Nothing can compete with the romance I have going on with Varric entirely in my own head.

My favorite?  Having a rivalry fling with Fenris and then running to Anders when Fenris ditches you.

Romance with Anders on the friendship path (haven't done rivalry yet) is just too sweet and tragic.  I keep on coming back to him.  I can't help it.  Rivalmance with Fenris is hot and all, but that's the kind of relationship I see going sour in time.

I haven't tried either Merrill or Isabela.

Yeahhhh after done romancing Izzy, Fenris, Merrill (in order), I romanced Anders. Then .. guess what I just fell into this romantic guy and I couldn't stop myself going back to him :P two rivalmances and one friendmance are just not enough.

So far, I've done the friend and rival path for Isabela and the friend romance path for Anders. I don't really like Fenris all that much as a character and Merril is just too...ditzy? young?...something. Isabela is my favorite at the moment, I just like her pirate style. Although the Anders romance with my male mage Hawke did have a certain poignancy to it there at the end, I may try a replay as a rivalmance just to see how that feels.

I've done friendship romance with everyone except Merril, who I rivalmanced. My order depends on what I am looking for in a playthrough.

My first romance was friendship/Anders. My heart, it was shattered into a million teeny, tiny pieces, and it was awesome. So if I am looking for something depressing with the bonus of being really wrapped up in the main theme of the game, Anders is the go-to guy, in my opinion.

If I want a happy ending, though, Isabela all the way. I really enjoyed her romance (surprising, since I didn't expect to like her that much, let alone want to romance her), the moment where she returns (and what follows) feels extra "d'awwwww" if she's your sort-of girlfriend at the time, and there is, like. Hope at the end. That you two will sail off and be happy.

Fenris is alright, but I much prefer just being his friend, I think. There's nothing wrong with him, and I get why he pushes some people's buttons, but he's a pickypants that you can derail off the romance track by accident and never know you did so, and that annoys me like crazy. So I mostly like to flirt with him and be his friend, but he's not worth the effort of romancing to me.

Merrill is my least favorite. It's not that it's bad, exactly, she is just nothing like what I would want in a partner, and nothing like any of my Hawkes would (usually) want. There's too much of a sense of either hero worship (on the part of Merrill) or overprotectiveness (on the part of Hawke) which I know some people like, but doesn't really do it for me.

I love Merrill to death, I absolutely do, but she's far too much of a little sister to my Hawke.  I think romancing her would just feel weird.  Besides, with Bethany dead and Carver...being Carver, my Hawke needs a replacement sibling.

I pretty much agree with you. Ander is the best one if someone wants something .. emotional (though some people claims that his romance is cheesy).

Romancing Isabella is actually most sensible/moderate option mainly because she doesn't have "cause" "hatred" "mission" and such things that others have. So there isn't much weight on romancing her.

Fenris ... I don't know. I like romancing him but as you have said, there isn't much difference in between being a friend of him and being his lover. Of course the last battle conversation is very different though.

I never really liked having Merrill as a lover. She seems so .. like .. little stubborn sister that I need to take care of.

Edit: Wow my grammer fails so badly .. I guess I'm just too tired.

Yeah, I think the sister thing is what's really putting the brakes on the Merrill romance. I just want to be her big sister (even when I'm playing a dude), and nothing else.

Oh.... I thought this was more of the issue that him staying with you if you sided with the templars was impossible ingame because the opition was removed at the last minute.

My favorite has to be the Anders Friendship Romance, which is indeed something incredibly emotional and tragic.

Fenris rivalmance - I'm playing it right now - is very good too, but, as a player, I'm partial to Anders ;)

Since the writer of Anders have said that it is in game and no devs comes to clearify if it has been cut out at the last minute, we are thinking that it's just bugged.

So far I've "rivalmanced" Fenris and now on my second playthrough I am rivalmancing Anders.

As I haven't even completed my pro-templar rival-mance with Anders, it's probably too early to compare, but so far I think I prefer Fenris as a romanceable character. I'm not sure why... maybe I just like grumpy men! It could also be because I know what Anders ends up doing having finished DA2 already... I think a rivalmance with Anders is the only one I could bring myself to finish, because at least I get to call him and jerk and insult him (sorry Anders fan) - and he keeps coming back for more!

Spoilers:
That said, it does have its sweet moments, but so far I find Anders/Justice and his mage manifesto a little bit intense. I've cringed at bits of the dialog (yes mr I "ache" for you - at least you didn't say "throb") but other parts have been golden: I particularly enjoyed Hawke describing Justice as "like an unwilling participant in a threesome" and then responding to "I love you" with "Do you want a sandwich?".

Finally I did like Ander's first kiss cutscene, just not as much as Fenris'. Mind you, not too sure about Anders' kiss VO... for a minute I thought Hawke's dog had snuck in to provide the sound effects...

