So I'm sure I'm not the only one who is reminded of another critically acclaimed fantasy RPG from a few years ago when I think of DA:O. How do you think BioWare's new entry into the fantasy RPG genre will stack up to Oblivion? Will DA:O trump Oblivion for the title of best RPG of the decade, or will it fall short despite BioWare's strong history and RPG experience?

Oblivion is the current holder of the "best RPG of the decade" title?

Are you trying to troll?

Honestly, I thought Oblivion was a huge pile of ****. I played for a few weeks, and was incredibly bored. The quests, the plot, everything felt like it was randomly generated by computer algorithms without actually hiring writers. It turned into a slog (especially combat, yuck!) and I totally lost interest. It burned me so much I wouldn't buy Fallout 3 despite loving the first two Fallout games and waiting for a sequel for a decade.

Oblivion plays like an MMO single player.  And the only thing which makes an MMO passable is the other people are there.

So yeah, I hope it's better than that.

Theyre completely different types of games besides the whole sword and magic thing.

Aye, I loved Oblivion (as well as Morrowind) but DA os going for a more linear, story-focused experience, whereas Oblivion was very open-ended, but suffered from lackluster storytelling.

I felt Oblivian was a great game. I had a good time with it. It occupied a lot of my down time while in the Middle East in 2006. :)

I'm sure DA:O is going to do a great job as well. I have never doubted Bioware.

Even Fallout 3 is better than Oblivion. And considering the sheer amount off bugs with Fallout 3, that's saying something.

Bethesda games like Oblivion are open world lore exploration dungeon crawls, Bioware games are story driven geographically linear RPGs. Oblivion doesnt actually have any Role Playing besides how you would like to make things dead.

Edit: I say that because while I loved Oblivion(PC) it certainly wasnt really an "RPG", at least not how I define the term.

Oblivion was a sandbox game. You had freedom to pretty much do whatever you liked. An open-ended game like that would have difficultly developing a strong narrative... and predictably, Oblivion's story wasn't the greatest told.

DA:O will be quite the opposite. Devs said this isn't a sandbox game, so don't count on exploring the map freely. The story, however, should be something special.

If you liked KOTOR and/or ME, chances are good you'll also enjoy DA:O

Other than being a fantasy rpg, the games are nothing alike. I'm sure I will love DAO, but I hated Oblivion.

I never saw a bug with Fallout 3. Morrowind was better than Oblivion. The elder Scrolls games are fine except for the combat which is terrible. Walk forward, click mouse button until you or they are dead. Repeat.

Oblivion was a good game, but for different reasons than this. just because it diverted from a good mould and because it plays differently to a traditional rpg is no reason to say it was terrible.

That said I still think that DA:O will far outstrip it.

Best RPG of the decade is Kotor hands down. Anyone that disputes that is just silly in the head ;)

Oblivion is really not the best choice for RPG of the decade. Maybe it's just me, but storytelling is one of the main reasons I play a game. Oblivion's storyline was painfully boring. Now, if you compared Morrowind and DA:O, then I think it would be a more even match, because Morrowind's storyline was far better than Oblivion's.

I know what you meant, I'm saying I think KOTOR2 was ten times better than KOTOR until the incredibly craptacular endgame.  If Obsidian had been given another six months to finish the game, it would have been incredible.

I thought Oblivion's combat was quite refined, I would be very happy if the combat in DA was as good. Morrowind's combat was pretty terrible though, one ofthe areas Oblivion really showed improvement in.

KotOR 2 in general felt unpolished, they tried a lot of cool stuff, and I agree that given enough time it could have been better than KotOR, but I don't think they managed to achieve KotOR's level of quality in the time they had.

KOTOR2 is crap until you leave the *second mandatory planet*.

This is not good.

As for Oblivion, it's a totally different sort of game.

Oblivion/Fallout 3/Mass Effect are mild Action RPGs or more specifically for the latter two Role-play Shooter. You can't really call them "just another action RPG", as the benchmark for an action RPG is games like Diablo or Dungeon Siege, which severally lack role-playing elements compared to even Oblivion.

DA:O should be a traditional RPG. Though depending on the amount of combat present in the game, it may even be categorized as action RPG. To be honest, I think any RPG that allows third person camera and keyboard for movement control can be called an ARPG.

I'm really wondering if a lot of the Fallout 3 haters actually played the game. Oh, if you played it on PS3 it doesn't really count. :P
