I have had the same problem as well. No toolset, multiple reinstalls, both with and without the patches, an AMD Phenom 9650 quad core 2.3 GHz, Vista 64 bit and ATI radeon hd 4350.
Creating a female character works in the stand alone character creator. When I upload and select her, I am asked to again choose her sex, race, occupation, etc and then it crashes. So no point, since it just loops into the same bug. I have had no problems creating a male character with any combination of attributes.

I have the same problem too. Male character works fine and can go through the whole game, it seems to me that when there is a cut scene as a female character, my game crashes

Female characters also crash on my machine, after a full reinstall (painful re-download from steam on my ADSL1 connection). I also blew-away my dragon age folders in my docs, so I'm kinda stuck for ideas at this point.
This doesn't seem to be a hardware or OS issue, male character creation works as planned.

Someone asked the same question (females crashing the game), and I didn't remember that I had never read any of these threads before. This particular one I've quoted from, above, wouldn't qualify for official support because of the puny business-graphics-only video card. I have no idea that the procedures for rendering a female figure are more stressful than for a male figure, but I will be looking at such of these threads as the on-site search found (ten), to see about any similarities.Jadzia81 wrote...

(My allergies are really kicking up from the ragweed, and I'm stuck indoors.)
OK, it's a few minutes later, and of the seven other authors whose complaints made up this thread about this problem, only one had a decent PC to use. The OP who started the thread had junk that was way below the requirements, and I did read his comments, when the thread was new, and did name those components as inadequate. Four of the seven provided zero information about their systems, and one only said "Low Spec" when a Bioware person popped in to find out what was going on in the thread.
(Much later: two factors seemed to emerge, well, three, if you count the tendency of the complaints in this thread to have been made by people who wouldn't report what hardware components were involved, since that continued to be common. First, several people had similarly inadequate video graphics solutions, so rendering females must be more difficult that for males. Second, if sound has been disabled on a weak system to improve performance, that is likely to cause the crashes with female party character creation.)

I am having this issue as well. Just got the game. Updated to 1.04, no help
System:
AMD 9550 quad Core processor
8 gigs ram
Ati 5770 Radeon with 1 gig mem.
windows 7 pro 64bit
you seem to have dismissed this issue as a hardware issue, as in not good enough.
I run Age of Conan in high graphics mode (DX-10) with no problems.
I dont think it is a hardware issue....
