I think you're misunderstanding. Those of us who have read the books saw this because we know what happens down the line. While I was reading, I was totally shocked by Theon's betrayal, too. I think the TV show gave you more clue because you actually see him in Pyke burning his letter to Robb. What did you think he was going to do at that point?Gibb_Shepard wrote...
No, i'm sorry, but the fact that you could pick up an underlying resentment from a couple short, vague scenes is really something only one who has read the books can do. You know who he is, and will be far more sensitive to scenes where he may act vaguely (Extremely vaguely) like his later self. For someone who hasn't read the books, Theon's character portrayal was done terribly. Nothing in the first season could lead one to believe that he resents the Starks; except if you've read the books of course.

Yeah but they're peasant children, no one cares about them.

I'm sure they died of natural causes. In the dark ages most kids didn't make it to 10 years old.Addai67 wrote...

I thought there was too much sexual tension with Snow and the Wildling it was getting boring and repetitive.
But I have to say that this is the first time I sympathized with Cersei. Finally her potential as a character is starting to be revealed, imo.
Tywin was awesome as usual and though this whole Arya being his cup bearer never happened in the books, I'm glad they did it in the show.

Well... didn't Cat warn him about the promise she made to that dirty 'ol Lord at the castle about him marrying one of his daughters? It's already explicitly set up as a big warning sign flashing: do not penetrate!bobobo878 wrote...

Although that smile she gave him right after delivering a massive ****block (in the last episode) was great.

I'm pretty sure that it did happen in the books, except that there was more of a buildup. Arya started at the bottom and worked her way up.
And in the books those kids did not die from natural causes.

Arya did end up as Bolton's cup bearer, not Tywin.
I'm not sure where they're going with Arya on the show but I'll be a bit disappointed if we don't get to see the Leech Lord in action, so to speak. Thats one of the great thing about so many of the characters in A Song of Ice and Fire, they all have their little idiosyncracies, whether via character traits or physically or nicknames that make even the minor characters memorable.

You're lead to believe they're dead but you eventually find out they're alive. Brock was just trying to keep the mystery alive for you.

Theon WANTED to kill them. He just took someone else when he failed to find them, because it would shame him to admit his failure, and he wanted a message.

THe storylines for the show are not going to follow the books. I am not saying that will never showed up but there is a reworking of the books to fit the show.

In other words. Several minor characters won't be in. Some keyplots reworked.
All in all though I think the basics of the books will be left. As in key happenings. While say some of the issues such as the King of Qarth deal. But major things such as Ned being and staying dead, and some other events surrounding Joff and the starks I suspect will happen more or less just like in the books.

Well yes. Some will disappear and others might appear sooner or later then they did in the novels. Some ploits put forth by the minor characters will be rolled into the major characters.
It is something to be expected from a transition from novel to live action or whatever the proper term is.
I am all for thirty episode one hour each season to cover everything. Like with the LoTR movies they each could of been 3 hours longer and I would still want more. But there is always that break and I think they have done very well.
Oh, and I know its not coming this season but I looked forward to the Arya and The Hound.

As long as nothing major happens like say the Red wedding not happening some people who are needed in the book dying before hand. Or like Ned coming to life, then I'm fine with little canon slips.
Its major stuff being changed that would bother me.

Yes, this. I think we've gotten away from the fact that this was intended as a non-spoiler thread, for the show only. There is a separate book thread here: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/13/index/7744823 . I think it would be best if those of us who have read the books try to keep from discussing specific book information.

You're 100% right. Those of us who've read the books do have additional information, and honestly, subtlety is lost on the TV show. I don't think anyone just watching would pick up Theon's resentment. If they did, I doubt they would realize it was as deep as it seems. But then, the show portrays him as wanting to help Robb even after returning to Pyke (the letter he burned, for one thing) while the book shows him pretty much embracing the Iron Way.
Yet another reason the series is bothering me. So many missing scenes, or things just brushed over, is losing a lot.

On the other side... I didn't like the change on Jaime. I don't consider it in character. He did what he did to Bran to protect his own kids. You could argue that he was doing the same there, but it's not as clear cut.
