I am doing my first Marian Hawke character. She is going to fall for Anders. I planned on Mage at first but RP wise, she shouldn't be a Blood Mage due to Anders, which means she would be a Spirit Healer / Force Mage. That makes me think she will overlap with Anders's support job. Then I though of Rogue as an alternative, as Warrior doesn't fit her Default Femme Fatale look.

What do you recommend?

I would go with a mage, myself. I've never tried it but you could build Anders as more of a dps mage through his Vengeance tree. I don't know how effective it is though.

Could just not 'pick' a second specialization. Grab SH or BM for the +50 health/mana and keep in the default trees open to mages.

You don't have to overlap at all. Anders is very passive-bonus focused. He's not an overly "Offensive" or "Controller" type Mage. That's Merrill's job, and you can fill her shoes very easily.

I haven't played a Rogue, but I just finished my Warrior - and my first was a Mage.

I found the most fun parts of the Mage were the Primal and Arcane trees. Primal has not only the best Mage AoE, but it has Petrify. If you never brought Merrill through your game so she could Petrify the ever-loving-shiznite out of big boss-monsters, you're missing out. Petrify works on everything except the biggest of baddies - and allowed me to take down the Arishok single-handedly as a Mage.

Arcane was the next best tree. A fully-upgraded Arcane Shield helps survival so much it's ridiculous. Not to mention you can bubble Avaline or Fenris, and Crushing Prison is some additional control.

I wouldn't recommend the Elemental tree much beyond Cone of Cold. The tree is OK, but it's AoE overkill.

Entropy is decent if you can fit it into your play-style. It's similar to Arcane in that you're turning into more of a Controller focused on taking enemies out of the fight temporarily than directly helping companions or dealing damage. It does a decent job.

I didn't like the Force Mage. It was a bit awkward for me.

Never tried the Blood Mage.

The Spirit Healer is great if you can't stand Anders.

A few more tips:
1) The best staff in the game is bought, not found - though there are a few close seconds.
2) If you're the controller/damager of the group, have a backup damager. Isabela, with good knives, is a great Mage companion when specced well.
3) Don't be afraid to run away if you ****** off too many enemies. Your companions will deal with whoever they're focusing on. Sometimes, this is desirable.
4) As a Mage, you can single-handedly defeat the Bone Pit's dragon. This is probably true of a Bow-focused Rogue, but I know from experience it can be done as a Mage - it will just take you a really long time.
5) The same applies for the Arishok. You can take him 1v1 as long as you have Petrify.

You don't need a whole lot of Willpower unless you have a lot of abilities that have complementary cooldowns. I can't remember exactly what I had, but I'd assume ~30 is perfectly fine for 90% of the game.

The robes look much better than DAO's, however, some of the hats still need work.

I've been running nothing but mages, most of whom romance Anders. Even un-romanced he's in my party all the time as a dedicated healer. My PC concentrates on DPS. I take Force Mage and SH as specs, but only invest in FM skills (the bonus to fortitude and Pull of the Void are absolute musts). I also max out Primal and take Chain Lightning and Tempest, Heal (can't hurt to have an extra while Anders' is on cooldown), Mind Blast, and Crushing Prison. PotV + Firestorm + Tempest kills most mobs dead. Anders, on the other hand, is great for passive buffs, healing, paralysis, etc. No overlap, and steamy mage-on-mage love. Good times.

You can, in fact, spec Anders for DPS. You have to be really careful because Anders is ultra-squishy, but if done right can even out-DPS Merrill. Just fill out the bottom half of his companion tree:

Vengeance + Wrath
Martyr
Swift Justice
Blood of My Enemy

then Heal, and then take one offensive tree (Elemental or Primal, depends on A. what CCCs you want and B. if you want him to cover what you can't cover or provide additional support in your tree). I think there's actually enough points to give him both Elemental and Primal trees as thus: here.

I am doing my FM/SH run and it is boss. I don't use Anders (I use Merrill) but I imagine their roles can be similarly specc'd...Merrill is just a lot less squishy than Anders.

Does it make one a "Black Widow" to romance Anders, and then Kill him when he murders the Grand Cleric? Hmmmmmm.....

Surprised no one supports Rogue.
Another reason for Rogue for me is that I've played 2 Mages before until Deep Roads at the very least.

