How does DA2's music compare to DA:O's?

All in all I thought it was ok, not exactly amazing.

Edit: I downloaded the soundtrack on my Mac (got it free with the SE) so I could listen to it while working and it's just finished.
There are some "nice" tracks, but nothing amazing. The Origins OST is definately more to my taste.

The slow moment tunes that were recycled really got on my nerves.

A proper original soundtrack should be treated as part of the game not and not as a standalone piece of work, but in DA2 the soundtrack is mostly relegated to filling silence and thats unfortunate.
Hanged Man fight music is my favourite too.

I also liked the music in DAII a lot.
But will I get hurt if I say that as far as emotion goes, NOTHING grabs me like the music segments playing during the suicide mission in ME2?

I preferred the score from DAO, to be honest.. I still get tingles and fuzzies every time I hear it even though DAO has lost much of it's shine in my eyes. The music though...fantastic.

Yup that one is just fantastic.
As to DAO/DA2, DAO music score all the way. It fits the fantasy setting perfectly.
The DA2 score just feels forgettable.

Bioware game music is so ambient you barely notice it. And they don't seem to have any dramatic pieces of music that you find in cutscenes from other games.

The OST of DA2 is much like the game itself: rushed, largely forgettable and all-around disappointing.I can't remember even ONE song from Dragon Age 2, yet whenever I listen to I am the One, I just feel a sense of epicness

It's a pity though that both released soundtrack do not include all of the epicness of the two games. The DA:O soundtrack for example does not include the ominous sort-of-orthodox-Christian chant we can sometimes hear in the Chantries in Thedas and the DA2 does not have the intense strings we hear when we select our party (or Hawke at the very beginning).

Origins was far more varied, though compositionally, i think DAII is superior. I'm an especially big fan of the whispy slide riff used in DAII's Love Theme.

The DA2 music feels more alive to me, whereas the music in Origins felt like it was found in the basement and dusted off after being in a box for 2 decades.
It also sound like they've used a larger variety of instruments on the sound track for DA2, giving it a lot of unique flavours, like the song in the Hanged Man to mention but one.
Then there's also the sound effects and ambient sounds (I know we're not really discussing that here) that are also much better than Origins.
I have to admit, in Origins, I got sick of the music by my second playthrough. Felt very repetitive.
I'm on my third playthrough of DA2 and still very much enjoy the music.
[edit] I'll also add that Origins music sounded a bit too classical fantasy to me. This time around, it has more character and is more unique to Dragon Age.

After listening to every song on the downloadable soundtrack you get with SE, there was only 2 i liked from DA2, which was the main theme and Fenris song (and i didn't even like Fenris, and why is he the only companion that gets his own theme).
And they were only pretty good not truly great like some from Origins.

I liked what I generally think of as Anders theme in DA2.
There's a bit of the DA2 combat music which always makes me think of "Food, Glorious Food" from Oliver!, which is a bit strange.

But loved the music in the Hanged man and Isabela's theme. To name a few.

The soundeffects contain such an idiotic amount of screaming I turned it down very low very fast before my neighbours called the cops.

Conversely, while DA2's soundtrack wasn't amazing, it at least was trying to step away from the fake LotR vibe, which I appreciated. And I really loved Fenris' theme, to the point where I'm probably going to put it on my ipod playlist with some of the excellent music in JRPGs (though I'm personally kinda done with JRPGs, you have to admit that the music from most of them is exceptional). And there's also some little bits I kinda liked, like whatever Hawke's family theme is and one of the boss battle tracks (can't remember what one). But still, they have a looooong way to go before getting to a "good" soundtrack. The credits song was sooooo wonderful though.
But I think DA2's a step in the right direction, if for no other reason than the music at least seems more original (even if some of it's not very good), than Origins was. Hopefully if they give the composer more time for DA3 it'll at least be at the level of "not bad".
