Anyone know why the Arishok has such elaborate horns?

1. He's much older than the other Qunari, and their horns keep growing throughout their lives.
1a. Most Qunari keep their horns filed down (their version of shaving) but the Arishok is entitled to let his grow.
2. He's a genetic freak, kind of like Sten but in the opposite direction.
3. Those aren't *his* horns, it's an elaborate headdress. One horn is full of gunpowder. The other is full of M&M's.
4. He's actually an Ogre.

But I'd prefer if they were full of M&M's.

Horns seem to be somewhat of a status symbol among Qunari, the Saarebas' horns are cut off for example.

My second (and more serious theory) is maybe it's like the Doth'raki in A Song of Ice and Fire series. The Doth'raki men are allowed to have their hair grow for as long as they have never been defeated in battle. The Khal (their leader)'s hair ends up being the longest because if he's been defeated more times than the other warriors, he wouldn't be the Khal.

Also they wanted to make him at least a little like his Cinematic version that fought mage Hawke way back when.

Lacking horns is supposed to be a sign of danger. Which is why they do it on Saarebas.
Normal horned Qunari get fidgety around those without horns, which might be why the hornless ones are used in the Ben Hassrath.

Supposedly it's not a status symbol per se--having no horns means you're *dangerous*, which given Qunari culture may imply *extra* status, granted, extra NASTY status.

Well, yes. So the inverse is probably also true. The larger the horns, the better.

In other news: The Qunari often get poached for their horns. Donate to the World Wildlife Fund!!!

1a, I think. Being the most badass qunari around means he's entitled to have larger, more elaborate horns than the other qunari.
I think I like 1a the best personally. Not only is it the easiest from a "making sense" standpoint, it also means that like 90% of the Qunari spend endless time fiddling with their horns to get them "just so". I mean, they already paint all that red stuff all over themselves. Can you imagine how long they must spend primping in front of the mirror in the morning?
