Bacon gives me migraines. Bacon-flavored hot chocolate is just a bad call all the way around.

DA:O and Oblivion are two different type of rpg's. So instead of sitting here thinking about if DA:O going to be better than Oblivion, let's just hope DA:O turns out to be an awesome game that has us all playing for months.. ;)

For me it's the freakin'  feral ghouls in dark underground places, basically just jumping out from a corner and yelling really loudly, often you hear them before you see them... Image IPB They are not hard to kill, their screams are just too sudden for my liking lol.

Try using headphones; I used them one so I wouldn't wake anyone up, and then went crawling around a ghoul infested subway sation and HOLY SH!T was it creepy! Hearing the ghouls raspy breathing and low growls as they shuffled around in the shadows . Since I was playing in the dark and couldn't hear the whir of my computer fans, I got really immersed in the game; I have since eschewed using my $200 surround sound speakers for my $20 earbuds whenever I game

useless discussion... they differ so much from each other, and i loved morrowind and oblivion, and i will love DA:O in its own game type aswell.

really love realistic combat from oblivion... hide behind shield and BAM ... hit back.. and duck again behind a big Ebony shield ;)

Honestly, I thought Oblivion was a huge pile of ****. I played for a few weeks, and was incredibly bored. The quests, the plot, everything felt like it was randomly generated by computer algorithms without actually hiring writers. It turned into a slog (especially combat, yuck!) and I totally lost interest. It burned me so much I wouldn't buy Fallout 3 despite loving the first two Fallout games and waiting for a sequel for a decade.

It should be noted that Oblivion is actually a decent game if you have most of the extra content along with at last check about 1-1.5 gigs of mods installed.

Both games will have pros and cons. You can compare the experience, but it's much like comparing a book to a movie. One is shorter (usually), more flashy but also shallower. The other is deeper, takes longer, but doesn't have quite the range of features (perhaps requiring more imagination) that the other does.

I much prefer Morrowind to Oblivion, which strikes a much better balance between features and depth - Oblivion really lacked a lot of the awesome storylines (apart from the Dark Brotherhood, which was the best of the lot) and extra detail, for me.

It was a great game for the first six months, but after that, I can only go back to it when I've got some large new mod, or in order to do work on mods. Morrowind? I can go back to that in its pristine, unmodded form and play it for hours, still. It just feels so much...better. The atmosphere is more unique, for a start. The quests are more varied, and the landmass feels much larger - the travel time is longer, and you have to pay for fast travel to a limited selection of locations.

But anyway, until I actually get to play Dragon Age, I can't really compare those two games for their experience. And as has been pointed out, the two are of completely different focus, and style. Compare a romance novel with a murder mystery? What's the point?

Though I have been known to make rather long, detailed, and scathing comparisons of Oblivion and Morrowind...I don't want to type another one atm. XD (Not that I don't like Oblivion - I do actually like the game...it just isn't as good as Morrowind).

Mixing the two directly is ill advised, but eating pig candy while drinking hot cocoa is sublime.

Oblivion was good, I did enjoy it on my first playthrough.  After that, it went downhill. Especially the main storyline, talk about short and gave the feeling "huh? thats it?".  Oh how about the Radiant AI they boast so much? Pretty random crap with same voice actors, who couldn't forget the infamous "mud crab" chatter? Also with the exploitable leveling system (finishing the game at lvl 1, with speedrun and area glitch).

The game is indeed open world and it was quite good for exploration and some side quest were pretty nice though.  But the title best RPG of the decade is not for Oblivion baby, best RPG of that year yes. But not the best of the decade for me. People say Escape from Torment was the best of all time, I was too little to know it back then.

So far, the only RPG I find satisfying since Baldur's Gate 2 was The Witcher. Sure people moan and hate the combat mechanic, but the storyline and Gerald was badass (can't believe one of the first complain about this game was about his 'ugly' look).

I feel sad that some people first RPG was Oblivion and made it the standard of what RPG should be look like. Even sadder still that some folks wrote "hay guyz is this game like WoW?" when comparing RPG titles.

