I didn't really notice the music in 2.

A problem with many WRPGs. You don't really notice them the same way you do with JRPGs. JRPG soundtracks are so damn well composed(Nobuo Uematsu is a God!)

Addai has never played the following:

Morrowind
Oblivion
Planescape: Torment
Baldur's gate II: Throne of Bhaal
The Witcher

If you have... I'm sorry to report that... I cant'.... I'm going to... :(......:crying:

Er, what does that have to do with anything?  I've played Oblivion and The Witcher.

GOD NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! WHERES THAT DAMN OFFICE VIEDO?!

Please go to youtube and check 'The River of Life' from the Witcher soundtrack... for me :crying:

Calm down, dude. I don't have audio right now so will have to listen to it later. Or you could just tell me what your point is.

 I was only playing around. No point really just plain ignorance on my part. I am in-love with WRPG music. An example of great music is the Gothic 3 soundtrack (Vista Point,) and only my previous one.

But still, I get where your coming from. Once you've heard one, you've heard them all ^.^ that is of course. If you've played Planescape: Torment, or Morrowind. Those two are just... <3

I never said I dislike wrpg music. I don't have a lot to compare it to. Between DAO and DA2, though, I didn't really notice DA2's music, except the recycled stuff from Origins ('why is the mage tower music playing for Wounded Coast?' etc.) and Fenris' theme which was just sort of there.

My favorite from recent games is Fallout 3's theme, also by Inon Zur. I love that.

I love that too, it's very... well, harsh in a way. It really captures the theme. But where going of topic there. Sorry for the short burst of what is my mental **** storm.

P.S Love your writings btw :-)

As Elhanan said they do enhance both their games I think.

And like Nedpepper I too fell in love with two 30 Seconds From Mars songs because of DAO! I am glad I am in very good company! *waves at Ned*

Both were okay but not great. DAO was more generic fantasy stuff and overall less interesting, but the individual tracks had greater depth and fit the scenes they were used in much better. Elves At the Mercy of Man, The Nature Of The Beast, Leliana's Song, I Am The One are among those that stood out.

DA2's music was more folky, more pop-y, and a little bit gaelic. It was shallower, smaller and didn't really fit the scenes well. However, listened on their own a number of tracks stood out; the Main Theme, Hawke Family Theme, Fenris's Theme, etc.

All in all, I would give the slight edge to DAO. That being said, while both efforts are solid, I think as long as Inon Zur is in charge the Dragon Age games will never be known for their music. If Bioware really wants to remedy that, then all I can say is Jack Wall eats Inon Zur alive (Example A, Example B, Example C). And if Mr. Wall is too busy with his Mass Effect commitments, then try Jeremy Soule (Example D, Example E, Example F).

That's very kind of you.  :)  Oh and yeah, I do love that Witcher theme.  That's the one that I remember most from the game, probably because it's on the loading screens- heh.  Nicely melancholic.

Oh- I do have to give Fallout New Vegas props for the ambient music.  I understand some of that came from the first Fallout games.  I liked the one where it sounds like an air raid siren.  Appropriately creepy.  (apparently it's called the Freeside Theme)

But yeah, anyway, DA2 music...  I just meant nothing really stood out to me from it.

I really liked Mass Effect's music and especially ME2.  I play some of it on MP3.  Fell asleep once playing the Collector Base theme and dreamt I was falling down those big platforms.   I also like the Normandy (spoiler mumblemumble) theme.

This is one of the few areas where DA2 felt like a real letdown to me. While I did love many tunes (Qunari on the rise probably being my favorite), the combat music wasn't much to my liking. Also, I felt that there was a significant lack of music during important sequences, such as the speeches at the end. So I would certainly give the edge to Origins in the music department.

Although since it has been mentioned, the ME2 soundtrack beats them both in my book. :)

I only played ME2 briefly (thanks for my copy BioWare), so I could play ME1 first. But I have watched hubby play ME2 and it was fantastic as a soundtrack. When I get to play myself, I will really pay attention to it.

DA2 music was ok.  There were more memorable tracks in DA:O, but all in all, I think the DA2 score did alright.

