonian accents do not exist. I am devoid of an accent unless I throw my voice to sound evil in a cheesy way.

Exactly our speech is just normal and plain and boreing. THough I like how pronouncing our state's name has become the joke of the nation.

This is such a peculiar American thing... Do you guys reckon that if I "scrub" my accent off, I'll end up sounding like you guys?? :P

P.s. Oregon is one of my favourite places in the world *high-5*

And for the record, the sexiest American accent I've ever heard is the Cajun accent.

More like Child Support nothing like trusting a Western Woman and finding out she was just looking to have a baby and could not afford to get inserted with said item and hell you get child support out of it and the entire time the person is gay. I have not dated or touched an American woman since.

Essentially yes. I'm from southern California and while I can act the surfer beach bum role by adding "dude" and "brah" to my speech patterns, I essentially have the no accent or "neutral" accent described previously. You'll find mostly that along the west coast (with some pockets of variation of course) and it can definitely be described as boring. You'd likely end up sounding like us.

P.S. Good to know I'm not sexy. :crying:

Edit: On topic - I think accents on English girls are sexy. Irish girls too.

Wow...  So, everyone in the English speaking world, who doesn't have a "neutral" American accent, adds - literally adds - an accent to a supposedly base, "neutral" American accent?  And this whole time, whilst growing up in Scotland, I've had this phantom American accent that acts as a scaffold for my current accent?  Does everyone here in Scotland remind themselves to "bring" their Scottish accents with them before they leave their homes?  If they forget, do they magically sound American? :P

Seriously, though, I can almost accept the "no accent" thing as a peculiar, colloquial thing that Americans say - but to take it literally? That's a tad anthropocentric isn't it? :P

I don't think we "scrubbed off" our accent. It's simply an effect of watching so many action movies. Normal life just seems so...boring in comparison. *yawn*

I'm glad to hear it, because it was a rhetorical question! ;)  Every American I've ever heard who's claimed that they have no accent has had.... *whispers*... an American accent... *shhhhh*....  I imagine most of them realise that, but say it merely as a colloquialism... I hope.

Think of it this way, you know how the dictionary has prononciation information spelled out next to the word before the definition? Well, some people pronouce words with certain inflection. Like for example Coffee:

As someone mentioned before, someone from MA might pronouce it caw-fee. Someone from the mid-west (mostly Minnesota or maybe Wisconsin) might pronouce it cowf-fee. (I'm simplyfying here a bit obviously.) Well, we boring westerners always pronouce words exactly how the dictionary says, i.e. cough-ee. I only use colloquialisms like "ain't" and "howdy" because it's a part of my family heritage, but never when I'm speaking properly.

I will freely admit, however, that we western types tend to mumble our words excessively and talk at a much faster speed than other American dialects. Those aspects would generally comprise whatever accentization we have.

Edit: It's the General American or "newscaster" accent if that helps. People here have called it by many names.

Second Edit: Minor correction.

I think men with British accents are kinda sexy if they are otherwise sexy. But I think Spanish accents are way sexier.
