It's probably to show his leadership. The viscount has a crown, the Arishok has really big and elaborate horns. Seeing as he is a warrior leader, it's probably also to give him a more intimidating feel. You don't want your leader looking less fearsome than you after all. Also, note how his horns seem to be banded. I think this adds more so to the whole crown thing.

I'm going with 1a, the normal people have to cut it down and only persons like the Arishok are allowed to let it grow, as a status-symbol.

It's called "who gets the promotion" under the Qun.

1a, I think. Being the most badass qunari around means he's entitled to have larger, more elaborate horns than the other qunari.

But... Sten is the most badass Qunari around...

That was kinda my thought, it's like an 'alpha male' thing - qunari with larger horns are felt to be more impressive and therefore more likely to be made a leader.  Or depending how they choose the Arishok (I'm not so well-versed in the Qun), it could be party genetic, so the ruling families pass on specific traits (like extra-large horns) to their offspring.

"Karashok, why is one of your horns shorter than the other?"
"Oooh, it is not."
"Yes, yes it is. Have a little accident with the file this morning?"
"Shut up."
"Honestly, you're lopsided.  How can you not feel that?"
"SHUT. UP."

How about we just let the Art Department to go ahead and make one character looks more epic than his counter parts. Then we can just call it a day. After all he is basically the coolest looking npc in DA2. Varric a close 2nd.

I really like Sten, but compared with his his horny brothers (:D) he really is a tame one.

M&M horns? All the more reason to...

I won't finish that, never mind.

It's also possible that he was chosen to be Arishok because his horns are so damn huge. They assign your task at a young age in qunari lands, right? So if his horns were always larger than everyone else's (I wanna see a qunrai kid now), then they might've thought it was a sign or something. Sort of like being born without horns is also a sign (Sten).

And why do they seem to be a homage to flemmeth's hairstyle?

Actually, Flemeth is just a walking, talking, shapeshifting ball of foreshadowing. I was very pleased with that echoing of imagery, especially since her headpiece is Meredith's, too.

There is truth in this, I really came to respect just how reasonable a guy Sten was for a Qunari after meeting allot more of his people in DA2 :D

The Qun says Qunari without horns are even better than Qunari with big horns. That's their way to avoid Freud Image IPB

He wasn't all that more reasonable, but he was certainly much more good-natured and even had a sense of humor (and not the nasty kind, either--he was even willing to put up with a certain amount of joking from the Warden).  I got the feeling Leliana wasn't the first person to tease him for being a softie.

I think it has been said that the naturally horn-less Qunari are often used as ambassadors to foreign nations because they look closer to humans. Sten apparently is one of these "ambassador" types. So hornless is not necessarily inferior.

From the concept art, the Qunari females at least remind me of the Draenei in World of Warcraft.

Maybe the Arishok was the testiest Qunari from all the neck aches? I'd suggest he lie down and take a load off...but cannot really picture a pillow that would work. Poor thing.

I hope they make Sten the new Arishok. It would be interesting and nicely symmetrical.

This reminds me of Merrill asking Isabella a similar question, whether the Qunari rub their heads against trees or something when they have an itch on the head :D

I'm betting they will.
Like I said in another topic, no matter what happens there's no outcome where this Arishok gets to return so a replacement is needed.

Sooo . . . you're assuming Izzy knifes him and escapes mid-transit?  Because the Arishok can leave without being killed.

Yay, pudgy Qunari.  Thedas is saved.

That'd totally be a War of the Worlds outcome.  The invaders defeated by . . . baked goods.
