*starts thinking*

So the majority of income comes from the Tranquil...

Kirkwall Circle had mages being made Tranquil for any small offence...

Meredith suddenly owns a big ass expensive lyrium sword...

Sure, Cullen, she said the extra funds would go towards repairs to the Gallows railings and tiles, but they still look pretty broken to me, that's all I'm saying.

Don't they run a whole lot of tranquil-managed stores?

Yes they do. The Wonders of Thedas was one of them. There are those 2 vendors next to the Tower's Gate if you can call it a gate. One is the Tranquil who has a shop of Enchanted Goods and next to her is the Potion Vendor who looks a bit like a mage to me. Mages can't do Enchanting supposedly but maybe one is allowed to make Potions for income that the Circle requires?

The mage circles even have pre order bonuses. If you order some tranquil made items by a certain date they give you free codes for additional items.

knight commander nuggets. Templar twizzlers. Chantry chocolate. Enchanting eggs benedict. Shade shakes. Pride pie. Magic macaroni. The list goes on and on.

Their Cookie selling fundraisers are quite popular across Thedas. No one can resist buying when those lovable little scamps show up at their doorstep in their cute little green mini-robes.

Except for the little trainquil ones. They just creep everyone out.

I could imagine that enchanting, brewing potions and healing would fund most of the circle.

As the Chantry demands a tithe from the government, it's quite possible that a chunk of that goes to the circle. Judging by all the giant gold statues, regular army and secret army the Chantry must be rolling in it.

For some reason this post made me think about the lyrium trade.

If the Chantry controls lyrium trade, and lyrium is used by templars and mages, then why are lyrium potions found outside of the Circle?

Shouldn't that be like an illegal drug since only apostate mages and addicts need lyrium potions?

Yep. All mages and Templars are lyrium junkies. True statement.

I'll tell you how they are funded. You see many overweight or small breasted people in these games? Mages make big coin by augmenting people's bodies to the PERFECTION! I tell you, this is the ONLY reason why the mages aren't pushed to extinction yet.

Wow, so many people!

Firstly, as for the buildings, yes, I am aware that they're old Tevinter ruins and stuff. My point about building repairs is because they're old, naturally they're going to need repairs of =something= every year or so, just like a house (in fact, probably more than a house because these buildings are a gazillion times bigger than a house, made with ye olde materials, and Fereldan at least seemed very damp). Furthermore, that's not including the stuff that gets destroyed when one intrepid apprentice attempts to try out that "sweet looking" fireball spell s/he saw one of the enchanters using. How many rooms/walls get accidentally blown up per year and need to be replaced? Especially if the Circles are taking really young kids who don't know what they're doing. Furthermore, I would imagine that due to prejudice and stuff, the construction workers' union of Thedas would probably charge double what they usually charge because of the "danger" of being around mages.

Next, I =suppose= that I can believe that they get a bulk of their food from gardens within a circle, but they still have to supplement it with food from the outside--like meat for instance, and milk, cheese, bread etc. Unless they also happen to have cows, animals for slaughter and a place to refine grain into flour? But that's getting into a ridiculous amount of work, and I find it unlikely that mages would abandon their studies to milk cows at the crack of dawn. Or tranquil for that matter.

And I have to admit, I did not think about the lamps. The lamps were also mentioned in The Calling, I believe too, so good catch!

And yes, the lyrium! Dwarves have to mine the lyrium, so how much do they pay dwarves to go hunt around and mine it? Especially when the deep roads are full of dangers? And do mages/templars exchange lyrium pro bono or do the templars charge the mages per ounce of lyrium dust in order to help control how much they have access to? As to why you can find lyrium potions outside of the Circles, my guess would be escapees from the circle who stole supplies and smugglers who hijack shipments (like those bros that attack you in the undercity of DA 2).

Speculation is fun!
