I'm sure this has been beaten to death several times, but i'm going through another Origins playthrough and I've heard that there is a way to exile loghain without Alistair leaving. How does this happen?
How do you "Harden" Alistair?

It doesn't. Loghain either lives and joins the party or dies. You cannot exile Loghain.
Edit: You can spare Loghain and not have Alistair die/be exiled if you have Alistair marry Anora (and he has to be hardened and he can't kill Loghain himself for this to happen). However, Alistair leaves the party for good.

His personal quest, when he goes to see Goldana. At the end, after he has met her, choose the option that says"everyone is out for themselves, you should know this". later, he will talk to you about it, and say he's decided to look out for himself more. Choosing any option other than "No, don't do that" or something like it, will complete his hardening, and he will be fully and irreversably hardened. Though it really only effects the Landsmeet, his personality does not seem to change much.

And I must add, I too was rather annoyed that you only have two options to deal with loghain: kill or put him through the joining. In some playthroughs, I'd rather not kill him, and instead, have him imprisoned or exiled. I don't really dig the idea of splattering a man's innards all over his daughter. At the very least, if I'm forced to execute him, I'd rather Anora be removed from the chamber until the deed is done and the body removed for burial/cremation.

Well first you light some candles and put on some music to set the mood and then you strut into his tent wearing griffon emblazoned lingerie that leaves little to the imaginatio..... oh. Nvm >.> <.<
I noticed that after I hardened him, he responded with more gusto to the things he disagrees with - killing Connor for example.

Yep. And stays pissy until the end of the game. Though he seems more forgiving in the coronation if Loghain made the kill on the AD and died, saying that it was justice. He's still a little bitter, though not as much if Loghain survives the archdemon. And in his cameo in Awakening, he seems more neutral than anything.

I'm not sure that forgiving is the right word--more like resigned, and glad that he's dead, at least. And it's not like he wanted the warden to die, so...yeah.Skadi_the_Evil_Elf wrote...
