Is there any chance of dueling the Arishok with a rogue or mage?  I got him down to half health with my rogue before getting stunned to death (literally) ...any solution to this?

My first play though was a rouge, and damn was that battle near impossible!

The only way I was able to beat it was by running around in circles to egg him into rushing forward with his horns, then get a few hits in and GTFO, rinse and repeat. Sometimes you can get a couple hits by backstabbing him, but it's friggin risky.

Best of luck.

Yea thats how I got him down to half health, but I was hoping that there would be a way to duel him without kiting him like a weakling lol... :(

Mage can avoid knockback with Unshakable + Rock Armor. Unshakable pushes Fortitude, Rock Armor increases damage mitigation. Together, they reduce knock back from normal hits.

The Mage way to defeat the Arishok is to stunlock him to death using Petrify, Gravitic Ring, Winter's Grasp, Cone of Cold, Horror, grenades and whatever else works. Generally, you're auto-attacking him while he's stunlocked. It's boring and it takes a long time, but it's not really what I would call hard.

I wish! For all their talk about "strategy" in this game, Bioware certainly didn't make this battle very strategic. It's the same thing with a mage, run in circles and hope to hell that he doesn't even breathe in your direction.

I hate the battle, it's boring, so again I send you my words of luck!

The solution is: don't let him hit you.

I've dueled him with a rogue and a mage and I got slaughtered with a rogue. Surprisingly enough, I fared way WAY better with a mage - with particular help from the Gravity Ring skill from the Force school.

That one passive skill that grants you +100 Fortitude helps a lot, too. I find that what makes the Arishok battle difficult is that he knocks you back a lot. Take that away and it gets much less complicated.

It was easy for my rogue. I had dual daggers and the shadow spec and the Arishok has a bug concerning aggro.
If you place the decoy he will stopp attacking you even after the decoy is destroyed and even if you attack him (as long as you do not summon the dog).
So all I had to do was place it, run behind his back attack him and then go and make myself dinner while my Hawke slowly killed him with the auto attack from behind.

I've dueled him with all 3. It's basically the exact same strategy. Kite around until he charges, then unload a couple of cds, keep kitting, rinse and repeat. It is possible to get a few more hits in with a warrior, if you can time his blade "dance" or exploit the transparency of the pillars as a 2 hander, but all in all it doesn't change the entire approach or the fact that the encounter is poorly designed at best.

yeah the run around in circles strategh for 20 to 30 minutes is draining and booring. Im hoping my archer build with assasin and shadow will make it "easier" to evade and deal tons of damage.

Force mage has it extremely super easy. Just grab the various CC spells available to you and cast them to keep him stuck where he is.

Surprisingly enough, it is true that a Force/primal or Force/elemental (frost) mage has it way easier than other builds, mostly due to gravitic ring. Shadow specced rogues also have it easy, because decoy can bug him so easily, it even makes you wonder if this was ever tested.

The mage battle was the easiest for me. Run around screaming like a little girl, wait for him to run into a wall and gets stuck for a moment, then FREEZE him, then hit him with a the basic staff attacks mixed in with some Rock Fist or Hand of the Maker.

The rogue was the most annoying, with hit and run, back stabbing and jumping away, and a WHOLE lot of running around screaming like a little girl. Also, make sure the party members who were with you when you got to the Vicount's place have their friendship bonuses, even though they can't fight with you, you'll still have their bonuses.

Never been able to duel him on my rogue but mage was quite easy. Petrified him and hit him with everything then run around 'till petrify recharges. It is do able but I felt really silly and not really heroic. Champion of Run-around-screaming. :/

My first run though I had to duel him with my Mage Hawke completely Spirit Healer spec'ed...all I had were heals, mind blast, and dog.

I gave up after I noticed the battle had lasted over an hour; to get the Arishok down to half health, and he used a dag blame potion on me.

After that I re-loaded my save and said "FINE JUST TAKE ISABELA"

Later I played through with my Two-Hand Reaver-Hawke and hacked him into little Arishok bits.

I took the Arishok on Hard with both Mage and Fighter. There was no running around. With Fighter, I took SnS, turned on Shield Defense, and tanked him like a boss. Every time my Cleave/Battery combo was available, turned off Shield Defense and went to town, then turned it back on.

With Mage, I killed him with pure Elemental Force. Gravitic Ring to hold him (don't use Firestorm or he charges out!), then Winter's Blast and Cone of Cold to slow him while GR was on cooldown, Combustion Grenades to make the difference. Of course, I didn't go melee on him. so some distancing was necessary (being a Mage and all), but it hardly running around. It felt more like a bull fight, since he was constantly trying to use his Charge attack to close distance.

I've managed with both my rouge and my mage =) but yes. The future Champion of Kirkwall was pretty much running around in circles. Don't know if that was too impressive. Next time that Fenris says that I should do the duel I might just chicken out =)

I've done both. As a rogue, stealth yourself whenever your health gets low, move away, let your attacks cool down and move back in. It takes a while but it's not hard. Every rogue build should have at least a little bit of stealth - it's how you get out of the fray when things get too much.

It was extremely hard to defeat him as a warrior in hard difficulty and it was rather easy to defeat him as a force + blood mage in same difficulty. I'm playing as a rogue ans in near the end of Act II, so I'll have to see how rogue plays out. But so far, my rogue is doing incredible well with other bosses, I think it will be much easier if I just be careful about getting caught by Arishok.

Tried DW Duelist / Assassin (no stealth), 2H Berseker / Vanguard, and Spirit Healer / Bloodmage. Mage was the only one I've beaten him on, with crazy regeneration and basic attacks only.

As I said, IMO all rogue builds need stealth!

Going to play a rogue again on my next playthrough. Last time I did an assassin build, might focus on archery this time.

Rogue:
Disable all your modes, stack crit chance/damage and mana/stamina. Backstab and run in the opposite direction. Since the move automatically "teleports" you behind goatman, you can put a knife in him while he swings at thin air. Then just take off in the opposite direction. Kite him to death this way. When he does his charge you can either a) Follow him to his stopping point where you can get in a quick Assassinate or B) drink a stamina/health/elfroot potion. Just kite him around this way. Whatever you do, do NOT use Twin Fangs (takes too long to leave the stab animation) and do NOT stay in range for longer than 2/3 hits.

Mage:
Same kiting concept, load up on the stuns/immobilizes and blast him. CoC, Imp Horror, Corrosive Walking Bomb, Grav Ring, Crushing Prison, Winter's Blast, Petrify/Dessicate, they're all good choices. Lay off the AoE unless you're feeling super duper lucky and you can cast the spell in 3 seconds max. I got off Hemo a few times when he was recovering from his charge but staying in blood mode is kind of risky since it negates any potions.

I didn't have stealth on my rogue and only assasinate as a damage skill. Still could kill him, albeit it took a while with running and waiting for cooldown. A nice thing to know is that he's susceptible to stun, so if you have that it will help. It did ****** me off a couple of times when I was totally away from him and his attack still hit me somehow. And take enough potions with you obviously.

He's still easier than that stupid stone ****** in the deep roads...