The thing I'm looking forward on DAO is rich storyline and gameplay mechanic. Let see if DAO can make a name as one of the best RPG. Time will tell...

I can't believe people even made that stuff. Is there any culinary food you yanks invent that doesn't add more cholesterol?

Didn't read the thread. Just responding to the first post.

Oblivion doesn't even deserve to be mentioned alongside Dragon Age. I actually did enjoy Oblivion some, for what it was. But it's no kind of RPG in the sense that Dragon Age is.

What is the best rpg of the decade is totally subjective. I personally think that it is Morrowind. Perhaps, what the OP means is that Oblivion has been hyped as the greatest rpg of the decade and he wonders whether Dragon Age can live up to this reputation.

I don't agree that Oblivion and DA:O are directly comparable.

I played Oblivion, all the DLC and lots of great player made content so I think it was agreat game.

But DA:O will be less freeform more tightly plotted and have better developed characters and is party based. Oblivion was all about size, freedom and expandablility and solo adventuring.

I loved Oblivion, I may love DA:O even more but while they are both RPGs they're very different games and I see no point in comparing them to decide which is best.

Let me point out that Half-Life 2 has over 40 Game of the Year awards. Just because media dubs something the Game of the Year or Roleplaying Game of the Decade that doesn't mean it actually is. Hype always results in better scores.

Best RPG of the decade is Kotor hands down. Anyone that disputes that is just silly in the head ;)

I started reading this thread and only got this far before I absolutely had to reply. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Baldur's Gate 2 came out in 2000, right? I'm not saying KotOR isn't one of my favorite games, but Baldur's Gate 2 wins everything hands down. Everything except Broken Sword and Monkey Island, but they're neither RPGs or products of this decade.

Agreed. Its hard to beat the epic nature of Baldur's Gate 2, especially if you use any mods for it.

Oblivion was an ok game, i bought the CE because i had loved morrowind so much. Like others have already stated, the story wasn't perfect.. Also, their fabled "Radiant AI" system.. just didn't work.

I think DA:O can definitly top that

i've played both Oblivion and Fallout 3 extensively but can never bring myself to replay it. Why?

They are very open but EMPTY worlds without mods. Even within the settlements or populated areas there is no DEPTH.

Oblivions story line was sub-par with combat lacking and repeatative VO's that ended up making you want mute the game. Fallout 3 is a glorified "noob" FPS with a slight storyline.

Oblivions "Close the hell gate" quests were worse than grinding and quite frankly could make anyone want to kill themselves.

Fallout 3's consequence system was crap. Bad Karma for blowing up megaton! Great, but how does it effect the main story? you still get those 3 options at the end of the game. Also you could just get jesus status again by giving water to a homeless guy who lives next to the boat... which makes you wonder "what the hell is the point in the karma system?!" If i murdered an entire village in real life, and then gave all the posessions to another village, i would still be a murderer and sought after by "any" law enforcers.

i could carry on, but despite all these, i did enjoy Fallout 3, and Oblivion for awhile but they are definately not to be compared to Story-driven RPG's like KoTOR.

I loved Morrowind. Loved crossing past the Gate, visiting Telvari, etc. It felt really epic and the ending movie was one of the greatest gaming experiences I had ever.

Oblivion was crap, pure and simple. Morrowind combat engine + uninteresting story.

Fallout 3 is not a Fallout for me, just re-skinned Oblivion. I have both original Fallout games sitting proudly on my shelf (1st print, not budget price re-releases) and I know they are nothing like Fallout 3. Fallout 3 should be named Fallout PG-13, they took every rough side of things and made it lacking.

DA:O is brutal, gory, and dark. Hell, it's rated 18+ by PEGI. It is similar in this aspect to the Witcher, however the Witcher takes a lot from the folk and tales of Eastern Europe, so I understand some people have trouble getting into it. DA:O looks like more dark LotR, which is perfect for me.
