I hope class and race construction/editing is as easy as it is with TESedit.

Bioware has quite alot off experience in catering to the fan/modder comunity. Don't think you'll need to worry too much about it.

Morrowind was better than Oblivion, and Baldur's Gate I and II were better than both. /randomopinion

Seriously, though... Oblivion just didn't have enough in-depth story for me, and the main questline was a joke in terms of length. The best thing about Oblivion is the user made content. I can't even THINK about playing Oblivion without a few key mods.

To answer the OP's question... DA:O is going to make Oblivion look like absolute crap, not that it would have to try hard to do so.

Edit: Jeeze, spacing is screwed up when using the quick reply.

They can when they want to, NWN had great modding tools, but not so much with KotOR or Mass Effect.

Oblivion's strength is in exploration and getting lost in the world combined with the large amount of content available. It is not a game designed around a strong central story, but neither was Morrowind. That's just the way of that series, and it's great if you like that sort of thing.

Yeah, they've had a really poor track record on the issue recently.

The leveling system in Oblivion was so stupid because of its emphasis on using minor skills that I finally gave up and sold my copy after three different tries.  If I had a PC version I could have gotten a mod, but if a game is only enjoyable with a mod it isn't the "best the rpg of the decade."

KOTOR they made on Lucas Arts whims, not sure in which way that affected the lack off modders and comunity features. Mass Effect was originally inteded to be xbox exclusive, which has its own issues. Neither game as far as I can remember promised extensive modder and comunity features. (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong btw). Dragon Age on the other hand has more or less been promised to cater to the modder comunity.

Use the S.P.A.M. mod

Oblivion was a day one purchase for me, and I loved it, especially when I compared it to Morrowind (which I had also beaten at the time). I found that compared to Morrowind the combat system in Oblivion was far superior. Morrowind's combat was choppy--all Cliff Racers need to die, seriously. I loved the Shivering Isles expansion pack and the Knights of the Nine DLC, and as much as I try to play goody-goody characters, I loved the Dark Brotherhood missions. I have to be honest, I bought Assassin's Creed because I wanted more of that sort of thing. (I know it's an entirely different--and awesome--game, but that's just how my thoughts were going at the time.)

And now I've just lost my train of thought...

My point is that I think Oblivion was a great game (and the Daedra quests, those were frustrating but good) and I think DA:O will be a great game, arguing about whether one is "better" than the other is a moot point, IMO (unless you really hated Oblivion) because it really depends on what you're looking for in an RPG. I loved riding my horse around in Oblivion (even up mountains) but I hated it when an NPC wasn't where they were supposed to be because their schedule told them that they had to be somewhere else. In case you couldn't tell, I like RPGs in general. So what if Oblivion's graphics are better or that DA:O has more sidequests? I couldn't care less as long as the game keeps me engaged.

And now it's 1:30 in the morning over here, so I should really get some sleep so I can be up nice and early to pick up the DA:O novels.

What excactly does S.PA.M do btw?

All this talk off Oblivion has made me consider dusting off the cd's and dig up my giant backup folder with mods for it.

It's all good then, and true enough. Personal taste is just that: personal. Besides, I've yet to see any game that came completely flawless.

@Terwox: Yeah, my PC did the same. I guess it was the certain doom that those things brought. She couldn't run fast enough (those things are ultra-fast), and she couldn't hide. Certain death.

@ Eshaye: Right. That sound is goosebump inducing.

I'm also looking forward to the DA:O toolset, and what the modders can do with it. I build a few things with the NWN2 toolset, but the Oblivion one was a bit daunting, so I only dabbled.

What it does is create a cemented stat regime based off your class, not what skills you used to buff.

So, if you're a knight, for example

You'd get +3 str, +2 Ag, +3 Con, etc

Whenever you level up, regardless of how you got there.

Sounds like something worth trying out, although I always make a custum class when I play. Not sure how that system would effect it then.

You chose a primary and a secondary specialization

I think it's combat, steal and magic

And the combo chooses the stat distro, and you can customize it in game

Yeah, if you use legendary mastery, you can take your stats and skills up to 250, also
