If you come down to it, it's a rite of passage. Like Spartans or some modern day gangs who beat you within an inch of your life. If you don't survive.. well you weren't cool enough to join, obviously.
Thus you get arrogant self-entitled disco morons like Stroud.
And THAT is why I originally called the Wardens the second most idiotic organization in Thedas

Do we ever saw somebody get the taint by fighting darkspawn, besides our siblings? I mean other than getting wounded like Wesley or the militia in Awakening. The Taint seems to be awfully ineffectiv if you dont gulp down a massive amount of Darkspawn blood.
Dog in DAO and the people on the stretchers in Ostagar.
There were a few in Awakening too. That guy in the woods with Velana, and the other one you rescue from the Deep Roads. And reports of taint affecting those that Batman...er the Ambassador rescued.
In DA2 when you first arrive at the Gallows and that Merc group is bothering the guard captain, if you look closely at the other unhelmeted merc, he's suffering from early signs of it too.

Was that on purpose?
Because if it was, then given the month long trip time from Ferelden the blight has one hell of a random incubation period.

Or it was just scurvy

It clearly varies by person, exposure, and Plot Shield. Wesley was a wimp, so getting some blood on his shoes caused near immediate change. The Peasant in awakening went weeks without changing. Bethany/Carver was on the shorter end of it, but you were in the Deep Roads for weeks, and might have gotten some prior exposure in the intro.
Hawke of course goes swimming in Darkspawn blood and has no issues.

Stroud is a disgusting fool, and I hope he appears in DA3 so my Warden can fire his ass.

Yeah, can't spare 3 whole wardens to help a city they may need support from in the future when they were attacked first.

Well won't that be embarassing if their 'more important mission' was to find you...

Uhm.. Did it ever occur to you that he actually does have something far more important to do? Like he... says..The Angry One wrote...

He is acting like a Grey Warden should. A Grey Warden brings any sacrifice neccesary to finish the job. Kirkwall was obviously of less importance to the Wardens than his current assignment. I hope he shows up, so I can pat him on the back, and complain about that bunch of whiny Grey Wardens to have entered the ranks of late.

The Warden isn't missing at that point. At least, mine isn't.

Whatever it was could spare 3 whole Wardens to save some lives.
Especially considering we hear nothing about this "important mission" ever.