I romanced Anders my very first playthrough. I was SO EXCITED, because Anders was by far my utterly favorite character, even over Alistair (who I <3<3<#). Then, he went and blew up the chantry. I was so in love and deluded and 100% believed him when he lied to me. It didn't even DAWN on me that he WOULD.

And then..

"MAKER NOOOOO"

and I was done. I finished the playthrough with him because my Rogue would have loved him dispite uber terrorism. But, he'd broken my heart.

I haven't been able to romance him since. :( I ran off into the sunset with Fenris every other playthrough. Friendmance-Fenris is just adorable, and I can't bring myself to make him give me red points :(

Fenris, especially playing a mage on the rivalry path.

Anders says all the right things in Act 1 & 2 to make a romantically-inclined girl swoon, but I think they dropped the ball in Act 3. By that time I really felt he didn't/couldn't love me at all ("There is no one in Kirkwall I wouldn't kill to see mages free") - the plight of mages is all he is. Also, the rival romance was baaarely different than the friendship romance, for shame!

No interest in the ladies, so I can't comment.

That's the point,  in the friendmance by year 6 he's pretty much just Vengence in an Anders body. He should be more manic and tortured in the rivalmance at this point personally, and he does seem to be, if only slightly.

I'm not sure how anyone can rivalmance Fenris. I want him to genuinly love me, not hate-love me! :crying::crying::crying:

Well my first playthrough i went with a friendmance anders and was totally heartbroken and frustrated and wanted to harm kittens by the end! (loved it!) Was a bit concerned i was gonna get stuck on him like i got stuck on Alistair in Origins, but it was easier than i expected. Second playthrough i friendmanced Fenris and totally swooned over him too! (those eyes! and that voice! mm...). Third playthrough i was kinda flirting with everyone but somehow ended up with Merill, only flirted with her once, didn't really like her romance but then i had missed out on a lot of the flirting. Have yet to romance Isabella or Sebastian, not sure if i can be bothered with Seb.
So my list goes:
Rivalmanced Anders
Friendmanced Fenris
Friendmanced Anders

Although i do change my mind between Anders and Fenris a lot! I just wish they'd made Seb a full romance too ><

This! i was totally wrapped up in the romance, i didn't even question the ingredients he wanted, i just naively assumed he was doing exactly what he said he was, freeing Justice. I didn't even twig how odd it was that he wanted me to have a chat with the grand cleric.....:crying:

@Heidenreich - I know that's the point, and my issue is it worked! Honestly if you had the option to ditch Anders in Act 3 and go back to Fenris I think that'd be my plan on most playthroughs: romance Fenris, Anders until Act 3, end with Fenris.

Rivalry!Fenris doesn't hate my mage Hawke! You can easily be rivals with him based on your decisions and still be nice/polite & flirty with him in conversations. Also, normal couples in my estimation need a good fight or two...and nothing beats that "Festis bei umo canaverum" scene. MMM MMM, the frustration and passion are excellent. Friendship!Fenris in that scene just seems a bit too "old, settled couple"-y.

I've only done Isabela (friend with my female mage) and Fenris (friend with my female warrior) so far, but I've watched the Sebastian and Merrill romances. I'm holding off on watching Anders' because I'd like to see it for myself (planning on friend with female rogue). Of the ones I've seen/done, however, my favorite is Fenris with Isabela in second. Sebastian, while physically gorgeous, requires too much effort with too much Maker-this, Maker-that. And while Merrill is a decent, even cute, character outside of a romance, that she looks, sounds, and acts too much like a kid makes her romance creepy.

I've heard good, non-spoilerish things about the Anders romance, though. I'm curious whether I'll like it more than Fenris'. He's kinda been put on hold for the Sims Medieval, however >.>.

1. Anders (either path)
2. Rivalmance Fenris
3. Friendmance Izzy

I really liked Anders' romance because of the end of the game and how those events impact it. So tragic! I can't be turned off by the fact that he ripped Hawke's heart out of his chest, and I don't like saying that the other LIs are better simply because they are more... sensible choices. All aboard the crazy train!

Rivalmanced Fenris was just fun because I liked to make him angry, heehee.

And of course, who doesn't want a tumble or two with Isabela?

Favorites are Fenris and Anders. Just can't stand Merrill's goofball babbling enough to even give her a go. Isabela is TOO easy, and her voice is starting to grate on me. Rival Prince marrying the Vicountess is a great idea, but he acted like we never had anything real in the end, rival or friend.

My first impression of Fenris was, ASS. But I gotta say, his romance had huge payoffs IMO. I just wish he'd have moved in my place the third Act. It's kinda fun seeing your BF at home now and then. I like that Anders moves in, but even though he gives you a good little send off speech at the end, he does NOT deliver a proper end game snog like Fen does.

Merril is the main romanced I pursued. I did want to see what happened if I tried Merrill and Isabela, but even if you tell Isabella you want her (after sleeping with Merrill), she just gives up on you without actually saying it.

I wanted to romance Anders properly, but he's just so extreme and douchey and when you eventually see what he does... :(
