Potential companions:
Leliana + Cassandra (Would make sence as starting companions if you happen to be their partners in the search for the champion and the hero.)
Justice (As himself this time, (regretfull?) in some strange host (Shales old body? Traded a human body for Shale's golem body? Might be a good story here.))
Rest would be completely new.

NPC storygivers:
Morrigain + Flemeth (ongoing drama)
Merrill (As a third party to Morrigain + Flemeth drama)
Alistair (Still the king, important business as always)
Sebastian (Some Holy War)
Shale (in some form.)
Fenris (Magefighter nr. 1)
Sten (clearly he has alot more story to give.)
Zevran (in some new comical fashion)
Ohgren (another comical scene)
Isabela (yet another comical and slightly sexist scene)
Shianni (Alienage Redhaired girl) (She seemed to have another part to play.)
Knight-Commander Griegoir, together with Knight-Captain Cullen. (What happent?)
Carroll (The guys guarding the boat to the mage tower, he may be brought in as a comical scene where he fails his guarding duties yet again, and get scolled by Griegoir (again))
Queen Anora (Prob. escaped and tries to backstap Alistair (teamed with Sebastian?))
Lanaya (The New Keeper of the Dalish.)
Charade ((Hawks cousin) What was the story there)

Time related NPC/Companions:
Mhairi (She died right away, what was her story?)
Duncan (doh)
Knight-Commander Meredith (what was she like before? Would be cool if she was real sweet. :))
Ser Otto (The blind templar)
King Cailan
Decimus (radical bloodmage)

Tamlin was tainted, but his fate is truly unknown after passing through the mirror. Remember, his body wasn't found, but there was blood near the shattered mirror. He *May* be dead, or he may be in some fade like environment.

As for Loghain, in my DAO game, Alistair had him executed...Now that is what I call dead :)

Actually, Tamlin turned into a Shriek due to the darkspawn corruption he suffered by passing through the mirror into darkspawnland and then your Dalish warden kills him.

Shale won't be in the next game because she's a DLC. Same with Sebastian.

We know for sure that Leliana and Cassandra will be in the next game, not sure if they'll be party members or not but they'll be there in some capacity.

I feel like it will be more Warden-oriented this time, since you'll be in Orlais where there are a ton of Wardens with terrible French accents. Sandal and Bodhan will be there to sell and enchant, and you'll learn more about Sandal and his abilities. You'll probably have a talking Darkspawn as a companion, something like the Architect's right hand man. And Cullen will be back in some sort of capacity, most likely as the head of a group of templars and mages trying to restore order.

Your tasks will be to kill the corrupted darkspawn, kill the rebellious mages and templars, and kill Flemeth and whatever kind of army she musters up to take over the world. Unless they go with the "Flemeth is a good guy" angle.

Bottom line is that you'll for sure have at least 2 warrior companions, 2 rogues and 2 mages (just like the previous 2 games) and a DLC companion who doesn't factor into the story, only Bioware's bank accounts.

I've discovered that Connor (The Arl of Redcliffe's son) is a flag for save game imports. That leads me to add Connor to my list as well for potential recruits.

I want completely new companions, without any kind of connection to the previous games. Well...almost.

1. Saarebas. I never got over the loss of Ketojan, and I don't think I ever will. He was the perfect minion, with so much potential. And I felt the connection instantly.

It's such a rare thing. Most of the time the companion is thrust upon you, even as you resist it, but this time, he was denied you. We humans always want what we cannot get. Wouldn't it be perfect to get a companion only if you really, really struggle to get him? Wouldn't it add to his worth in your party, each time you look at him and remember - I tore him away from death's hands, I wrested him from the fate against all odds, and he's mine because I took him, not because he was offered me on a plate.

Of course, there always have to be default companions for those who don't want to struggle for them, but I noticed that every default one has a shadow - a second one. Aveline is not an opt-out, but you can refuse Fenris. Same with Isabella, you can get rid of her, but not of Varric. You can have your own chosen party instead of the default one if you wish.

I also liked it that Ketojan was a true Qunari, not an outcast. It added to his worth, somehow. The thing I didn't like about Sten was that he was with you because he had no alternative. He can't get his place in Qun, so he settles for second best - you, because his only other option is death. You're, essentially, getting a cast-off. It would be very different if you could steal a Qunari away from Qun. Even if this one's only other option is death, too. It would feel like you're actually winning in a serious competition.