Mass Effect 2's soundtrack was just fantastic. Jack Wall is a legend. The three most memorable tracks for me are The Lazarus Project, The Normandy Reborn and of course Suicide Mission. They fit their scenes like custom-made gloves and have such amazing depth that they basically tell their parts of the story all by themselves, just by listening to them.

Also, the original Mass Effect was one of the few games I almost love to restart over and over again, all because of the intro with the text craw, the Mass Effect logo, the Normandy, Shepard walking to the cockpit, and most importantly this music playing during it, fitting every actions and transitions in the sequence perfectly and almost just telling the story all by itself.

Dragon Age 2's music was good, but some of them were pretty short. (Inon Zur did say he was rushed when he was composing). Like, I thought the Main theme of Dragon Age 2 was really interesting, but it kind of peaked and stopped. The music in Dragon Age: Origins had some repeats but were awesome in the aspect that they tried to create the music for different atmospheres, for ex. the dark and deep music of Orzamaar, the companionship music in the Party Camp, and the softer tunes in the Forest.

Personally, I think anybody who says DAO's soundtrack was better is doing so purely out of nostalgia. When I heard the Ostagar theme playing when I met up with some Grey Wardens (at the climax of act 2) I almost teared up from the overwhelming nostalgia. I don't know about 'half' of the soundtrack being from DAO, but I can only recall hearing the aforementioned Ostagar theme, the Dwarf theme, and the Lake Calenhad theme (which frankly I think was put to better use here, in an area that was frequently revisited other than a 5 minute visit to the docks.)

I loved DAO just as much as everybody else, but I can never shake the feeling that the music was so generic. I do agree that it had a very LOTR sound, and I think it worked against the game. DAO  was the first game I played after going on a 5 year gaming hiatus, and even I coud tell that it wasn't very unique. (Am I the only one that hates 'Darkspawn in the Wilds'? Every time I hear it I have nightmares about the Kocari Wilds, the miserable 'I don't want to do this but I have to' kind of nightmare...)

I do admit that there were some stand-out tracks that I did like, such as Nature of the Beast, The Common Dwarf,  and some of the cinematic pieces. But most of the ambient and battle music was just noise to me, and not memorable at all. Although my favorite track had to have been the main theme, though it would have been nice and dangerously epic to have it actually play in game.

DA2, while not the best I've heard, did well in that it had a distinct sound. While DAO was very high fantasy, DA2 sounded more unique, in that it had a highland touch, with some elements of folk in it. I adored those string riffs (as seen in Fenris Theme, Love Theme, those vocal tracks that rean't even in the game...) and the acoustic and natural sound the tracks have. I did like that there were actual character themes that reoccured (Fenris Theme (<333) Qunari on the Rise(<333) Arishok etc.) which is something I would have liked more of.

I do believe like it's predeccessor DA2's battle tracks were not memorable, and that is something I would definately like to see improvement on.

ALSO I do so love DA2's main theme as well, and again wish they would include it in the main game. AND I think iy would be great if the horn fanfare that occurs in both of the main themes could be a reoccuring thing throughout the series (Pretty please?):wizard:

Not nostalgia. I have both soundtracks as MP3s and OGGs on my hard drive and still listen to them from time to time. I arrived at my conclusion through my best attempt at side-by-side objective comparison. I simply thought DAO's soundtrack was less interesting but had better depth, more consistent quality and better scene integration, while DA2's soundtrack had more character, but it was also shallower, the quality varied wildly and the tracks were more thematic than scene-integral.

Dynamics of varying human opinions should always be considered in a topic such as this.

And I won't say half the people who like DA2's sound track are doing so only because they really loved DA2 more than DAO, but I do find it funny that half of it is from DAO's soundtrack like nepp said.

Ah yeah, no. I really hate when people assume why one likes or dislikes something.

Me too! I thnk DA2 has some great songs in it. I liked it. DAO is better, but it was for a longer game and had more time! DA2's still made me happy to listen to it.

Just what is "LOTR music"?  Tolkien didn't write any music.

I would not say that Origins music stood out much to me, though I do like the Dark Fantasy version of the main theme.  But DA2 recycled a lot of it and didn't add much as far as I can see.

Bolded part.

Seem a few don't realise that a good chunk of DA2's music was recycled from Origins.

but DA2 is new and shiny - not recycled or full of cut/paste stuff from Bioware games.
