You have to change the material type. This defines tints. Some items support material overrides (tints without changing material type) but not many.
Generally speaking, in Dragon Age 2, changing a material type only changes its appearance, it doesn't seem to define the base damage or anything. No more 'tiers' in DA2 (baby safe formula?).
Some items have only one 'proper' tint, and using others will make for a very ugly item.
item_properties.gda defines materials/tints (inside 2da.rim). Extract it for the list of material types and change an item's material type either via savegame editing with pygff editor, or by directly editing an item's UTI to change its material type and thus, tint.

Thanks for the quick response. By "editing an item's UTI", do you mean altering it in a savegame.das or do you mean in some other location?
EDIT: After looking through 2da.rim again, I'm assuming that you meant I should codes from item_materials.gda and insert them into saves. Testing this method now.

The method mentioned above does seem to work, thought the tents you have to work with are a bit limiting.

Still looking for a way to edit the uti's in the hope that there is more flexibility there.