Not to mention that Sten doesn't REALLY need you as a leader, while the Saarebas certainly does. Looks like he's so used to following orders that he wouldn't know what to do without someone commanding him. In fact, you could see that Hawke's mere presence was enough to help him maintain focus and control his powers, after they were attacked by thugs. It truly felt like Hawke and the Saarebas would complement each other nicely like a great battle unit.

Besides, I like the danger. It would be awesome to be threatened by a companion who'd lost control, but you still have a degree of influence on him even now, when he's almost far gone. I think it's thrilling. Not to mention that there could be interesting relationship dynamic with someone who's never been regarded as something other than a dangerous thing.

Oh well, I rambled about him too long and didn't get to the second companion. Maybe later.

Goodness, I hope not! SHUDDER. If they are, I want an option to kill them both. I barely tolerated those uninvited strangers in my estate. Especially after your mother dies and you return to the empty house, and those two are here - my entire family gone, and those two strangers are still alive! Why are they alive? Because they must sell and enchant? Gameplay necessity over story choices? Gosh, did I want to show them both to the door.

Of course, you probably can't kill Sandal as he's clearly not even mortal.

Hmm. I do wonder if you can arrange pushing him off a cliff so that he can stay at the bottom of a crevice forever, never dying.

Totally agree, when they were at your campsight it was a different thing. They knew their stay was "on the wardens terms", and they didnt live with you, only next to you. Ofcourse, his son might do so story if he is turned into some more comical relief, I saw the potential of humour when doing the deep road quest. However, he has to go even furder in "retardness" like a "family guys" (steven gryphon)- kind of way. The way he is now, he just freaks me out, and even though that may not be reason enough for kicking him/them out of the game, it certainly is enough reason to not let them stay in your house!

Hmm.... I have a feeling that Cassandra and Cullen will be companions for DA3 =) that would be really fun. But if the 2 warrior thing still stands it means I won't get any Fenris in this set up. Gahh.... to many interesting companions =) Cullen is a templar and I don't know what Cassandra is but I guess that she's a warrior. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.

My "Guaranteed" Companions for DA3:
Warden-Commander: (Either the Hero of Fereldan; or the Orlais Command will be the main character)
Cassandra: (Probably a 2H Warrior Character)
Hawke: (Doesn't classify as either of the "2" per class; and takes on the class and personality you gave them)
Charade: (Ranged Rogue; Could be searching for Hawke or something because Gamlen died?)

Guest-Appearances:
Alistair: (If he's the king of Fereldan, we all know he'll show up)
Loghain: (If he survived Origins he'll either be ready to die; or make a brief appearance in Orlais)
Anora: (If she's Queen; I imagine she'll show up. Possibly married to Alistair)
Bethany/Carver: (If they became a Grey Warden and survived DA2; then they'll show up at one point - possibly as a Companion)
Anders/Isabella/Fenris/Merril: (Only if romanced by Hawke though; as it was said in the ending they never left his/her side. Will they be a playable Companion; or just a Cameo though?)
Morrigan: (Has to make a return; either as a Playable Character or a "Behind-The-Scene" character like Flemeth. Possibly have a God Child present that'll be 9-10 years old if you went that route)
Leliana: (She refuses to die! She'll be somewhere with the Seekers; and either explain why she didn't die, or continue your relationship if you never killed her)
Zevran: (He's everywhere I say!)
Sten: (If Qunari are involved anywhere; and they probably are - Sten will show up; and possibly a companion)
Oghren/Sigrun/Nathanial: (Only if they survived the ending in DA: Awakening though - they'll probably make a cameo at some point for this battle)
Velanna: (If she survived; she could be interlocked with a story involving the Architect)
Architect: (If he survived; he could be keeping true to his word.)
Justice/Vengeance: (Regardless to if Anders survived or not; he could make an appearance somewhere)
Aveline: (Wont actually be seen; but referenced to back in Kirkwall)
Varric: (Might make an appearance while on a business trip; most likely a reference though)

Just a rough list of ideas... The Warden himself might not even show up, and we could have a new "Seeker" Recruit as the Main Character; which would be just as cool to wrap up the Warden's story.

I would think that any companions in DA 3 who are returning characters are more likely to be memorable but non-central characters in one of the first two games, or fan favorites who people didn't think got enough attention on their first run-through. Most, if not all, of them should have had some degree of plot armor in the first and second games, though- Bioware might have just barely gotten by retconning Leliana and Anders, but I don't think they'll want to try that again.

