I am one of these folks who like to do things mostly in the order they come up so after the deep roads I picked up Sebastian and headed out to do his main quest. Hawke is a SS warrior who is currently dragging Merril and Fenris along and lo and behold once we enter what I assume is going to be the major portion of Sebastians quest it appears he will have pretty much zero chance to be of any use in opening any of the locked chests in this area.

I'm not sure I understand the thinking behind this design feature. Did they really expect people would bring along a second rogue for this purpose or that everyone would consider the locked chests as meaningless fluff anyway or was there some reason that giving him a score that would have allowed him to get to the third level of lock picking once he leveled up once instead of barely making it into the second level that would have somehow overpowered his build?

Oh wait I know - they obviously wanted to give folks the opportunity to use the  "cheat" potions they so cunningly supplied...(an option I find just about as annoying as the underlying need to do so)

How much cunning did Sebastian have? You do know that lockpicking and disarming traps is based on cunning right? The levels are 10/20/30/40 respectively for each level of chests. 10 for simple all the way up to 40 for master locked chests. If you have an item that grants bonus to lockpicking it will grant you what is equivalent to 50% more cunning to unlock the next higher level. 27 cunning with an item that grants that bonus will allow you to unlock any chest in the game.

"Hawke is a SS warrior"

Haha.

Why not have a second Rogue with you, as soon as I picked up Seb' it was obvious his lockpicking wasn't up to scratch, so it was either that or wait out.

As I recall he has less than 20 when he becomes available (19 I think) he leveled once before we entered the Harriman estate so he now has 22 and all the locked chests in that area were complex (requiring 30+).

All the companion rogues start out with under 20 cunning. Which means they all fail at picking most locks unless you invest in that stat. Isabela fares slightly better because there are a few daggers with +lockpicking skill she can use. That gives +50% to their cunning score purely for the purposes of lockpicking.

Anyway just because you have Sebastian on his quest, it doesn't mean you can't bring another rogue as well. I had three in my party doing that quest (myself the third)

True enough; it wasn't an issue on my first rogue playthrough.  Still, since the game doesn't prompt you to look at Seb's attribute screen when he joins (just the abilities), it can be an annoying surprise.

While it may be true that a party with numerous rogues is viable I doubt it could be called the norm while I suspect that a party with a single rogue is very probably the most often used option with the possible exception of a party where Hawke is a rogue.

In the case if this run through Varric certainly started out with relatively low cunning as well but I had plenty of opportunity to raise him to be an excellent lockpicker while the only way I could get Sebastions cunning built up enough just to handle the locks in the Harriman estate I would have had to ignore this quest until he had been with the party long enough to level up 4 times - hardly a viable option.

They certainly could have arranged for a portion of his attributte scores as well as his abilities to be available to choose once he becomes available - my point is that barring using the "cheat" potions there is pretty much no way to make it happen and I don't really understand why they would choose to make him that way.

All three rogues had me almost exclusively pumping up their cunning stat until they could open every chest.

Well, with a party of four, you're going to have two rogues, mages, or warriors. (assuming you have at least one of each) Why would two rogues in the party be more unusual than either of the other options?

It wouldn't be insane at all to have two rogues in a party - one as an archer, one as a stabber. Same reasoning behind having two mages (one support, one damage) or two warriors (one tank, one damage). That said, the Maker's Sigh really isn't cheating so you may just have to get over yourself and respec him with more cunning. That's what I did.

The lockpicking requirements are annoying. It's not just a Sebastian problem... 40 cunning to open master locks? What? Now, people have mentioned items, and that's fine if you buy that really cheap act 1 dagger for Isabella... there is, however, no way in hell that I will spend 50-100g on a ring that Varric or Sebastian can use... that's way too much money for almost no payoff.

Basically, I just boost Varric to 40 Cunning before anything else, and always travel with him. That makes the game a little boring sometimes, and it's hard to keep him alive on occasion, but it gets easier with practice. Still, the requirements are just way too high... even 30 Cunning is too much, and it really gets in the way of building the characters the way you want to.

Ever stop to think about why they might have named that cheat potion Makers Sigh to begin with?

As in people are never satisfied with what they get and don't give a wit about why something might have been designed in a particular manner so we might as well just give them an easy cheat to do whatever they please anyway....(heavy sigh...)

I'm not saying it would be insane to have two rogues I'm simply saying that it's my opinion that two or more rogues in the party is probably not the most popular option out there and probably not what the majority of people are play (with the exception of those playing Hawke as a rogue perhaps altho thats not a given either)

I'm also saying that I don't understand WHY they decided to craft this DLC NPC in such a way that he CAN'T perform the only duty that only a rogue can do on his own quest lines (without being remade in some other manner) thus opening the door for someone in the know or even someone who thinks they know to pop in and say why we did it becuase of blah blah didee blah blah of course to enlighten me and perhaps thus assure me that it wasn't done fo the sole pupose of annoying the holy crap out of an old man like me.

Perhaps they wanted him to be a pious person by default who didn't want to go breaking into people's lockboxes, and only by the influence of Hawke does he decide to hone that particular skill.

There probably isn't much of an explanation, really, they probably just gave him stats that seemed important for an archer to be effective.
