This *may* be a computer problem rather than a dragon age problem. In short - I suspect my new computer is f'd. It's windows 7, 64bit. I've been getting a blue screen error, having to restore windows, and then everything working fine BUT dragon age. This has occurred since installing dragon age - I'm to start testing tonight whether it's stable without it (yey for a format and reinstalling windows. Sigh.)

Install dragon age and play. Much glorious fun. Turn off computer for blissful sleep. After work the next day: Windows failed to start, system restore (ok!), then blue screen of death.
Turning off then on gave the same windows not
working message, but this time it got to startup repair successfully,
did a system restore.

It ran that, restarted, and it got to windows ok... and then ran
perfectly again. Except for dragon age: origins. "The application has
failed to start because d3dx9_36.dll was not found. Re-installing the
application may fix this problem."

Hmm... first fix - reinstalled windows and most recent video and sound drivers, windows updates, gmail notifer, divX, avast and dragons age. That's it. Worked fine.
Repeat: Much glorious fun. Turn off computer for blissful sleep. After work the
next day: Windows failed to start, system restore (ok!), then blue
screen of death.
Turning off then on gave the same windows not
working message, but this time it got to startup repair successfully,

perfectly again. Except for dragon age: origins. "The application has
failed to start because d3dx9_36.dll was not found. Re-installing the

This time - I reinstall directX, and then get a PhysXLoader.dll is missing error instead. Ok. Download the Nvidia software thing (I'm on ATI), install, play dragon age, much fun, blissful sleep...

Next day: windows failed to start, system restore (ok!), then blue screen of death.

At this point, I screamed. Tonight's task is JUST installing windows and the gfx drivers, and testing it tomorrow. I doubt dragon age is the problem, but thought I'd run this by you guys just in case.

And if it Is NOT the problem - how do I keep my save files/downloadable content? Can I reinstall and add the downloadable content without going online - my test if the PC passes the 'just windows and gfx driver' test is to add dragon age but NOT let it go online.

you obviously have an unrelated system problem that is causing your OS to fail and the system restore is taking you to a point before you have updated directx and physx.
Before you wipe your pc the best thing to do would be to insert the windows disc and click install. When given the option install as an upgrade. This keeps all your settings and programs as they are. ( back up anything important just in case ) and when that has finished be sure to run the M4 updater until there are no more updates, re-install your graphics drivers and the physx fix and you should be good to go. I'm almost sure this is not a game issue.

I'm almost sure it's not a game issue too, but threw it up here just in case.

However - the system restore can't take me to before direct x is updated, surely, as I'm putting the game onto a new version of windows... unless it's taking it back to part way through the installation? Unless dragon age comes with a newer version of directX than windows 7, which doesn't sound right?

What is the M4 updater?

Sometimes I hate computers.

sorry I meant M$ (microsoft) updater.

system restore is taking you back to whatever your last system restore point is and will keep doing so unless you update a restore point after you have installed the game and any updates.

Your system restore point, if you are not managing it yourself could be a month or more old.

The computer's brand new - and I reinstalled windows (with format) just before loading dragon age. It can't take me back more than a day!

Had the same problem (missing d3dx9_36.dll), installed the bundled directX and it's working fine now.
