Oblivion as a game was fun. But the realms of oblivion wasn't. Kinda burns my eyes!!

Pretty repetitive sometimes too. Many NPC characters lack identity (eg. same voices, no expression/emotion/body language.... which was sort of fixed in Fallout 3) while most conversation were one-to-one basis. No team feel. And the NPC faces....... don't look good... But apart from all this, I liked it!!

Dragon Age is more linear and therefore the locations and NPCs are less generic..... I think!! The two games are different like what Cozarkian was pointing out. But from what Ive seen in vids and pics so far, DAO have great potentials to overtake Oblivion's spot in my favourite game standing!!

I thought Oblivion had a great main quest and some interesting side quests. The Shivering Isles was also a great expansion, and I hope the Fade offers the same surrealism. What I hated about the game were the Oblivion gates. The first time you went into Oblivion was awesome, but after that it became a grind.

My other big complaint is except for a few main characters, the NPCs were completely forgettable.

What did you like about the Oblivion main quest?  I found it to be pretty generic, uninspired, and pedantic.  I've read a lot of fanfiction that was better than Oblivion's main quest.  JMO.

I can't believe the love - hate that Oblivion gets. It reminds me a lot of...say...Final Fantasy 8. People loved it, or they hated it.

I quite enjoyed Oblivion..not the best story or best written thing out there but it was enjoyable....still I don't know about RPG of the decade...and also I wouldn't compare DA:O to it at all...I don't even think Oblivion when I think of DA:O..not sure why anyone would.

I second the person who said it's characters were forgettable (Oblivion)...thinking back..and that wasn't that long ago..I can't remember any names of any NPC or character in that game..I don't even remember the main story that much..

But if I think about Baldurs Gate..I can recall Iomen, Boo and Minsc etc etc...  I think memorable characters if a huge must...and I think DA:O will really succeed here.

Agreed.

I've always thought of TES games as more akin to "hiking simulators".  I've enjoyed them for the most part for what they are, particularly Daggerfall and Morrowind.

Bioware's RPGs are vastly different from these types of games.  It's not even worth comparing.  It's like the difference between a Lamborghini Diablo and a Jeep Cherokee.  Both are cool, sexy vehicles, but both are vastly different from one another with minor similiarities.

I loved Oblivion, but only for two reasons really. How modifiable it was, (I don't think anyone will be making any dragon mounts for DA.) and I found it very immersive. I really enjoy a game that gives your character a genuine life. Eating, shopping, sleeping, buying a home, socializing, having a title which civilians recognize you as, etc. And the exploration of a sandbox game certainly didn't hurt it.

But other than that, yeah, it sucked. And so many things could've been done far better. But in my opinion, it's been the best rpg in quite a while. There's plenty of great rpgs out there, but until another one comes along offering that level of immersion and exploration, Oblivion is one of my favs. I know Dragon Age will likely be great, but I just wish it was a sandbox, and had the option of free-roaming and side-quests after finishing the story. I know the reasons they chose against that, and I completely understand them, but that's just my preference.

The great thing about Oblivion was of the mods the community come up with for that game, otherwise i had very quickly lost interest in the game. I think the story and quests will be more interesting in DA:O, but the question is if you will play and keep interest in the game as long as you did with Oblivion. I think it will be difficult to say which game is better then the other one.

Oblivion disappointed a lot of people. Yes some people loved it but a lot of people hated it. I suspect dragon age will appeal to almost everyone who likes fantasy RPG's. The people who didn’t like oblivion will probably like DA:O, so as far as mass appeal it will blow oblivion out of the water. Oblivion had the advantage of having minimal competition for quite a while though, and there will probably be more competitors for DA:O coming out so it might not keep the spotlight as long.

Who wishes Bioware had been the one to make Fallout 3? Not that fallout 3 was terrible or anything but vampires? Really? I felt like I was playing oblivion on crack : )

That will be difficult. Oblivion lasted me about 3 to 4 years. Though Bioware has said they intend to support Dragon Age with new content for about 3 years, so it looks promising. Honestly I think a major part of Oblivion's appeal was how basic it was, allowing for much custom content and imagination. Though the story lines were absolute trash. Not to mention it had just about the worst magic system in any rpg. Oblivion's appeal was its simplicity, whereas Dragon Age's appeal is its complexity. We'll see how that fares with the simple-minded masses of today.

Oblivion was probably a disappointment compared to Morrowind. However it doesn't mean it isn't a decent game by itself.

By the way, those vampires in Fallout 3 are just as real as goths these days who think that they are vampire, and there is actually a disease which involves lack of iron in blood and can be "treated" by drinking human blood.

kotor 2 is way better than kotor storywise, sad that greedy LA push it out months before the scheduled release and ruined the game

fallot 3 imo is better than oblivion, bit short on the main story but the atmosphere is fantastic and some nice morality stuff

so my list is something like...

kotor2 > fallout3 > oblivion

i dont think that dao will have a better story than kotor2 (still open for surprise) but probably it will be overall a better game

You probably can't compare the two back to back, I guess it boils down to your personal preference.

In my opinion you can however still decide which one you think is the best.

