Why doesn't the game start in Lothering?

I think that going back to Lothering would have been cool, or even just showing them escaping their home.

Varric goes back after the in media res begining, and the opening scene shows Carver (w/ Hawke, if you're playing rogue or warrior) running through the Wilds towards the farm (which was probably on the far outskirts of Lothering).  Next it flashes to the farmhouse with Bethany and Mama Hawke (Hawke will be there if you play mage). Carver bursts through the door and the scene kicks off from there, with Hawke being able to either urge the family to go right now or **** about wanting to stay (maybe not believing Carver if a mage, or just wanting to rest if they're rogue/warrior) but regardless, the 'spawn are coming, and the Hawkes flee. Then you could have the camera rise up and show the smoke and flames rising from Lothering, and the screams as the first darkspawn hit the far edge of the village. Then transition to the game's current beginning.

It would have added a lot of urgency and emotion to the introduction- 'your home and neighbors are literally being burned right behind you, go go go!' and would have solidified the idea of the Hawkes as a family and not just a group of people running away from darkspawn together - which was something I don't feel really got communicated very well the first time you played through.

Would have made for some great imagery, I agree.

But add anything to the family dynamic?  To me, it wouldn't.  The only thing that would have added that for me was more interaction.
