So, there is, like, half a hundred topics about the best DW weapon in DA2. It's official now: the best DW weapon in DA2 is Volcanic Shield.

Video

As you can see, it outperforms the best spirit (!!!) dagger enchanted with Devastation vs a spirit-weak enemy (the damage gap between Volcanic and, say, Low Blade under the same conditions is enormous). I do not have any +X% physical damage gear on. Please note how Volcanic's damage spikes after Mark of Death: it's only logical, since physivcal weapons main weakness in comparison to their elemental counterparts is they are affected by armor (=additional damage resistance). With Volcanic, Blood Feud with its 'target damage resistance temporarily 0%' property will finally get a chance to shine.

Is that legit? Technically, yes, it's perfectly legit. Anyone can equip Defender of the Wall (that appears to be the best Act II DW weapon, hands down) and Volcanic shields, provided they have the required attribute scores. It's just there is no real reason to equip those shields for a mage or an archer, unless they wish to enchant the items in question with RoFs, and then switch to them when opening chests with pre-set substantial gold rewards to maximize the revenue.

In my opinion, it's similar to dual-wielding Celestial Fury/Melf's Minute Meteors in BG2: hardly game-breaking, but somewhat cheesy, no doubt. Decide for yourself. Still, if Bioware leaves such options open (there are 5 cross-class weapons/shields in this game, mind you: Volcanic is not a sole exception), there is no real reason not to give it a try, at least.

Interesting! Did you try using Assassinate? Do you get an Assassinate damage number for the shield as well as the dagger?

Yes, of course. It's a DW weapon for all purposes, DW tree abilities included. You can activate, for instance, Twin Fangs with Defender or Volcanic.

So, it counts the armor value as damage value or what?

Do we know what other weapons are cross-class or class-unlimited?  This is a very interesting find!  I was putting off another DW rogue run.  I am also interested in how damage and armor are applied in this case.  Does the armor rating conrtibue to the rogue's damage, and does it also contribute to the rogues armor rating?

I have considered this possibility, but I don't think this is the case. I don't know how exactly shield damage is calculated, but if armor values were used, the damage output would be astronomical. For example, Volcanic would be 227 base dmg, which is totally insane.

Well, that hugely depends on your defenition of 'we', methinks. I know, yes. I also happen to have a post about this in this sub-forum :) Just don't tell anyone!

The base damage of shields must be rather high because when you check the bonus damage that Elemental Weapons apply, its usually at least 3-4x higher than the 1-hander equivalent.

Then it may be armor value, indeed. It was my first thought, naturally, but 227 base seems a bit too high even for the huge damage numbers I get with Volcanic.

Hey, if it's on the forum, then it is "we" :) Here is the link to IN1's topic in case any others are interested: http://social.biowar...8/index/6912328

I always love these exploits; they are my favorite part of the game, I think.

It may seem large, but then again there's lots of questions how it interacts with various bonuses. Seeing as it doesn't technically increase the damage stat. Perhaps it uses that for calculating critical damage or something. Or might be it's calculating as if you're using the main weapon, but using the element and giving dmg bonus from the shield. Lots of possibilities.

Anyway I'm not much for these kinds of "exploits", though they are funny sometimes. It's amusing to see what you can get away with.

Maybe they'll fix it in the next patch.

My favorite was in BG2 (iirc) pumping my fire resistance up to 130% and nuking myself to heal ...

Elemental Weapons gives exactly +10% of a weapon's base Damage value. In case of Shields, it gives +10% Damage of a Shield's base Armor value. For example, a Cold Elemental Weapon will give +20 Cold Damage to a 200 Armor Shield, and +3.5 Cold Damage to a 35 Damage 1-Hander.

This coupled with using a Shield with the ROF of DW weapons will make the damage output go even more insane. So yeah, perhaps we should try this again with Elemental Weapons. :-)

And there I was, running around with Champion's Armor and dual daggers like a chump...

Nice find, for sure. I've noticed the Elemental Weapons bonus on shields before, but never thought to try actually using them as weapons. For non-rogue players, this looks like the best setup for a certain skanky pirate wench.

Wow.
Maybe they should send you a press/review copy of future Bioware games, IN1. You know, with an NDA and the requirement that you give them a heads up on things like this, so they can get them into the patch pipeline if needed. It is interesting to know.

Does the twin fangs animation look really silly?

PS: Can you DW two shields at the same time? Looking for that list of Cross-class weapons now...

Hmmm... not much different from the regular one, if you ask me.

Nah, shield is restricted to a right, from player's POV, weapon slot (off-hand).

It would, but no sillier than Captain America's Shield acrobatics.

Now THAT would look sillier than Captain America's Shield acrobatics. They would look like two fat wings you attempt to fly with.

For auto-attacks in general and vs spirit-weak creatures (Meredith and Orsino included) -- most definitely yes. For nuking after Mark of Death, Hex of Torment, Wounding Arrow -- not so much.

Can you wield two shields with S&S warrior? Of course not, you cannot overcome basic engine limitations. Shield is limited to the right slot (off-hand).

so best DW setup is volcanic shield + which dagger? Elemental still or is it better to go w/ physical? In my case, since I solo at level 50 nightmare for a challenge, would elemental dagger beat out a random dagger that gives 47 base dmg along w/ +10% crit dmg and +3% attack speed?

If it's possible could you list all the gear, talents and stats you had by the time you fought Orsino there? I'm trying to build my rogue around yours in act 3 for future builds but i don't know anything about your build other than Volcanic shield or defender of the wall and Shadow's claw:pinched:

Honestly, I haven't done any serious experiments with this build due to its being so blatantly cheesy :) However, you may take my Arishok video as an example of starting Act III gear and find suitable alternatives for obsolete gear/weapons as you progress through the Act.
