Frankly both Fenris and Anders are kind of creepy in their own ways. Anders jumps you the second he sees you and Fenris steals you family crest after (a potentially) one night stand. Then refuses to talk about it for the next 3 years before pouncing on you.

Then wears it on his hip and steals some red cloth thing of Hawkes.

Merill does have that "put it down."

The closest thing to a normal relationship is Izzy.

Alastair sigh - my first playthrough in DA:O I killed Conner <it broke my heart> and then to have Alastair scream at me about it - I never did romance Alastair past that point  or in any other playthrough.

Aw.  I figure every LI is allowed one, maybe two, irrational moments.  As long as they're not, y'know, blowing up a building in those moments.  lol

Or running off to become a drunk when the final battle of the blight is nigh.

Well at that point it's Alistair who wants none of the Warden and her Loghainy ways.

I heard that Fenris comes back to you in act 3...several years later. If you played through this, how does he explain it? His flashes went away, or something? If it was such a deal-breaker for him, how was it resolved?

Here's how he explains it.  MAJOR SPOILER.  The scarf, though, is not a trophy, nor is the crest he is also wearing.

Edit: I do not like the 3 year gap either.  It would have worked better, for me at least, had it been a 6 month gap.  A year tops.  I just reconcile it with either in a friendmance that they did kind of get back together after Leandra, and in a rivalmance, that they still care a lot about each other but are too stubborn to admit it until there comes a point where Hawke realizes that Fenris does need that support and quits being stupid.

Second edit: Anders romance creeped me out -- I honestly felt trapped and stalked.  Part of that was when I desperately wanted to get out of it, there were no options to break up.

I love both the rival and friend romances for Fenris.  I just wish there was more to them.

You know all the characters have serious issues when the thieving pervert who dumps you in the middle of the game is the most normal.

(For the record, I like Izzy.)

Yeah i keep pondering things like this ^^, the first 2 acts hes all lovely, but by the third its like hes not even listening to hawke at all, in one of his convos in act 3 it can play out as:
Hawke: i love you
Anders: war is coming!

Which makes me wonder all kinds of dark things.....
Also his end fight speech is terrible, still ranting on about damn templars and no kisses >< I want kisses before battles god dammit!

Really?  My Hawke managed to rather handily turn one of those convos into implied sex.  You know the one where he starts out scolding Merrill for not drawing the curtains?  The "funny" option cuts his rant short and definitely leads to something.

And I found his speech at the end rather sweet.  But I did want a kiss, especially since the (bugged) rivalry speech got a kiss.

Fenris is my favourite, took the friendship romance on my first run with intention of Anders romance in run 2... but after what happens I just can't bring myself to make my Hawkes romance him.
So it's just Fenris now...which is fine with me <3.

My new Mage Hawke just started on rivalmance path with Fenris, I'm looking forward to seeing what the differences are.

If I can ever manage to create a male hawke I can relate to (two failures so far), they will romance Isabella - I love her, she's fun.

I wasn't angry for what he did, but it made me doubt that he had ever loved Hawke at all.

Exactly. My favourite point in his romance is where he tells mage Hawke "I would drown us in blood to keep you safe," and I wish something would come out of it. Maybe Hawke was threatened by the templars, and that would cause Anders to snap. Anything to show that his actions at the end were affected at all by the romance with Hawke. As it stands, after listening to him blackmailing Hawke into helping him with the potion, I have doubts Anders had any feeling for Hawke at all. He's the only one I know who actually asks rather insistently to move in. Maybe he was just using Hawke to get a shelter from the templars.

I couldn't complete the romance because my diplomatic Hawke wanted to kill him on the spot.    Heartbroken Hawke felt as if she was being used so he could hide out and get access to places he wouldn't be able to without her.  I blame Justice taking over in Act 3.  I think the romance with Anders is well done.  It's just the betrayal thing.  Maybe a snarky or iron fist Hawke is better suited for Anders.

