Hi, I have a problem with trying to start a female character on the pc version of the game. My wife wants to try and play but every time she gets to the character creation screen selects her sex, race, class and rank then clicks next the game crashes to desktop. Wont work on any female characters of any race. Works on all the male characters though. I have been playing for about 3 days now with zero issues until she tried to make her character. I have upgraded the game to patch 1.0.1b Any pointers on how to fix this or what is wrong? Thanks in advance.

This sounds a bit odd. I can say that female characters work as I am playing one (although I did create her using the character creator).

Have you tried a reinstall? The problem could be a missing or corrupted file somewhere. Also is the problem with all female characters or just one of the races?

I'm having the exact same problem.  I've tried every origin combination, but whenever I choose female, the game crashes to the desktop during the transition to the appearance-customization "page".

This is the first that I have seen of this issue.

Just a quick check, I assume you're both on the PC? If so, do you have the Toolset installed? That has been causing some weird issues for a lot of people (see point 4 in the General FAQ at the top of the page for more details).

I'll try to help as best I can, but personally I have never had an issue creating a female character.

I am playing on the PC and do NOT have the Toolset installed (yet).  I'm playing on a fairly low-spec machine, but the game plays fine in every situation EXCEPT creating a female character.

Thanks for the response, and if you have any ideas I'd love to hear them.  I'm wondering if it's having a hard time finding the graphic files for the female portion of the character creator...

Do you get an error message or anything, or does it just boot you back to the desktop?

I do not have tool set either and I do not get any message except one that says Dragon Age : Origins stopped working and when I open the description this is what it gives me.

I will file this and we will start investigating it.

Since it's my first encounter with this bug, it'd be useful to get some information about your respective systems. It doesn't seem like it'd be a system related bug, but with PCs sometimes you just never know.

The only possible workaround I could think of right now is uninstalling the game (and make sure that there is nothing lingering where the game used to be), and reinstalling it, as my best guess is that something got buggered up with picking females during chargen for some unknown reason.

Hopefully with a bit of luck we can try to narrow down what is causing this.

Allan - Won't be able to access my machine until I get home tonight (~7PM EST) but if it'll help I'll post a DXDIAG. After giving you that I'll try reinstalling and see if it helps.

Okay I tried to uninstall the game and reinstalled it, same problem. Here is what im using for pc,

Video Card: nVIDIA 8400 GS , Up to date drivers. Know this is a bad card but was free.

Ram : 2gb.

Processor : 3.33 GHz Intel Celeron

Operating System : Vista 32bit.

I have no sound turned on for the game either, as I donot have a sound card available.

My guess right now would be my video card , but I am not certain. If that's the case could I get a reconmondation of what I should purchase.

Thanks for the feedback.
Unfortunately the issue is more nebulous I had hoped for. If bustedwheel is able to post his specs, we might be able to start finding some connections. Unless nVidia did some funky business with their graphics card numbering, your graphics card does meet the system requirements for the game. If you can get one for free to swap out and test, by all means do so.
I'm continuing to track the bug, but unfortunately at this moment I have nothing to recommend.
I apologize for the inconvenience.

Allan

EDIT:  Some other people have reported issues with character generation.  They haven't been the same, but that person was using an Intel Celeron processor (and a host of other non-supported components too).  It could be that the Celerons have an issue.

Actually, while the video card is quite terrible, the processor is ridiculously bad.  Celerons have almost all of the onboard cache RAM omitted, making them run at anywhere from 40% to 60% poorer than an Intel P4 at the same core speed.  The minimum P4 is a 3.0, and putting the BEST face onto your Celeron, it's in the same class as the 2.0 Ghz P4!

Because the Celerons use a different front side bus, you probably can't even replace that POS with an old P4 that could run the game (I doubt there are any "new" P4s anywhere now)..  If you buy a used P4 that will work in your PC, you want to find a Mainline Gaming card, which will have the "n600" performance code in its name, like this: 8600 GT, 9600 GT, HD 4670, etc.

If you thought to buy the very minimum video card, used, and picked a Geforce 6600 GT (the official requirements name that crappy thing as usable).  I find that possibility to smack of Pie in the Sky fantasy dreaming!   That is so old (and was pretty bad five years ago, when still relatively new) that the 8400, which really is crap, has caught up to it already.

I have the same problem - to get round it, i used the character creation demo from steam and imported the character. This works, but now the game crashes to desktop if I save, or click the character or inventory screen.
My system is a quad core pentium processor at 2.8GHz, 1GB ram, XP SP3 and a Geforce 8800 GTS 320mb

I tried creating a male character, and it is working so far, but for some reason the portrait is completely messed up - the polygons are facing the wrong way and there are obvious texture glitches. Maybe that's part of the problem?

(Edited to suit the word "quad" that has no relationship to any Pentium.)  Had you actually owned a Pentium, the only reason you could have done as much as you reported having managed to do would have been because your video card was four or five times better than anything else in the system.  Your RAM is too small, your CPU would have been too old and too slow, etc. etc.  (At least it's not as horrible as the last messager's nasty Celeron is.)

If it's actually a Quad, it's a Core of some sort.

When did Intel make quad core Pentiums?

I don't know since when, but according to dxdiag, I have the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - this may not actually be pentium; I might have got that muddled up. I am pretty sure that changing the affinity of the process to only 1 processor makes it run slightly better, so I've been doing that. The CPU is pretty fast - I can run most other things without crashing. I realise it needs more RAM, and I've ordered some. However, I'm not sure my hardware is the issue. Character creation with a male works fine, although the game crashes after the first cutscene for dalish elf.

I am about 20 minutes into the human female warrior origins story, and I have a guy in my party, and I can't click his or her inventory or character screen without the game crashing. Saving works, but the game crashes immediately afterwards.

I'm running at 1280*800 resolution windowed, which has a very fast framerate, and the game takes up about 600mb of RAM usually.

Obviously I'd like to be able to play the game without altering my system too much. It is definitely at only specific points that the game crashes.
Thanks for you help

Did you try making one with the "character creator" stand alone program? Then just import it. It's not a solution but it might be a way for your wife to start playing while they figure out what the problem is.

i've had quite a lot of success just lowering the settings to medium/low. Now it's very playable. Thanks very much everyone for your help - I suppose it was the hardware after all.

I have this same issue. What is really strange for me, is that I created a female character before. My first character was a female elf rouge. Now I am going back to make my third character and I CTD whenever I press next after selecting female and anything.

Edit:
My first character was created right after install, this character I tried making with the 1.1 and 1.2 patch.  If I reinstall, will anything bad happen to my other characters?
