I just played through a game and started it with my desktop shortcut with:

"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age 2\\bin_ship\\DragonAge2.exe" -enabledeveloperconsole

Now, I'm trying to start a new game and no matter how many times I double-check my KeyBindings file to make sure it says F6 for the console command (not that I'd changed it since I just finished the game that successfully allowed me to use the console with that command), yet when I load the game and hit F6, it's acting as if nothing's happened.

Anyone have a clue what's up with this?:crying:

Uh...does the tilde not work? I always just use that. Unless you rebound the key somehow, of course.

I use the Tilde in DA:O, but in DA2 I programed the F6 key. It worked great through an entire game, now it refuses to do anything.

With version 1.0 I was able to use -enabledeveloperlauncher with my shortcut. When version 1.01 came out, I had to add this to DragonAge2Launcher.xml:

find
<true action="execute" file="${BINARIES_DIR}\\DragonAge2.exe" path="${BINARIES_DIR}" autoquit="true" />

then add

arguments="-enabledeveloperconsole"

between "true" and /> so it looks like this:

<true action="execute" file="${BINARIES_DIR}\\DragonAge2.exe" path="${BINARIES_DIR}" autoquit="true" arguments="-enabledeveloperconsole" />

I don't need to have the -enabledeveloperconsole switch in the shortcut any more -- this is enough.

Edit: If you've already done this, then I have no clue.  Good luck though!

What software do you open the DragonAGe Launcher with?  I tried using Microsoft Office Excel and I set it to XML, but it doesn't recognize the file.  So I tried notepad, and couldn't find what you said to look for.  For me, the DragonAge2Launcher is an exe file, not an xml file.

I use notepad, but any text editor would do.  You need to find the xml file -- it's in the data folder in the main app directory (the one in program files (x86), not the one in the documents).  The path will look something like c:/program files (x86)/dragon age ii/data

edit: If an exact copy/paste of the line above doesn't work, try just searching for

<true action="execute" file="${BINARIES_DIR}\\DragonAge2.exe" path="${BINARIES_DIR}" autoquit=

It's not the complete line, but that's just in case I have an extra space or something at the end.  You'll still need to put the argument in where I said above.

Hi, ejoslin, I did already have that line in there, and it's still a no go. It's so strange that it worked for one game, and all I did was start a new character, and now it won't work. Thanks for trying to help.

Did you add the

arguments="-enabledeveloperconsole"

to it? Gah, I'm sorry that it didn't work :/ It's what worked for me. Ah well, I hope it works out for you :(

Here's the line:
<true action="execute" file="${BINARIES_DIR}\\DragonAge2.exe" path="${BINARIES_DIR}" autoquit="true" arguments="-enabledeveloperconsole" />

If I were you, I'd try removing the keybinding and see if it works with the tilde key. It is weird that it's not working for you any more :/ When you load up your old save, does it work with that?

I tried the older save game where it had worked, it no longer works. I switched to Tilde, it doesn't help. This is nuts, isn't it? Thanks for all the suggestions.

Guys you don't need the short-cut and the xml just one does the job (IE change the xml and dont matter about the shortcut I never bothered with that bit.)

Any way l here what I recommend you do:
1) start the game and see if after pressing the open console command if your charter moves when you press a move key, if yes then watch your typing as your making typos.

2) You guys have still got your dragonagelauncher.xml backed-up I hope? If so restore your back-up ideally you should do this when ever you patch the game (and create a new back up after patching). If not you need to either get a copy from some one or reinstall DA2. Then try the game and use the console and see if it works now, since you got -enabledeveloperconsole in the shortcut it should work (remember to see if movement keys work or not instead of typing a command).
3) If that dont work then re-add the console enabling text to the xml now hopefully it will work.

Personally I think your find that your problems are either typos or a corrupted dragonagelauncher.xml file.

kotli, Thank you for trying to help. I've already had the game working with the short-cut(and editing the xml), however it just stopped of it's own accord, and simply refuses to allow me to use the console. It's frustrating as hell, I can assure you.

Well I think we could do with some more info (that more the better with this kind of stuff really) have you patched to 1.01 or not? (If you had this might be what messed it up if the problem first occurred after patching) Its possible that patching changed the xml file.
You done step 2? If not I recommend doing so to rule out possible corruption in the xml file.

After that there's only two options left for you a full reinstall or no console (what ever the cause a reinstall will fix it).

If you reinstall and think that patch 1.01 is what caused the problem you dont need it unless you been having problems with running the game.

Kazren, nothing you are describing makes any sense, technically.
If you had not yet tried, I would suggest reinstalling the game.
Back up your character saves first though.
Once you do that, and since you are using a physical disc copy, I recommend only using a separate shortcut directly to the DragonAge2.exe with the -enabledeveloperconsole flag on the end of the target.

One other thing you might want to check, if you are running under Vista or Win 7 and are not on an administrator account, it may not work. Also try running the direct shortcut with "Run as Administrator" and see if that makes it work again. I don't know what else to try at this point.

Additionally, installing the 1.01 patch would not make it stop, I have been using it without issue.

Edit: I just thought of something.. Have you installed either of my Launcher theme mods?

I finally found a cure. In the Key Bindings were 2 lines about the console, so I set one with the ~ and one with F6(the lower one), and the lower one works. Finally. It looks like this now:
OpenConsole_0=Keyboard::Button_Tilde
OpenConsole_1=Keyboard::Button_F6

Top one should be ::Button_Grave

That will make the tilde work.