As I was playing, I thought Charade's introduction felt almost like a cameo, and the inclusion of her being an obvious archer seemed to set her up for more down the road. I would guess, based on the amount of fangirl clamour on the forums, that Cullen will be back as a companion. Feynriel and Cassandra are also possibilities, I would think. I'd personally like to see that Tal-Vashoth mercenary, but I don't know that he was popular enough to warrant a comeback.

I don't think they'll bring back many, if any, of the previous companions for the third game as companions- definitely as cameos, based on what their fates were, but not as companions again. It might be fun to have Varric back as the narrator and a companion, but I think that with a new protagonist, they'll want new friendships and romances as well.

I don't think that the warden or hawke will be companions at all, in any way. There were just too many variables in appearance, personality, etc. to make it reasonable to voice a companion and write dialogue for either that will make a player feel like they are actually spending time with their previous characters.

Just my opinions.

I'm thinking they might go with Cullen, Nate, Varric, Fenreil (is that how you spell it?), maybe even depending on your LI in this game, maybe they will have a twist and have that char in there too...

I would be highly impressed if DA3 is actually able to do handle even the visual import of custom Wardens and Hawkes from the preceding games.

I hope Cullen is there. If he is made Knight-Commander, it might be hard to have him as a companion because he has duties, but he could join the PC for a quest or two. If he left the order it would be interesting to have him as a companion. There is that Lyrium thing that is forced on the Templars after they take their vows. Where would he get a constant supply of the stuff?

With Hawke's disappearance, Your LI could be companion (non romancible like Aveline.) PC might be able to flirt with him/her, but hopefully he/she would remain faithful to Hawke.

Charade is cool. I'd like to see more of her. Nathaniel or Charade as an Archer companion. Zevran has to do more than a cameo. But having Zev might be more difficult depending on his outcome with your Warden. You might have killed him. I want another Qunari companion. And this charcter could be a tie in if the DA 4 goes to Tevinter.

I really hope that DA3 does not feature companions or characters that died in previous chapters of the game. I know Leliana, Feynriel...etc have their followings, but for me retcons and plot holes cheapen the choices the player made in earlier games. I would love to see Bethany in some sort of capacity in DA3, but given that she has a 2/3 chance of surviving the intro and 5/8 chance of making it alive to act II, I am pretty sure that any appearance would only be a cameo

My choices would be Varric and Isabela. Along with Bethany, they are the only DA characters I thoroughly enjoyed. Some of the other suggestions people made like "Cassandra" and "Charade" are interesting, but I would not care if they were excluded from the game. I am partial against Cassandra because I would like just one DA game where I don't have a chantry nut job in my party.

Truth be told, I can see DA3 using Hawke as a companion character, with his being VO'd and all. I also quite like the idea of Cullen joining the party, he became quite a likable character in DA2, and it seems pretty obvious that Cassandra was being angled all through 2 as a party member in 3

1. Cullen
2. Cassandra
3. Feynriel
4. Either a female Qunari or a Qunari Mage

Also Tamlen is dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. How do I know? Because my Dalish Warden killed him, that's how.

Personally I would prefer all new companions instead of reusing those from DAO and DA2. I wouldn't mind some of the NPCs from DA2 being "promoted" to companion. For me this goes mostly for Cassandra and Cullen. I like both their stories, and the voice acting was amazing in DA2.
Other than that by all means give me a bunch of new ones. I have faith that Bioware will be able to create new characters, whom I'll like just as much as those in the first two games.

All of these I would bet on, especially as many other have suggested that Hawke will be a potential companion. I don't know if I buy DA3 being in Orlais, though. There are just as many hints about other lands as Orlais:

- Rivainni
- Par Vollen
- Antiva
- Tevinter
- Nevarra
- Anderfels

I would actually think that DLC may resolve the Orlais - Ferelden - Free Marches situation before we even get to DA3. All of these seem at least as likely as Orlais to me. Tevinter receives more discussion than anything else in the entire game.  It would also make sense as reversing a ton of the tropes of the series (mages running everything, male chantry members, etc.)  If any of those happened, it's all up for grabs who or what could be a companion. And remember, in certain endings for DAO Shale and Wynne head off to Tevinter.

The nobility of Orlais overthrows Empress Celene since they feel she has become too much of pacifist, too willing to appease Ferelden.

She is forced to flee in exile to the Free Marches and she can meet up with the Warden disguised as a refugee and join him as a companion and possible romance.
