I am on the Anders companion quest, fighting Ser Aldric but as the battle goes on I keep on getting overwhelmed by templars. Frustratingly my party dies very quickly. I don't stand a chance. I am only playing on normal..
My hawke is a 2h warrior. I have varric, Merrill and ofc Anders.

Well... what skills do you have?

The basic idea is to open the action wheel immediately to pause the game and get a sense of enemy placement. Tell everyone to use an AoE attack on Aulric and his goons... the stronger the better. The second round of attacks (or the first, if you have no AoE's) should be things like Horror, Petrify, Hex of Torment... all on Aulric himself. Try to silence or stun him as much as possible so he can't use any special abilities or potions. If your warrior has Cleave, use it and go to town on him.

Try to kill the Aulric first, then the rest of the Templars... more will spawn even after he's dead, but if you use AoE's, you should be able to focus at least one person on Aulric himself while catching random people in AoE blasts... also, when henchmen are low on health (like 25%), kill them with one of your party members... having somebody's tactics set to do that will save you the trouble of telling them to...

Hope that helps...

Also... archers can be a huge pain.  Try to kill them first if possible... I like to use a 2 Hand Warrior with Massacre to clear out any trash while the rest of the team fights the boss... when I'm done with that, I go back to fighting the boss... etc... but yeah, Archers can be a problem if you don't eliminate them early.

ah okay well I haven't bothered with setting tactics yet, as I'm only on normal. I shall start now but my my main issue seems to be running out of stamina/mana. I do have plenty of pots though.
I have tried aoe but getting agro from the mage can be a pain.
Thanks for the advice.

Do you have a warrior with Rally? That's awesome for increasing stamina... especially with mana, since mages regain it from just standing around. Also, if you have Mind Blast, that will take care of any aggro that mages pick up... just use it wisely because of the cooldown... or maybe you can use Cone of Cold to freeze people who get too close?

Play around with the tactics a little too... those can be very useful.

hmm Yes Aveline has Rally but unfortunately I didn't bring her. I do have cone of cold, which is great when combined with scythe.
If all else fails, then I might have to drop the difficulty to casual. I am used to more action orientated rpg's so it takes some getting used to.

Let your hawke to do some tanking. Set tactics to let companions to drink pots whenevet necessory and to attack enemy which is the target of hawke. Kill the templar hunters first as they are most deadly in this fight and kill archers after hunters if they are attacking companions. Since you have low health party members it is necessary that you position them near the door so enemies will see you first instead of other upon spawning. Anders's regroup spell is very useful as well.

Cold damage will be your friend seeing as templars are weak against it. Cone of Cold would work well. I would recommend that you pull your party back through the door you came through. While the templars bunch up in the "choke point" hit them with cone of cold. Have one of your mages have elemental weapons active, and make sure their staff is cold damage. The hardest part about this fight is definitely the assassins. Try to use aoe spells when they disappear because I'm pretty sure it breaks stealth, but if not you can use paralysis glyph around the party member you think is going to get back stabbed. Don't feel bad though, I think this is one of the more harder fights in this game. Not even the high dragon or Hybris was as hard as this one.

Easiest way. When the fight starts, grab your entire party, set them on hold, then run back the way you came. If you keep running, only Aldric and 2 temps will be fast enough to keep up with you. Kill them then work your way back to the entrance. The second wave of temps will be waiting for you but they will be a whole lot easier to handle without Aldric and the hunter.

How do I set them on hold or get them to follow me. They just run for the target automatically.

What platform are you playing on? If you're on PC just toggle hold position/move freely by pressing "H."

Now why didn't I think of that before. Yes it it way easy doing it this way.
Thanks for the tip.

Done it with ease. Yes it was much easier just moving my party back the way I came, then waiting, whilst spamming aoe skills.
I managed to get a group of templars stunned at a doorway. I think they might of got stuck, as they were trying to get through the door at the same time lol.

On PC
Ctrl + A - Selects Party
H - Hold position
Right Click - moves them all together

On console
Do the equivalent ;)

That's a cheat similar to what I used in my first playthrough with mage Hawke LOL
Humm I replayed Dissent and it took me about 2 minutes to finish with DW rogue Hawke, Anders, Aveline and Merrill.

Glad to hear that strategy worked for you. Given that the scene was giving so much trouble, though, if you have the Black Emporium DLC, it may be worth buying a Maker's Sigh to reallocate points so the next time you hit a scene like that it's more doable.

Case in point: I just replayed this scene last night with a 2H Warrior Hawke (because after playing the other classes I realized I played warrior completely wrong, including not realizing until level 20 that I had 2 specialization points to spend, as I thought plot points actually unlocked specializations like in DA:O). My first time at this scene, I got my butt handed to me. Last night, with the exact same party (Anders, Merrill, Varric), again on Normal, I finished in about a minute flat. The main differences:

1. Using tactics telling all companions to use potions
2. Focusing Anders and Merrill on abilities that leave targets Brittle
3. Focusing Hawke's abilities on things that ruin Brittle targets, and just general high damage. (Hawke abilities used in this fight included everything from the Two-Handed tree, Aura of Pain, Devour, Cleave, and a Stamina potion)
