Nearly every character is manipulative or a flat out jerk towards Hawke in some manor, this can even be said for some of your companions aswell. Before I get to listing examples, I would like to point out that at least for me the few characters that were not such came across a much more likable contrasted to everyone else.

Examples:

Flemeth: Though she did save your life, she was very manipulative and kept you in the dark as much as possible while she had you running around.

Carver: First off what a little dick, the guy always tries to undermine Hawke while looking out for his own selfish motives.

Aveline: She is a lazy arse. First she uses Hawke to get a possition of power in The Gaurd, and then once that settles down she constantly pesters you to do her job for her. For 4 years she did nothing as Quentin murdered prostitutes.

Isabela: Though I like her alot, she is a selfish ***** that is more concerned with her own life then all those lost when the Qunari went wacko. Though admirable it may be if she returned the relic that dosn't excuse her for all the bloodshed.

Fenris: Not a bad guy, what bothered me was his constant use of Hawke to get revenge.

Marethari: This nutjob sends you into danger everytime you meat her. The most rediculous thing is she is a racist! She sacrificed herself to the demon on the mountain because she couldn't trust that Hawke would look after Merril simple because of the fact Hawke is not an elf.

Viscount Dumar: The man is a spineless coward. Again Hawke is tasked with dealing with The Arishok, which should be the Viscount's job in the first place.

Anders: Although I wasn't a fan of the guy originally I warmed up to him, warmed up to him that is until he decided to commit an act of terrorism. The blood of thousands is on his hands, even though he might have ment well there is no excuse for what he did.

Orsino: This slippery snake appeares decent at first, but later on you realize he is a bloodmage and is partly responsible Leandra's demise. Like Meredith, he fails to see the faults of his own faction. He turns a blind eye to the zelots and demons that come along with magic.

Meredith: Though Bartrand's relic made her go phycho, she was a zelot before that. Her treatment of mages in the circle is wrong and like Orisino she turns a blind eye to those Templars who mistreat mages.

Grand Cleric Elthina: To me she was the middle ground between the mages and Templars, though her failure to act on the issue and send Hawke on pointless arrands is outrages and for that she deserved to die.

The Arishok: Like Isabella he is at falt for not being honest with Hawke about the truth of the relic. Futhermore his zelot-y-ness destroyed a town. Also like everyone else he used Hawke to further his own goals. Err, excuse me, make that The Qun's goals.

Leandra: Sure she can be a kind and careing mother. But her doublesidedness made me  >:( First she runs away to Ferelden, because of love and abandons wealth, then when she relizes the estate was sold she throws a hissy fit at everyone for the very thing she abandonded in the first place.

Gamlen: What can I say, he does have points of reason. But he stands aside and is not useful at all. He sell Hawke into servitude for a year to pay off some debt and then dosn't do much to find his daughter or Leandra.

Bartrand: What can I say, he sells you out to the darkspawn for a idol that makes him and the Knight Commander Crazy.

Random Qunari: He want's me to murder his clan cause he is to damn lazy.

Gascard DuPuis: Blood mage rapeist!

Demons: The demon in the Fade lied to me about infinite power!

I can go on and on about all the manipulative jerks in each and every sidequest but that would take too much time. But I think I made my point. Discuss!

Half the population of the planet think the other half are manipulative jerks...what's your point?

You got to have drama in a story. That's the point of the story. You do that by creating characters who have their own agendas.

You forgot Hawke. "I'm going to murder like 9/10ths of the population by the end of this game!"

It evens out; Hawke can be just as manipulative as the other characters. Hawke might not like Anders for example, but keeps him around because he's useful in battle.

Would that really make him worse than he already is?

Well it wouldn't make him GOOD but yeah it would make him worse.  Anyway I was just wondering where that came from.

Later on in the game it is revealed that Gascard was that one guy's ex-apprentice and he wants to learn the secrets of blood magic and what was done to Leandra. So playing through the game again I was under the impression he was going to rape the girl. And once a rapist always a rapist so he probably has raped people before when he met Hawke.

Heh, just because it may belongs in this thread.

