DAO by far, Xbox 360
Hate the new darkspawn, hate the elves, etc etc
Miss what they used to be.

honestly i think a conglomerate of the two game styles would be pretty awesome.
if you took the visceral feel of DA2 combat and put it in DAO world...
..then removed waves of spawning enemies everywhere...
then took DAO and removed all the DLC and awakenings, like they never happened...
and youd have a pretty awesome game.

DAO's visual style was perfect. The look, layout, and atmosphere of the locations, of the enemies, all looked mythological, archetypal. Perfect for the DA universe.
DA2's style largely felt cartoonish.

Overall I prefere the visual style of Origins, although the body proportions in DA2 are a huge improvement. Both games sport fugly weaponry that only modding can solve.

Without doubt: DAO's art style was better (except for the qunari retcon which works well IMO)
In particular the hurlock and elven retcons were terrible IMO.

If they do make a DA3, which is doubtful, I would like to see a more refined version of DA:O, un-do the horrible elves, but leave the quinari.

DA:O - PC.
DA 2 looks too cartoony in design and combat animation for me to care about. Fantasy arms and armor can look "fantasy" without looking like crude, ineffective toys. DA 2 went too far in the aesthetics region for me.

DAO Redesigned by Dracomies (PC)
^^This a million times over.
Seriously Bioware... that mod made DA:O look from bad to pretty damn good.

Frankly, the fact that this thread can exist means much about what's wrong with DA2. Forget all the technical/storyline/whatever gripes, to me DA2 is first and foremost a heart-wrenching artistic failure (just my sensibilites, disagreeing with me is possible, if not encouraged).
I don't care if Elves are ugly or if Qunari have horns, or if talents are all combat-related. Just make the visuals, along with the aesthetics of the game (including the HUD and general UI), coherent with the previous title. That is all I ask as a fan.
This is where Mass Effect 2 delivered very, very well. I didn't care much about the streamlined stuff. It still felt the exact same world because krogans and other aliens stayed the same. The HUD had a color change, which I found clever (I think the red-dominated graphical interface went very well with the fact that you were now working for the not exactly angelic Cereberus... maybe that's too much symbolism, but anyway). Yet there was an overall level of familiary that was absent from DA2.
It's all I wished for.

I will agree with Bioware that Dragon Age Origins art style was pretty generic RPG and it needed a tweak. Dragon Age 2 however reminds me of Guild Wars -- which isn't necessarily a bad thing -- without the extra layers of bloom. I know they were going for a striped down art style with the characters being the focus rather then the background and in some situations it worked. I like the stark scenery of Kirkwall but I also feel that a lot was missing.
As for the Darkspawn, Elves and Qunari. The Darkspawn looked more twisted in Dragon Age Origin and I personally like that quality. The Elves i think looks better in Dragon Age 2, simply because they don't look like humans with pointy ears -- I seriously had a hard time telling some of the elven models from Dragon Age Origins apart from Humans. I also like the Qunari, while I was a bit skeptical when I first watched the destiny trailer I now know more and I also like their new facial strucutre.
Over all I would say they took a step in the right direction, but came up short in a number of areas -- the real question is, how much of those short comings can be attributed to the short dev time?
Edit: Played both on PC

DA 2 for PC.
- Elves are fine not being "humans with pointy ears" but I would have made the remake somehow in a different way (NwN 2 elves matching the tabletop D&D was a nice move even if that meant "alien" elves).
- Darkspawn were... er... Although I'm fine with the elven remake, the darkspawn certainly were too cartoonized. The ogre certainly looked way better in DAO.

I like the DA2 visuals. They feel more connected to fantasy than DA:O visuals. Although the Darkspawn in DA:O were more intimidating (except for the Ogre... DA2 Ogre wins).

Realistic. I don't mean ultra photo-realistic but something that looks and feels believable. Call it enhanced realism. DA2 can be pretty silly and cartoonish while other RPG's manage to look real, believable and awesome at the same time.
This is very important for RPG's because the visual style can make or break a believable setting. If you tell a story that is dramatic and dark you must have visuals that support it. DA2 is full of dark stuff like demonic possession and murder and it all becomes so meaningless with how the game is presented to the player. The story becomes an excuse for the next scene with waves of exploding corpses which is the answer to everything.
All the cartoon awesome ninja spin kicked flasks, oversized weapons, silly amounts of gore, exploding corpses etc. undermine a mature story. The style used in DA2 is more suited for a repetitive MMO or an arcade / platform game than a mature single player RPG.
I do feel the awesome writing of Dave Gaider & co is wasted on the silly gameplay because you can't really emotionally connect with cartoon characters. I really hope the DA team will take their next RPG seriously instead of adding more ha ha awesome.
If it was a choice between Origins and DA2 I'd definitely say Origins. Origins injected with some Hyboria would be perfect. PC.