I will undoubtedly think DA is the superior game as a whole gaming experience, based on my prefences of RPG's and based on my prior experience with Bioware games (BG, BG2, ME, KOTOR and Jade Empire are all on my list of all time fav RPG's along with Fallout 3, Phantasy Star IV, FFVII, Xenogears, Persona 4 and probably a couple more, I'm done name-droppin).

Oblivion had a lot of potential, i just wish they would've made it more like Morrowind but with improvement (to me Morrowind is the better game except for horses and graphics).

I grew real tired of Obl for several reasons (please note that I didnt try any mods and the 1st problem might have been solved with mods or patches, I dont know):

1. You could explore the world, find a nice cave filled with vampires, slay the whole bunch and loot the place. Later on you could get a sidequest to the same cave. Voila! The place would yet again be home to a new family of vampire, but this time they would have equipment levelled to your PC level. Suddenly every bandit in Cyrodyl had upgraded their equipment, how? Did someone send out a memo?

"Are you a highway bandit or a vampire? It's equipment-upgrade-Day! Come by your closest bad-guy-outfitter and we'll make sure you have the latest in bad guy fashion! What are you waiting ofr? Get your Village Pillage on today!"

2. NPC recycling. After seeing the same face and hearing the same voice for the XXth time it started getting old...

3. Gate-closing. Pause.

4. Main story was a little dull.

5. The FP melee combat was pretty boring to me and archery was almost worse. Seriously, only Chronicles of Riddick has done FP melee and unarmed fun IMO.

However I loved Fallout 3, probably because it didn't have any of those problems. Well the melee in Fallout 3 wasn't very good either, but you didn't need it. It did have levelled baddies, but not as obvious as in oblivion. At level 20 you could still run into some crazy raiders sporting a leather gimp suit and a sawed off shotgun. (If it would've been like Obl every raider would've had Tesla gear and plasma rifles).

My top reasons to play RPG's are:

-Story

-Exploration

-Choices and character customization

-Gameplay

-Immersion

Obl had a lot of that, but to me the 5 things mentioned ruined a lot of it too. I might pick it up again though sometime.

Nuff rambling: By the looks of it DA will have all that in abundance. And then some.

I thoroughly enjoyed Oblivion and Bethesda Nevertheless, I still prefer Bioware games due to:

Party Members

Interpersonal dialogue

Deeper interactions

Deeper stories

Emotionally charged choices

I wanted to like Oblivion. I really did. But I couldn't come up with a char that didn't look ugly. Hated the scaled combat. Thought the animation was criminal. When you look at Mass Effect vs. Oblivion/Fallout 3 it's like watching a great movie vs. going to see great moments with Mister Lincoln at Disneyland. Not even close in terms of realism and immersion. Oblivion is robotic and was rightly dissed. I was sucked into buying Fallout 3 cause of the great reviews, and I thought "oh great they've taken the Oblivion engine and finally done the game they should've done the first time" so I bought it. It was better, but... the people at Bethseda should bag it and go improve Mr Lincoln

Bethesda makes some very fun games, I loved both Oblivion and Fallout 3, but they feel so... cardboard. The worlds are huge and free roaming is always fun but they aren't very alive and the characters are really shallow and just well... kinda standing around. Not that I didn't have a lot of fun  with them, but the characters alone in Mass Effect and Dragon Age are enough to tip the scales for me. They memorable, they have personality, hell Dragon Age isn't even out yet and it's characters stand out to me more than anything in Oblivion or Fallout.

And people called me a troll.

Le sigh.

The Witcher was much better than Oblivion in a couple of ways, but Oblivious was vastly preferable to folks that want control of their character.

Oblivion was a fun game, but I wasn't too impressed with the NPCs at all. Oblivion (and Fallout 3) had horrible ally AI. All they do is rush into combat and whack at things. The only way I found to keep NPCs alive was to try and reach the mob before they did and kill it before they could enter the combat.

In addition, the combat system wasn't all that great either, though I found it to be much better with the VATS system in Fallout 3. As a whole the 1st person melee combat thing works extremely poorly in most games.

Remember when they showed of the " Lady and her Bookstore" before launch at some big game show, probably E3. Where everything was supposedly the work of the npc engine at its finest blah blah blah. Everything later turned out to be staged.

Such a let down.

Oblivion was fun & looked great but little to no story and really bad acting. Just bells & whistles. I would has to disagree with Zilod, I could barely finish KotOR II it was so boring.

Sidequests like the Arena make sense, because you are honing your skills, but I always find it silly when you can spend months/years gametime finding out how somebody sells things so cheaply, or buying a house, helping someone discover their "noble" heritage, or advancing in the assassin's guild when OBLIVION GATES are spawning all over the world.  Seriously, I think an invasion from hell is more important than your pet rats.

I had almost forgotten about that sham of a demo. I do remember feeling vaguely dissapointed when I ran around the Imperial City expecting the NPC's to engage in mildly interesting activities and "real" (which conssisted of randomly walking around and staring at walls until their bed time rolled around) schedules but I was too amazed by the beautiful vistas to think of much else at the time.
