There are many characters and events in DA:O and DA:2 that peak our interest as to what will happen next in this wonderful story...
DRAGONS, DEMONS, AND DARKSPAWN
- What role will the remaining Old Gods have?
- What role will Flemeth have?
- What role will the Architect have in the future ( If allowed to live by Warden Commander )
- What will be the future of the Darkspawn? ( + Architect )
- What purpose will the Darkspawn Serve? ( - Architect )
HEROES, SAVIORS AND SANDAL
- What future story will the Hero of Fereldan have?
- What purpose will Morrigan and the God-Child have?
- What purpose does the Ancient Dalish/Arlathan book have?
- The status of the Champion of Kirkwall and his future involvment ( Regarding Everything )
- What purpose will Sandal have? ( His god like lethality to his enemies, his strange connection to magic and enchantments, and his eerie foreshadowing )
THE REST
- What will the struggle of Mages and Templars have on the future of stories?
- What purpose will Leliana serve?
- How did she survive? ( If killed )
- How are the fates of the Champion of Kirkwall and Hero of Fereldan linked?
-------------------------
These are all the question I could think of that left me puzzled at the end of the game, feel free to post more questions you had regarding DA:O and DA:2 and the link between them regarding the future. I will be happy to add them to the list.
Perhaps through our combined efforts we can try and put together some resonable answers to the questions, I for one will be replaying both games in order and looking through the codex and examing the dialogue closesly.

Sandal is the most interesting. Who is contacting him and why? Or is that just meant to make us scratch our foreheads?

Keep in mind if you even bring up old gods. Whose Old Gods? Which are really at work. The Elven's Forgotten Ones or the Gods the Tevinter Imperium Worshiped? Will the Elven Gods that were banished to the Heavens ever be freed? Are the Elven Entities known as the Forgotten Ones and the Tevinter's Dragons linked?

Of course there will be trouble if Bioware really decides to give gods a bigger role in the story, since the different races and nations in Thedas belive in different things. But I don't think Bioware will do this. I don't think they will ever, for example, reveal wheter the Maker is real or not, nor in any other way bring "proof" that this or that particular entity exists.
However you are incorrect about one thing. The old gods can be given a greater role without bringing up the problem of "whose gods are the real gods", because the existance of the old gods have allready been proven.
We have seen Urthemiel for ourselves (well DAO players have at least) and we also know for a fact that there have been four Archdemons, in other words four old gods, before him. It is also revealed in David Gaider's The Calling that the highest ranked of the Grey Wardens knows the exact locations of the remaining Old gods who have not yet become Archdemons.
So whether they exist or not is not the issue. What we don't know for certain is; are they really gods? Or are they "simply" powerful dragons? And why do they call for the Darkspawn to seek them out when it only results in they themselves becoming corrupted?

I've been wondering about the old gods. The first 4 blights were separated by relativly short amounts of time (208 from first to second, 115 from second to third, 187 from third to fourth). Between the fourth and the fifth blight however, there is a pause of 410 years. And that with the accidental kick-start that the Architect delivered. What if the darkspawn already discovered another old god in this time, but it managed to free itself? Just a wild guess, but i could have interesting possibilities regarding Flemeth, Morrigan, the God child and the Wardens.
So many darkspawn are slaughtered in the fourth Blight that it is
considered certain that they will never return. This belief is
compounded by rulers choosing to tell the people that the Blight was
forever defeated as a way to restore order. Despite the fact that the
surface world would not see another Blight for 400 years it is
continuously felt underground by the dwarves of Orzammar, a fact that is
largely ignored by most except the Grey Wardens.

I belive that is your answer.
