I think he/she has Fenris confused with Anders who is a bottom.  Fenris screams top in my books.

I never felt weird romancing Fenris; he's not exactly a submissive type, especially after being all slavey. I think his lighter build and white hair give people the sense that he's "weak" and thus sub.

I do find it strange that sexuality in this game is sort of a choice as opposed to an inherent part of a characters identity (like it is in real life.) A gay Anders wouldn't be the same person as a straight Anders, simply because it's such an intrinsic part of who you are as a person, and thus as the characters are as people. Yet in the game you can just switch it on and off? Isabela is really the only character that strikes me as purely bisexual in it's utmost honest form, and I think she simply loves sex and loves beautiful people.

LGB status doesn't seem to be as big of a deal in Thedas as it is in our world.

So while one's sexuality and sexual orientation is a big part of who they are as a person, they're not really personality determiners unless, you know, your culture makes them.

I would initially say it has less to do with culture, simply because it's a part of who you are from the moment you're born.  The culture would definitely affect how you handled this aspect of yourself, sure, but it certaintly wouldn't change it.   It's more like...an Antivan has an accent and certain genetic qualities (whatever it may be that makes Antivans look ANtivan, like dark or light hair, big eyes, whatever. I'm not sure what Antivans are supposed to look like in this game.) And these qualities that they can not change have a determining factor in how they develop as people, and yes, I suppose it would affect their personality somewhat, too.   But you raise a good point; Ancient Greece was predominately homosexual partly because it was a socially accepted and even pushed practice (since women had such low standing and were sort of seen as being dirty.)   So maybe culture does have a lot to do with it, but then, in the sense of developing a character, where do you decide that it's a part of who they are, and where do you say "Oh they're only gay/straight/bi because it's popular to be so" ? It all seems a bit want-my-cake-and-eat-it-to to me.

And then I remember it's a game, and Bioware is probably being the kind blokes they are and are simply making a lot of options available to a lot of people for the sake of selling replayability ;)  And I stop caring and start romancing everyone except Merrill.

I like Thedas view on it, Mother is happy for her daughter, even if she likes her pantless pirate.

What part of your personality seems to be determined by your sexual orientation?

A gay Anders probably wouldn't be all that different, personality wise, from a straight one except that he boned dudes.

While in my mind there are some who don't seem homosexual at all, but hey who am I to deny any M!Hawkes that want to bed Fenris, or F!Hawkes that want to bed Merrill? To that end I'd be quite sad if only males could have romanced Fenris.

Everyone wins :D

I have no problem seeing them all with either sex. And 'romanced by one gender' would inevitably mean 'straight only romance' for that character. What are the odds it would be a 'gay only romance'.

Having said that, I seem to be alone in not thinking sexuality is a major defining feature in a person's identity, personality or whatever. So I'm not sure how Fenris for example would be different if he were straight, bi, gay.

I have a hard time imagining Anders with a female Warden. On both of my (unfinished, stuck in act 2) female Hawke playthroughs, I immediately smacked Anders down before he even got to flirting with her. It's like a reflex.

Fenris can go either way for me. He doesn't strike me as someone who's gay (when playing M!Hawke), but it just... works. Like, they're in the kind of relationship built around cutting things apart with large swords, then hanging around either of their mansions to polish their swords together.

"Swords".

"Polish."

I can't imagine Isabela in a romance with EITHER gender, though I can see her in a completely open, sex-filled relationship with either gender of Hawke.

Merrill I can't see with anyone either, because all of my Hawkes instantly develop big brother/sister feelings for her.

The only things I've done as relationships so far is,

I've never had a relationship with Anders. Sorry he just has to die. I let him live on my first play through and never again.

Past that I've had Female Hawke in a relationship with all three. Male Hawke has had a relationship with Izzy and Merrill.

I've never had a guy on guy relationship. Just not my thing. But I'll just admit it. I'm a guy who doesn't want to watch that sort of thing. Though I'm perfectly fine with 2 females. I know it's a double standard. I just have no reason to apologize for it. Just like other players have no reason to justify or apologize for how they play their game. It is all our own games to play.

So far i only played female Hawke and i only romanced Merrill...

But i think it is just a preference, i have never been able to mix men with romance...
Anyway, Merrill works best for my females, she sounds so... Realistic when she says "She's amazing and beautiful, how can anyone not luve her" to Isabela..

Isabela I can romance with a male or a female Hawke. She's a personality that works well with either and she puts it out there.

Merrill is...a female elf. For some reason, I cannot pair female elves with human men (especially not Vaughn voiced human men) in DA. So this has little to do with any interpretation of her sexuality, although I like her very much with a female Hawke, but my own feelings on the lore.

Fenris could go either way, but I sorta lean towards female Hawke, if only because of the Isabela hook-up.

Anders is, like Isabela, canonically bisexual to me. That being said, as he's my favorite companion from any of the DA games, I got a terrible case of the One True Hawke when I romanced him so now my preference is for Anders to be with a failry well-adjusted, if over-protective, female warrior Hawke who uses sarcasm as a shield and is sometimes totally unsettled by how passionate he can be. He's still bi, though, despite the game's attempts to hide that from the female PC.

I feel it should be at least written into their character, and not be a variable if you play a male or a female.

I wouldn't mind it so much if it's written into the characters that they are bisexual. I love Isabela.

How do you know it's not written into the characters? Being bisexual doesn't mean you have to talk about it all the time.

Then why does Anders feel that it is necessary to tell males that he used to smooch dat mustache, but not women?

Are we looking at the same character design?  bottom=/=submissive, but Fenris is most definitely effeminate.  So's Anders, to a degree.

Well since I only tend to play female characters, i really only see them in one light and tend to get other gender info based on what other people tell me. I'm not sure if that qualitfies as a yes or no answer.

This is an interesting thread. In theory, I can see all 4 LIs with a Hawke of either gender. In practice, though, I am not drawn to pairing Fenris with a f!Hawke or Merrill with an m!Hawke. I can go either way with Isabella and Anders.

I love playing dragon age 2 romances and after the game i can only picture isabela ending up with a female hawke.

Or maybe someone romanced anders, merrill or feneris as a male ot female hawke and afterwards has a hard time imagining them with  a different gender hawke. Or not even able to romance them in a different gender?

What is your preference?

Strangely enough, I see them all best romanced by Lady Hawke.

So...
Fenris -> Lady Hawke
Merrill -> Lady Hawke (Merrill is so tiny that I'm afraid Male Hawke would crush her)
Isabela -> Either... but given her comment about women are good for six things, then maybe she'd be better off with Lady Hawke??
Anders -> Either, but I first tried out his romance with Lady Hawke so... it kind of sticks.

Fenris was a SLAVE people... it's going to do things to your ability to be assertive to grow up your entire adult life as someone's property. All this talk about him being a "bottom" is... well kinda silly without context.

Secondly, if you rivalmance Fenris, let's just say you do not get the "he'll do what I say" vibe from him. Also, if you're a mage I can only imagine the things he's going to do to make SURE no desire demon gets their hands on his squeeze... oh my, did it get warm in here just now?

Fenris does NOT look or act effiminate. <_< People who say that are only saying that because they think he looks like a jrpg character and associate effiminate men with that.

Fenris has amazing and manly pores. There's nothing effeminate about him.
