How to know if your Fenris romance is borked?

In my new playthrough I wanted to see the Anders/Fenris/Isabela jealousy dialog--so I'd determined to have a just-for-fun fling with Isabela, before letting Fenris dump me after getting cold feet, and finally seeking solace in Anders' arms. Unfortunately it didn't quite work out like that... Isabela was easy to get into bed, of course, and perfectly happy to call it off afterwards. But despite choosing all the flirt options (and having high Rivalry) with Fenris, I couldn't seem to make the guy put out. After his Act II personal quest with Hadriana, when I chose the "Don't go" flirt option in the dialog at the Hawke mansion, he just said "I think it's better for us both if I do."
I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I'd read of people who hit this point and managed to recover, but after getting through most of Act II it had become obvious that Fenris wasn't coming back.
In the end I reloaded from the Year Four autosave, and this time I went and talked to Fenris *before* bedding Isabela. I noticed a difference in the dialog -- and I confirmed by comparing loaded saves from both games, chosing the exact same dialog options. In the "borked" playthrough (where I bedded Isabela first, even though I told her it was "just fun"), there are flirt options with Fenris--including the one where he'll ask if anyone else has your "attention," and tell you he's "considering it" with you--but one crucial heart option seems to be missing. That's in the Questioning Beliefs dialog where he tells you the story of his escape from Denarius, and explains that he has no memories of his life before. In the borked playthrough, after Fenris says "You and I don't always agree, but..." I have no flirt option. The "You were saying..." line is disabled. There are still flirt options in subsequent conversations, including the "Don't go" option in what's usually the immediate pre-sex conversation, but they don't trigger the romance scene.
I don't think this is a bug, but it is devious, as it is perfectly possible to get into a situation where Fenris will flirt with you all day long but has no intention of putting out. So I thought I would report--as I say, for Science--that the drunken Questioning Beliefs conversation is really crucial, and if you don't get the "You were saying..." line, then you aren't going to be bedding Fenris.

(I kid. This is good info for people who are looking for a particular outcome.)

Its annoying how friggen well the Bioware team has put into how character interact with you over the slightest of things.

Also, you must not have Merrill or Anders move into your house.

Yep, I hit both those requirements in both playthroughs. The only difference was that, in one, I slept with Isabela before going to talk to Fenris. It's apparently meaningful (or it's a bug).

At least in a game in which Hawke hasn't slept with anyone else, you can do the Questioning Beliefs conversation with him after A Bitter Pill and still sleep with Fenris. He just doesn't nearly accidentally rip Hawke's heart out first, and where's the fun in that? There's a recording of it here: The conversation is slightly different in a friendmance, but the scene is basically the same.

The part I find annoying is that everyone is either 1)omniscient or 2)can't resist telling everyone they slept with me.UltiPup wrote...

On a related topic, am I the only one that pictures Sandal offscreen standing where he usually does in the foyer, watching with a look of shock and horror because he doesn't understand what's happening?
Sometimes I also picture him shouting, "Stop hurting my mommy!". Then Bodahn pokes his head out from the plant that he is peeking from to remind Sandal that Hawke's not his mommy.

I've seen posts here and there that say you actually can bed Isabella and still get Fenris afterwards. The only time I tried it though it didn't work and I had to reload. Anyway it seems there is a way around, and it probably depends on dialog options you choose with Isabella.

I think it would have been an enriching thing to be able to romance someone after Fenris and then return to him - causing some jealousy / heart break in doing so OR, conversely, reject him on the basis that you've moved on, rather than the options we have currently.

I think Fenris is the only one who won't let you sleep with anyone else first. He's just that kind of guy. I think Merrill & Anders and Isabela are the ones more likely to still still sleep with you maybe. Though even then it's probably risky and not worth bothering to try.
That's not the case. My Hawke slept with Isabella, then Fenris. He never cared.
To the OP: My first playthrough had my Hawke do the same exact thing you are aiming for: slept with Isa, slept with and got left behind by Fen, and then sought comfort with Anders. (Didn't do it on purpose, but it ended up that way!) You don't seem to get the option to hook back up with Fen officially until Act III. I missed the opportunity, though, as I was stuck with crazy mage boy at my mansion.

What I thought was the only maybe pitfall with the Fenris relationship is that he leaves all awkward and... apparently... expects Hawke not to look at anyone else in the 3 year span before he goes ahead and tries to make up for his leaving.

I couldn't agree more. I was under the impression that I'd somehow screwed up the Fenris romance, and so moved on to Anders just for the hell of it. Then once I got more quest options with Fen in Act III and wanted to dump Anders for Fen again, I couldn't. Then I find out on the forums that you have to have Hawke wait three years for Fen? Whaaaaaa? Hawke disapproves -100.

Only thing I know, is you can flirt yourself silly in the first Act and it won't effect Fenris at all, but you can't so much as look at anyone else in the 2nd if you want him back later.
actually as long as you do fenris quests first iin the second act and have wall time or the other way, you can go flirt with anders and he says he will come to see you at your home that night. when he shows up and says justice does not approve of his obssesion with hawke. if you choose the broken heart option he insults fenris saying he saw you together and then storms off. the romance with fenris can continue as normal after that...on the friendship path with fenris anyways, not sure about the rival path.
