Well, a preview of the first 15 minutes of Episode One has just hit the net. And it's awesome:)

(SPOILERS WARNING)

I'm quite impressed by how they adapted the Prologue. It's just as creepy and downright frightening as it was when I first read the book. And I'm glad we don't get a full glimpse of the White Walkers ( I also aprrove of the name change, Others sounds too much like Lost), makes them even more chilling.  Also liked how they conveyed how massive the scale of the Wall is. It looks breathtaking.

Cut to Winterfell, another winner in my eyes. The place looks dreary , and befits the grim nature of the North. Despite that, there is warmth to be found among the Stark family. All of them look and act superbly, particularly Sean Bean as Eddard. I know a few minutes is not much of measuring to how good an actor's performance is, but Bean looks and sounds natural in the role as if it were made for him.

So color me very impressed by how HBO has adapted the first few pages of George RR Martin's novel. If the quality of the remaining episode and succeeding ones match or surpass, we're in for a treat. A Song of Ice and Fire looks to be great.

If George Martin ever finishes the series, it has a good shot at being the best fantasy series ever. I've enjoyed them so far.

I have a friend that loves the books. But he says that all the characters you like die...quickly. Like they'll be introduced, you'll like em, then bam! They're dead.

Except Tyrion... He's still alive and kicking. And I don't believe Brienne dies, she cries out because she sees someone coming to save her...

Just finished my 3rd readthrough of the first book. It is probably my favorite series ever. It is without a doubt an emotional roller coaster. The last 1/3 of that first book has me crying the whole way. I'm not sure if I like the look of the actor cast as Robb, but I'll see how he does with the character. They did take some liberties with the ages of some of the characters, I noticed. Jon Snow (Kit Harrington?) is perfect, as is Sean Bean (he is ALWAYS perfect).

edit - @ Maria - Tyrion is one of my fav's. I love his character!!! I think Jon Snow and Arya are the other ones I really enjoy.

@ Cats I am a woman of contradictions, I either like them big and funny, or small and clever but always ballsy (size doesn't matter for that)!

Having watched an extended excerpt this morning, I was greatly impressed. I've never read the books, but I can see myself easily enjoying this regardless. I've always liked fantasy, and this looks great.

Good stuff!

This looks great!

The Others look a bit more Predator-ish than I imagined (I always thought them more Nazgul like for some reason) but it looks like a fine adaptation.

Agree. But they're fine even in this tribalish version.

My only squabble with how they translated the prologue is that Ser Rymar Royce is not as arrogant and unsufferable as he should be. I'd have liked to see the White Walkers battle him.

Arya, Bran and Jon were all great. I know: Arya hasn't any line in this preview, but this only makes her performance even more great. She's just perfect for the role.

Now I can't wait to see Daenerys and Vyseris. What can I say? I'm a Targaryen fan :innocent:

Only thing I disliked was the Others. Aren't they creatures of another race? From that preview, it seems they're a bunch of crazed hillbillies out of Deliverance.

I already made a topic about this, god dammit! <_< But yeah, the preview was awesome. A lot of the more hardcore fans are already freaking out about the little, inconsequiential changes, but the series will definitely dothe book justice.

Oh, you should. There are five books in total(I count the fifth one because it's almost out) and they are all really good(excluding the fifth since it's not out yet). It's a pity that GRRM is a slow writer. He really is turning a lot of the fans off because of how much time his books take to get published, and it's only made worse by the fact that A Feast for Crows was only half a book and full of cliffhangers.

As a fan, I'd have to say yes and no. Georgie boy kills off mainly the non-POV characters(the exception being a certain character from the beginning of the series). The prologue characters always die, but they're pretty insignificant compared to everyone else. The rest of the POV characters are fine.

She must have shouted, "Sword!" because at the last moment, she was looking at Podrick and she probably wanted to break her oath to save him. Also, GRRM doesn't kill off characters without purpose.

believe those were just wrights, and wrights are merely dead zombie men controlled by the actual Others.  So, I think it makes sense that they look like hillbillies because that's pretty much what wildings are

I've always intended to read the books but I hate reading a series of books without it already being finished. This show looks interesting though :D

I saw that the ebooks were available for my Nook Color so I went ahead & bought all four that are out.  I started reading the first in the series today & I was impressed at how the snippet of the series closely matched.

To use the TV looks: [prologue spoilers, obviously]
Dark (in the books: white and shimmering, like ice) monsters with deep blue glowing eyes and thin swords, i.e. the only ones who actually kill in the TV version of the prologue: Others a.k.a. White Walkers

Reanimated corpses with faintly glowing blue eyes (and at least in the books black hands and feet), i.e. the creepy girl: Wights

I'm hoping theres an extended scene to that one, I thought the kid who played Royce had that perfect condescending arrogance to him, and it was a nice touch he had his plush sable coat while the others were in rags like in the novel. My only dissapointment - if you can call it that - is how much of what happened was off-camera, I second the want to see statement.

This show is going to be amazing though, and Dinklage will end up winning an award. The character of Tyrion is just too well written and is begging to enter pop-culture.

It looks like HBO's best yet, even moreso than Six Feet Under or Carnivale.

I highly doubt that it will beat The Wire for me.  That show was simply amazing.

I also wish that the prologue scene was longer.  Hopefully they will have an extended version available on the season 1 DVD.  I think that is probably the only reason why I would buy it, and I think it would make a great deal of sense for HBO to increase dvd sales.  Of course, I am just assuming that there are cut scenes available.

Indeed. I'm glad that they didn't turn this into a movie for Hollywood to ruin, and I'm glad that the author is also working on the series(he screenplayed the last episode).

Well... Hollywood is still making it. It's a TV show, after all.
