Even my angry FemHawke Mage character likes Varric, he's open and honest in his own way, while planning 5 things that usually work out, heh.
How can ANYONE be rivals with Varric?

God..I don't know. It wouldn't be possible - I freaking loved that guy. By far one of my top favorite Bioware companions ever. I loved the crap outta that little guy.

Varric definitely is a rare companion. He's the first in a long, LONG time who's almost like the real protagonist that your character just happens to hang out with. He has a whole lot of influence, power and connections. He's smart, daring enough to do things his own way and take initiative, and uniquely capable of handling stuff on his own. Cares about his friends without getting all ego over it, and hella useful in a fight too. And his dialogue is pure excellence.
Beyond a doubt one of the brightest gems in DA2, and one of the best companions ever created for, well, any game.

I tried, but he certainly makes it hard to achieve. He gets +friendship from just about everything.

I'm not sure if it is possible to get full rivalry from him. Humm .. just being douchebag for all his companion quests may works.

I made Varric my rival on my first playthrough with an aggressive character. I didn't mind doing it. Why? Because my character did things Varric didn't like

If you go 100% cut throat aggressive it is easily obtainable. The more ruthless and anti-mage you are the easier it is to max rival with every character.

I was on Rivalry with him as well in my first walkthrough. I played an Aggressive Hawke, and it was pretty easy to score Riv points that way, without actually being a douchebag all the time. He just likes sarcasm and smoother ways of dealing people. My Hawke obviously did not.
Also, I was pro-Mages. So I don't think that being against mages has anything to do with it. (But I might be wrong, of course.)

Varric is quite a stunning character. While I like a lot of characters in DAO and DA2, Varric is a really binding character. He's not intrusive nor pushed on you and is friendly and fun and he is quite neutral meaning he stands for what the common man stands for nothing more.

Try to be an angry greedy douchebag as much as possible to avoid small friendship increases, then act like a total putz when the stuff with his brother comes up by trying to get him to spare him, then have him kill him and guilt trip him about it for the rest of the story.

I like to think the reason my femHawke ended up "alone" in Varric's story is that they secretly ran off together but he doesn't want to tell Cassandra that.

They live underground like moles. Dwarves are nasty little things. Don't trust them.

Trolls are not in DA2, but they sure do thrive in threads on these forums ^^

According to Varric's Dragon Age wikia page, to earn rivalry with Varric, choose aggressive responses that glorify
violence and combat, and show a lack of interest in his stories, his
friendship, and your place in Kirkwall.

Easily. My female Hawke is aggressive and prefers to settle things with violence. Varric, the coward, naturally doesn't approve.
