Good question... and sorry you're having troubles.  The most common cause would be a scratched or smudged DVD.  Another possibility is a dirty or defective drive... DVD errors will sometimes occur, for example, when the machine tries to read the second layer of a DVD9 (many commercial DVDs are "dual layer", meaning there's actually two layers of data.  Most recordable DVDs, for example, are single layer... 4.7GB capacity as opposed to 9+GB).

Besides cleaning one or both, you can also download the game using your CD key.  Of course, it's a BIG download... and in your case, before doing so, I would suggest you delete any material already installed and use something like CCCleanup to remove any registry keys related to DAO.

The EA Download Manager (which need to be installed first)... is located here:

Had the same error, could not install after 22.3%. DVD would act like it's reading but no data being transferred.
Solution, pulled DVD drive out, installed another one I had on hand. Worked like a champ. Extracted all files and installed game.
Seems like the DVD disc of the game may not be compatible with some dvd drives

If you purchased another version of the game and wish to switch to the EA download version of the game, install the download manager now known as Origins. After install, log in using the same account you registered the game to. On the top right corner next to your user name will be a little gear icon. Click on this and select "Redeem Code". Enter your CD key (this works for any EA PC game published in 2009 or later). The game should now appear under the "My Games" tab to the left of the window. Download and install from the icon in the My Games window.

Actually, in my personal experience, a dirty disk or a damaged one isn't nearly as common of a problem as simply a disagreement on the part of EA's installation software with many brands and models of DVD drives, particularly those capable of writing as well as reading disks.  I think EA has included some trickery to make disk copying more difficult, resulting in these failures.

IMO, the best "fix" is to borrow an external DVD drive to use, although copying to folders on the Hard Drive sometimes works, as well.  In my own case, I put the disk in the old Sony drive I have in another older model PC, and ran the game install across my LAN at home to the game machine.

(Edited three hours later for this P.S.)  I just realized that if they don't force everyone to accept the Origins Connection from now on, and I do buy another EA game, I'll have to move the old DVD around somewhere.  That particular old PC needs a new CPU Cooler, and it's just so old now, it's hardly worth the trouble to work on it any more!

RaenImrahl is full of crap and i'm sure he knows it. This is a common issue, you can google it and see. There is likely nothing wrong with your disk or drive, it's the crappy software that EA is too cheap to remedy.

I had the EXACT same issue as you, the extraction stopped at the EXACT same file for me. Though others have had it stop on different files, the issue is always the rar extraction and EA is VERY aware of the problem but won't admit it on any public forum I've seen, and I searched quite a few for a workaround.

You'll have to register your copy online then download the game. There are other ways but I would'nt reccomend any of them unless you have a bit of programming experience.

Posted Image A side note to EA:  Stop bsing your customers, you lose business that way.

Okay, My brother got me Dragon Age Origins Untimate Edition for christmas, and as I go to install the game, it says I need to activate the game, which I did... But it stops installing at 22.3% and freezes. After 5 minutes, it says installation failed, I tried it again and same thing. After restarting my computer and googling the problem, I found that I needed patch 1.05

But as I downloaded it and go to install it, it says i need to install the game... Many forums say this problem has happened to them before and they don't know what is going on...

ok for a bit i had the same issue what it could be is that you could have previous saved files or any reminants of DAO or it could be a computer problem cause as soon as i switched to laptop it is installing nicely
