Though his style in bringing this to the public may leave to desire, ehye's statements about the proper selection of a server OS are true. If you don't have at least windows server 2008 at your disposal (or 2003), than you should use linux or bsd for any publicly available server. You as the server admin are responsible for the nonsense or even criminal things anybody does with your server if he can hijack it. I would not take that risk. Linux is not only more secure out of the box, it is much easier to do admin jobs on.

Just my 2¢

Greetings

After reading the posts on this topic, I sat down and
started thinking about all the times someone ever asked me for advice and then ignored
it. I understand that from a technical standpoint linux is a better system to
run a NWN server than windows. However, I also understand that from a builder’s
aspect switching from windows to linux would involve more than most people are
willing to deal with. From what I gathered the majority (if not all) of the
admins of said group all use windows where ehye only uses linux. I can
understand where the conflict comes in over difference of opinion, on the other
hand, I can see where reinstalling an operating system and then having to rebuild
a mod would not be a well-liked option either. I am going to school to become
an IT. Personally I wouldn’t want to only learn one operating system as I feel doing
so would limit my abilities as a IT Tech. granted I am not a great scripter as I
am still learning, but I think if I had been in the situation I would have
offered my best advice first. If that had not been a suitable solution then I would
have realized I gave it my best and if I had been removed, I would not have
held a grudge. It comes down to personal preference of how people like to do their
own thing.

I once had a pair of DM’s who were helping to add to the
former server I was running. At one point, the quest system we were using broke,
and would not allow anyone with a sub race to take quests. I wanted to solve
that issue first; they wanted to add more quests. When I refused to allow them
to add more quests, they both quit on me and went and built their own server.
They wanted me to allow them to hold a DM position until a couple days later, I
promptly removed them as DM’s as I felt they resigned and needed no time to
continue to badmouth me on my own server. Their decision to “take their ball
and play over here” was their choice. When they resigned, it was my choice to
remove them as DM’s promptly.  Was either
choice right? Maybe, maybe not but the fact that this game allows us each to
make our own choices is IMHO what makes this game so great. We all get our own
choice when it comes to making our own PW or MOD.

This outburst of OTT virtiol and histrionics is a perfect example of why I've choosen to not become involved in any PW team since 2003.

There's always one wing-nut that blows things way out of proportion and destroys the collaborative process for others.

I've always found it funny when someone acts hostile while at the same time seeks approval and acceptance from those it's directed at. If you really don't care dude, you wouldn't be posting.

And... why hasn't this been locked down yet?

The issues being discussed among the server admins affect both Windows and Linux servers. While Linux offers some additional options, there are some methods of attack the griefers use that either group of OS are equally vulnerable to.

One individual's choice to bring up the issue here and his posts on that subject make it fairly evident why he was removed.

Just wondering are these like players that grief others or are they attacks being referred too more like, just methods to bring a server down, or perhaps a combination of both?
Personally I sort of understand the fromer, griefing other players, at least the childish mentality, but just to mess up a server with malicious code or dos attacks, or whatever just seems, well rather ignornant.
Ok I think I get it, it's the latter, just attacking the servers to bring them down. Jerks just being Jerks.

To the clear-headed and descent FEW who have sent words in support THANK YOU - I want all involved to know I have recieved the best wishes of others who, like me find the actions and words of most of these supposedly mature and sociable operators of (windows based) nwn servers. This is one such example-

"Heya Ehye

Just wanted to say sorry for the abuse you got on the forums about your being booted.. I wish I could be ballsy enough to post in public defending you, but then we both know I will get ripped apart too...

I agree with your linux statment, I myself am running XP for my server and I wish I knew how to set-up a linux box...but just dont know how.

anyways. stay strong."

my reply;

"Thank you FRIEND NAME WITHHELD. I will be the first to admit this is the first time I've ever been 'thrown out of the country club' for being the wrong OS. I will also state for the record, I've never met a worse bunch of toads in need of parental supervision in my life either. The lot of them should be ashamed of themselves. Thank you for your words of support.

Be well. Game on.

You overinflate your own importance in this case. I in no way desire your approval, rather I want you all to understand I was evicted for no better reason than 'It all was really a popularity contest with no rules published'. The whole hosted by an immature person with the power and desire to ban all who did not fit the secret rules.

May you all continue to enjoy being part of that oh-so-select group. I'll enjoy NOT BEING PART OF SUCH A FARCICAL AND CLOSED MINDED TROUPE. *waves*

Have fun with the hackers.

Be well. Game on.

Yes and it is indeed the same group that hit those servers back in 2005.

No biggie though as we have gotten a handle on it for the most part.

Server drama does not belong in our forums. Please take it elsewhere. Thank you.

End of line.
