The Tevinters are likely going to be supporting the mages as they start revolting, and Varric's ending narration implies the Orlesian Chantry has lost control of the Templars as well. Having lost most of their martial forces, that would leave them extremely vulnerable to the Imperial Chantry, who might try and take advantage of that weakness to remove one of Tevinter's two main enemies (and since the Black Divine is a magister and comes from the Tevinter Circle of Magi, it stands to reason that the Imperial Chantry is heavily tied up with the Imperium's political leadership).
That's probably the main reason Cassandra and Leliana are searching for the Warden and Hawke - to try and get their help and avoid such an outcome. Of course, in the background you've got rumblings from the Qunari about another invasion and Flemeth shenanigans (I subscribe to the theory of her being Fen'Harel), so that may prove problematic.

but only if it gave you the option to help either side, regardless of your race.
niothing makes a game quite like a human with an elf fetish

Storywise I like the tevinter v. thedas line, it seems like it'll turn one way or another soon especially with the mage uprising.

There are a number of conflicts in Thedas. There's the mage vs templar issue that DA II focused on, but there's also:
Qunari vs Tevinter (and everyone else)
White Chantry vs Black Chantry
Dalish vs Human
Dwarven traditionalists vs Dwarven progressives
If you could pick a conflict you'd love to be the focus of another Dragon Age game, which would it be? You don't need to be realistic. If you'd love a game centered around dwarven politics and the lost city of Kal-Shorak, it doesn't matter if you don't think BioWare would base a game around them.
I'd love to see a game centered in the jungle cities of Saheron with the Qunari on one side, the Teventer on the other, and the natives struggling to free themselves from both.
I would love to see a bit of Tevinter and Qunari culture first hand so I would have to say my favorite conflict would be Qunari Vs Tevinter.
