As an American, I'd never be able to say, "Oh, that's a <insert region here> accent". But I'd agree that some variation would be nice, except that most people we deal with - companions aside - seem to be FROM Kirkwall, so having a similar accent makes sense.
That said, I saw the accents as generic English, and for the Elves, they sound Irish to me (yes, I know it's apparently Welsh, just saying what it sounds like to me). Sebastian sounds classic Scottish.
I'd be okay with variation, but as you point out, some regional accents - true in every country, btw - leave non-natives with a distinct "what the hell did you just say?" kind of thing. Which makes for a poor way to deal with a verbal medium.

eta: Sebastian's voice is amazing. Sadly, what he says makes me furious & I've come to hate him with the white hot intensity of 1000 suns, but I'd still keep him around - should he come after me as threatened - perhaps on a leash, and make him read nice books or something.

There are a few Lancashire and Yorkshire accents thrown in, but they're few and far.
I just think it's funny that most fantasy settings go for Received Pronounciation. Obviously the accent has to be intelligible to people (let's say a heavy Scouse accent wouldn't be!), but still...NPC's at least. Half the time you don't listen to them anyway

Most of the Dalish are Irish, it's just Merril that's Welsh. Sebastian is actually Glaswegian Scottish though very light - if you want to hear a proper Glaswegian brogue, look up Billy Connelly.

They could have tossed in a bar patron or two, maybe someone down at the docks, kind of like the gossips from DAO, with some unintelligible accents.
I'd have LOL'd at that.

I love Varric but please the many times he says it. It actually reminds me of something about the game i don't like, enemies in pieces. It too much, and ridiculous. The combat animations are good, why ruin it.

Maybe that's what humans from Seheron and Par Vollen sound like. If you ever go there, the contrast with the flat Standard American Midwest accent of the Qunari would he HILARIOUS.

I mean, I simply cannot picture a Merrill with Galician accent, a Hawke sounding like a Madrid guy or an Isabela with Cádiz accent.

I would like a wider variation in accents in general, rather than limiting it to regional dialects in Britain. The provinces of Thedas all sound very different, culturally, and clearly a lot of influence has been drawn from different parts of Europe, with bits and pieces taken from other cultures scattered around here and there. There were instances where the British didn't gel with me. Isabela was a good example, she's from Rivain, which sounds like a mashup of Spain and Portugal in terms of culture. I'd think with such an exotic background and appearance, she'd have an accent to match.
True! The Spanish accent would have added extra sassiness to the character as well.
...but then I have a weakness for a Madrid accent

Merrill's Welsh voice made me happier than anything in this game. It must be continued!

As a Brit, I find it really funny that 90% of the English accents in the game are 'cockney' or 'Upper class'. I'd kill for a thick 'Scouse' or even a heavy 'Brummie' accent on some of the NPC's just to see what the international reaction would be (probably 'eh? WTF did he just say, I missed it').

I'd miss those types to. I liked Morrigans style and the voice actor of Zaheed who did several roles for Origians.
PS: I am glad they changed Merril's voice actress for DA2. Good choice on their part.
