Cleanse, templar tree. I'm assuming it's supposed to take away debuffs off of your party, or buffs off the enemy. I can't really think of any time that I've had a debuff on me, or the enemies were buffed. Does anyone know a use for this skill I might be overlooking?
Honestly, I think the templar tree is pretty weak besides the 50% magic resistance. However, I was using a sword and shield tank so I went templar over reaver or bersker naturally.
What is the use of "Cleanse"?

Off the top of my head, the swirling auras commanders make, Sarebaas' lightning spell, the healing aura blood mages' conjour up and if you have the silence upgrade use it if an assassin goes into stealth, it'll prevent them from backstabbing, they just do a pathetic slash instead.
Personally I think the Templar tree was great as a second spec'. My Hawke was built around being a boss killer, Cleave+Frenzy+Disorientate+Assault for damage, the shield helped him survive the boss' attacksand Templar allowed him to stop them using their talents. It's not just spells it works on.

Some enemy commanders can activate auras that buff the goons around him/her. Aside from that, there are very few casters in the game that can even cast debuffs on your party. I had heard mage dispel can remove enemy mage barriers but thats unconfirmed.

Cleanse's main purpose is to waste one of your ability points.

I've heard it can dispel mage barriers, but I've never been able to get it to work myself.
It's one of those spells that has few uses, but you'll be glad you have it when the time comes. Back in Origins, if you got slapped with Curse of Mortality and/or Crushing Prison, Cleanse/Dispel was usually your only out.
In DA2, Cleanse and Dispel are the only counters to those AoE stuns that blood mages and pride demons use. Makes the Hybris fight much smoother, I can tell you that. Of course, it's better on a mage than a warrior, since the latter is more likely to be standing in the thing. Unfortunately, templar magic resistance also reduces the duration of friendly buffs, so that 50% will cut the benefit of Haste in half.

It's diamonds for cleaning up the nasty blood magic stuff that wipes a party in five seconds.

Does it work on that glowy AOE that Hybris throws down?

I thought that it might be able to clear AoE magic effects, but is that only if you have the upgraded version? The normal cleanse is a single target spell I'm pretty sure.

Cleanse is awesome because it's an AoE Silence attack when upgraded. I find that to be quite useful. Enemies using buffs tend to just re-buff once you've used the spell on them though... I think that may have something to do with difficulty level.

Dispel takes care of enemy barriers, and causes some damage when it's upgraded, I've set Merrill and Anders to use dispel on enemy spell buffs and they use it on commanders swirly buff thing and it works, too.

He's correct. DA2 has many skills that are nearly worthless in comparison to the small handful of "real" skills you could be using. That's not spam, it's just common (well, maybe not for everyone) sense.Neofelis Nebulosa wrote...

Its primary purpose seems to be to crash my game to desktop

It removes EVERYTHING. Including YOUR BUFFS.
(Maybe NM FF only?)
So on nightmare, it is just a prereq for the resistance passive. Same as DA:O.
The mage cleanse in the spirit tree seems more effective as it can be used as a friendly dispell/offensive purge/spell interrupt, but doesn't remove all of your buffs.

I have found no use of Cleanse so I too think its nothing more than just waste of your points, a mandatory thing to take like prostate exam but no one wants to take it

I found it to be the best templar ability. It's excellent against mage opponents.

It wasn't my favorite templar ability (Holy Smite was), but I did find it very useful at times. Plus, it looks GREAT on screenshots.