My mage is in a  friendmance with Fenris right now.  Love it!!  This is my favorite.  Started out with rivalmance.  I started my playthrough again for friendmance.  My take on the three year breakup is  that Fenris and Hawke were broken up, but Fenris was wearing her crest and scarf to keep up appearances?   Fenris tells Anders that the relationship is done.  Is he testing Hawke?  You can start up a romance with Anders after they are intimate.  IDK three years is too long considering Hawke and Fenris are still adventuring together.  I could see Fenris shutting down the conversation everytime Hawke would try to discuss what happened that night.

Loved the Fenris romance. I thought it was touching and emotional and in reality relationships do have tough periods. I think it means something if you wait for Fenris over the 3 year gap instead of giving up on him, so it didn't bother me much.

Next play-through I am going to do another female Hawke but romance Isabelle. She seems really fun and I didn't get to see a lot of her my first play-through because I was playing as a rogue. If Fenris wasn't around I would have much rather been with her than Anders.

In terms of story and development, definitely Anders.

At first I liked Merrill, and I still think she's the most attractive of your teammates...but the actual romance felt like an afterthought. You can barely flirt with her for half the game, then you do her quest in Act 2 and she suddenly loves you?

She's loved you ever since she's really gotten to know you. Why that is depends on whether you're a man or a woman.

[EDIT] I agree that there wasn't enough flirting, though. I think hers is my favorite as far as the flavor of the romance and the story it tells, but the implementation was lacking for me.

I felt that way about *all* of the romances (not enough flirting)... I would have loved to have more touching, kissing, etc. Like... holding hands or an arm around the shoulders when comforting after All That Remains, and romance-related scenes. That would have been nice.

Very true, on all counts. But Merrill's has struck me as the most egregiously flirt-lacking of the bunch. And so often, the flirting nature seemed to go straight over her head. There weren't enough flirts, and when there were, she didn't even react D:

This was an annoying problem for me. They needed to let you break up with a romance decisively whenever you wanted to, rather than potentially trapping yourself in one because you didn't want to break up in a particular conversation. I was in that stupid semi-with-Isabela limbo with her, and while that's a perfectly fine place for her to be, it wasn't for that Hawke and I wanted to break up with her for real. I wound up with Merril just so I'd be in a relationship people assumed I was in that I was ACTUALLY IN.

They also needed to let me make out with my LI whenever I wanted, but that was slightly less important.

You could initiate a break-up in Origins, couldn't you?

My favorite was Fenris, I have only friendmanced him but I can't really bring myself to romance another. I loved the heated passion between my Hawke and Fenris. I also liked that you get more than one hot kiss from him. Image IPB

I actually did Anders first but I don't know, felt the romance was lacking the passion that Fenris and Hawke had.

Also you get 2 kisses from him in Act 2  and then nothing, not even a kiss at the end when you have sided with

him and stood by him all that time. So now I only romance Fenris and occasionally sleep with Isabela.

You could break off a romance at any time you wanted in Origins -- up to right before the archdemon.

And yes, I agree strongly.  More kissing was needed.  A couple more romance conversations -- EXCLUSIVELY romance (like in Origins), and the ability to kiss your LI at the home.

One of my dwarf ladies, the one who was going to feed herself to the archdemon, totally dumped Zev right before the archdemon, because in her messed up brain that would be better for him. Good times!

Dammit, now I'm all "waaah, fix the DA:O cameo bugs" again.

Actually, I kind of wish that they'd tell me when romances end. I understand that they have a catch-all type so you don't get to romance both leliana and morrigan by just not talking to them so that they break up with you, but it would be nice to have a cutscene type conversation that happens after the fact.

Heh, yeh, my first playthrough I actually spent a bit of time wondering if Fenris and Hawke had really broken up (commented about it on my status, because I found the whole thing annoying).  I mean, yeh, he left, and yeh, he told Anders it was over, but he was wearing Hawke's crest and of course the scene after Leandra he was there.  Then act 3 with him getting jealous over Zevran AND Anders confronting Hawke (I was kind of avoiding talking to Fenris so I got those scenes first) it seemed like they were back together, but there was no anything to indicate one way or the other.

Ah well.  I agree it would be nice to know what's going on with the romances.  The only reason I saw Fenris' romance through unspoiled was because Anders was strictly in neutral so I couldn't initiate anything with him.

I guess having the approval meter say the actual romance status would take some of the unknowing from both Isabela and Fenris, but it's weird anyway.