Oh don't get me wrong. I love my Rogue. She was awesome and insanely deadly. But mages just offer so much variety. Three damage dealing focused trees, three support trees and three specializations that (mostly) combine aspects of both. I'm totally in love with DA2 mages.
Which is kind of surprising since I took five runs in Origins before I made a successful mage.

Also, from my other mages, I gathered that 6 hotkeys (console player) is never enough for spells. I assume Rogues don't need as much.

My two cents, you should play rogue simply because you haven't yet. I've played all three: mages kick ASS, the arashok couldn't touch me in the dual (he could knock me down, but couldn't hurt me), the rogues are fun (both 2 handers or ranged bow) but more squishy for me than casters.  Warriors are least favorite, but they aren't in question, and of course they survive almost anything.

My vote goes to Rogue if you've never played one in DA2. Feels quite different from its Origins' counterpart and, if spec'ed right, a Rogue is a hell of a DPS-er. Single target, though, there are no AoE whatsoever (in Origins you had at least Whirlwind and Dual-Weapon Sweep). And, yes, it's squishier than a Mage and you're stuck with a tank in your team but the fun makes it up for the reserved slot. I personally used Aveline, I don't know about Fenris (never really used him since I don't like his character).

As for the big boss fights, I never had a problem. I was worried about the Arishok but he can be chain-stunned and put out of his self-righteous misery rather quickly - just move. A lot.
I'd advise to stock up on Passive Talents from class and Specialization trees (I went Shadow/Assassin, Dual Dagger). Also, Poisons and Grenades will make your life much easier, especially Combustion Grenade which basically works as a bonus, devastating Miasmic Flask every minute or so. The only downside is finding decent daggers in Act 1 and 2 - I became Champion wielding two rather anonymous Superior Dwarven Daggers before the ultimate weapons in Act 3.
Can't say anything about Archery, I don't like to sit in the back and shoot. Varric's more than enough, or you can always keep Merrill and Anders for more versality.

My two cents, have fun with whatever makes your day :)

It's sort of a "late bloomer", yes, first levels can be a pain when you lack many vital Talents. I begun to see the light towards the end of Act 1, right before the Expedition. Then it was all fun 'till the end.

I can't tap buttons fast (physical handicap). Do DW Rogues with Speed on consoles require button smashing?
That might be a turn off.....

Well, if you plan on DW Rougue I say its great using Twin Fangs combined with Assassinate Strike that can pretty much put almost anyone down, oh and causing inplosion from your enemies, always funny when you stab someone and they suddenly go *BOOM*.

/me raises hand

ROGUE!!!

Played mage first time. It's great early on, but really diminishes at higher levels. I left feeling cheated of the awesomeness I had in DA:O. There simply is no more awesomeness at around lvl 16.

Tried DW rogue and he is a murderer on the loose! He only gets better and better. I'm rated at almost 200 dps with well over 200% critical damage rating (no cheating). I have no doubts that this could get much higher. I also never went the stealth route. Never needed to, and this is on hard.

Tip: Since you're in the middle of it all, get a weapon with the "messy kills" tag. OH the FUN! Sometimes I have to pause the combat so I can find my next victim!

You might want to wait until the coming patch adds support for an autoattack option to consoles, especially if you go the dual weapon w/ Speed route.  (Hard for me to say for certain though, as I play on PC w/ an already extant autoattack feature.)

You can always just not use Speed but with daggers I suspect the attack speed will still be fairly brisk.  Bow is definitely a slower alternative but until the autoattack support is added to consoles, archery may be a more manageable experience for you than dual weapon.

With regards to the RP aspect it would make more sense to be a mage. If you go with a DW rogue then I recommend you raise the difficulty above normal if you want some challenge because by act II I was tearing through most the enemies effortlessly. I have yet to see how powerful an archer is compared to DW.

Go rogue. Running spirit healer is ok, but gets dull and spamming haste is also annoying. Sure its fun at first to use force mage powers and glyphs, but then you realise you are doing **** all. You are hard to kill though.

Regardless wether you build anders for dps or support you should always take the vengeance half of his specialisation tree. Swift justice and Matyr are awesome. Thanks to these two my Hawke has a semi permanent Haste.

A spirit healer hawke will have stronger heal than andrs but you have to invest quite a lot of point. The range of healing aura is also bugged, it is much shorter than it should be.

But to answer your question Mage Hawke kinda feel weaker in comparisson with a well built Rouge Hawke.