David G. If you are reading this. To a point one could compare Dragon Age 2 to Ralph Waldo Ellison's Invisible Man. A really good book if you've ever read it.

All my companions are jerks.
They all come to visit the damn dog, never me unless they want something.

They're all going on my revenge list.

Lol.  I didn't think about it like that, but it's true!!!  And Bodahn's worthless as a manservant.  People just walk in and out of my house and read my diary all hours of the day and night, no problem!

No, he was honest about what he had her for.  He didn't know where Quinten was and he knew that girl was going to be his next victim, so he wanted to be able to track her.  He was only lying about wanting to find him for his sister.  I hear if you spare him you can convince him to reform.  Wouldn't know, I always make a mess of him first chance I get.

Not too much worse.  I mean I'm not underscoring how horrible rape is, but that sicko was already doing crimes so horrible we should just be thankful they can't be committed in the real world.

You forgot Merill. Sure, she's cute and adorable, but refuse to help her, even if it's for her own good, and she'll call you a racial slur in a second.

Does Isabela visit dog?  Because that'd be... worrying.

<Mordin>  Implications unpleasant.  </Mordin>

Flemeth: Saved your life. You should be grateful. And she didn't cause you too much trouble at all - I'd have hiked up Sundermount for relaxation on a nice Sunday afternoon. She also allowed you to know Merrill (bless them both).

Carver: Never tried to undermine Hawke. Stood firmly by Hawke's side whenever crisis comes. He's a jerk for sure, but not manipulative in the tiniest sense. A good brother overall.

Aveline: Never required you to do her job for her. You can skip all her quests if you want.

Isabela: Is a pirate and therefore selfish, but she sure cannot 'manipulate' Hawke to do anything (you can give her to the Arishok, and I call that being manipulated instead being manipulative). You can deny all her quests if you like. And she's really nice and easy-going, the oppoiste of 'jerk'.

Fenris: Again, he's not using you. He's asking for your help. You are free to refuse to help him. He's an unreasonable jerk to Mages, but it's quite understandable given his experiences.

Marethari: "The most rediculous thing is she is a racist! She sacrificed herself to the demon on the mountain because she couldn't trust that Hawke would look after Merril simple because of the fact Hawke is not an elf." - No base in facts at all. She does not even trust herself to be able to look after Merrill, and she is one of the few non-racist Elves. She greets you with andaran atish'an instead of "Hold, Shemlen!"

Viscount Dumar: Hawke is tasked with dealing with The Arishok because the Arishok requested it and refused to speak more than 2 words to the Viscount.

Anders: I agree with you on this one. He is manipulative. But not a jerk most of the time.

Orsino: Bad plot design. Unreasonably stupid actions.

Meredith: Same as Orsino, but a decent, respectable person true in her convictions. Not a jerk or manipulative (her own Knight Captain refused to obey orders - how manipulative is that) in any sense of the word.

Grand Cleric Elthina: Nice granny (not a jerk) who does nothing (not manipulative).

The Arishok: Will only be judged by the Qun and not by you.

Leandra: Is shallow and weak, but cannot manipulate a door knob. Not a jerk in any sense of the word.

Gamlen: Idiot. Jerk, sure. Manipulative? He can't manipulate the rats in his cupboard.

Bartrand: Idiot and jerk like Gamlen. Zero charisma, zero manipulation.

Random Qunari: Again, the Qun is weird.

Gascard DuPuis: Didn't rape anyone and had good intentions. Get to know the story better please.

Demons: What do you expect from them? Tea and cakes?

I think everyone, fictional or real, is selfish to a degree. We all care about ourselves, our families, our interests than anyone else. There's evidence we're wired to think that way. Seriously. There's a tendency to ascribe any successes of your own to your inherent awesomeness while successes from somebody else are a result of environmental factors (like luck). Of course, when you fail it's because your circumstances were bad, while when someone else fails it's because they're just not as smart/talented/amazing as you are.

So really, the manipulations (and I agree with you, just about everybody has their own agenda in the game) make the companions more realistic. You just have to decide whose agenda (if any) you agree with more. They're your friends. Those you disagree with become rivals.
