Beating the game for the *millionth* time, I've finally realized something. EDI said that the reaper that the *collectors* were currently developing was "human." Anytime they (collectors/reapers) work on a reaper it takes form of the resources currently being used to make such reaper. The human-reaper larva we've encounter was at one point prothean, and before that, who knows. It was later converted to a human reaper.
So my theory is this, the reapers were created based on how whatever the species that *made* them. For example, the reapers turned the collectors into insect looking bad guys overtime. The collector ship looks like an insect hive.
Is it safe to say, that IF the reapers were created, that the species that created them was an insect? The shape of the reaper also looks like an insect, (an also a squid).
Maybe I'm reading to far into things...

The squiddiness is a nod to the Cthulu mythos, probably. Ancient gods awakening from beyond the darkest reaches of space to come charging in and destroy us all, blah blah blah.

Not to mention that the Keepers are also insect like. I suppose it's possible, although it may be that insect like shells allow semi synthetics to perform greater tasks.

Gee, I would love too! Considering the ME case I have is a GameStop cover with some random PoP (proof of purchase) code at the bottom, and the site won't accept it. Lost the original case, the guys at my local gamestop were nice enough to give me that case.

Yeah, I see that BioWare has their buttcheeks clenched too tight and require that people must register their game in order to get access to certain sub-forums on the boards. Isn't it enough I'm registered online? (Case is missing as well).
Moving on, I agree with the squid and insect thing. The keepers resemble insects, possibly another race the reapers harvested to reaper the citadel? Mordin said everything was replaced by tech (when it came to the collectors). Also if you read the books, Grayson became mostly tech as well.
I think the keeprs were the first victims (maybe the creators?). The origin has to be a squid-like insect.
