Well, I have to agree that if DA2 started in Lothering, it would be better. (And maybe it was initially supposed to be this way? Varric hinted that when he said to Cassandra "you need to hear the full story" or something like that.)

The possibilities were unlimited. It would be nice to see Leliana again. Or Sten being captured. And of course your Warden, passing through the town with Alistair and Morrigan. Now just imagine that you'd be able to ask the Warden to help you with a quest and he'd respond according to the personality you yourself picked for him in DA:O? For example, if you played a selfless hero type, he'd be eager to help, but if you played a greedy mercenary, he'd ask for reward, etc.
