Kinda funny how much trouble Theon Greyjoy and Jon Snow have been getting in for thinking with their dicks lately. If this pattern keeps repeating, Robb Stark had best stay away from that doctor lady.

Well... didn't Cat warn him about the promise she made to that dirty 'ol Lord at the castle about him marrying one of his daughters? It's already explicitly set up as a big warning sign flashing: do not penetrate!

"Sorry Robb, you can't  marry the cute doctor lady, I already promised you to the daughter of that toll bridge keeper so he'd let us cross."

lol I always thought that was funny. I mean the guy was a creep. No way in hell I'ld make any deals with him. Bridge or No bridge.

Don't know why but every episode without Stannis, I end up missing Stannis. He makes everything more interesting... I don't know how much longer I can wait for Episode 9: Blackwater

With the recent episode: I don't understand the motivations of xaro xhoan daxos (apparently he's the richest man in Qarth in case you missed the 100 times he said it) and the warlock from the house of the undying.. They kept saying how Dany had to be with her Dragons or something like they were allying with her? But she ran away in fear or something? I dont know might be cause i was tired but that scene made little sense to me.. Please don't give Dany another reason to exhaust another lot of lines about fire, blood and her birthright... All her lines seem the same to me lately: Annoying

Yeah... They (kind of) explain his motivations in the episode. But basically Theon was trying to save his own ass, I guess. But in doing so it seems he's signed his death warrant.

Even having read all the books, I'm still not certain why Theon became a turncloak. I don't think GRRM did a very good job of getting that "inner struggle" concept across. It seemed to come out of nowhere in A Clash of Kings.

Yeah, once again.. having read all the books I don't understand Xaro's motivations either. I think that is on purpose though. He's almost like Varys in the way that we can't really tell what he wants (from what I recall).

Great, I thought I was desensitised after reading the books a while ago. But this morning I had really vivid dreams of a few "What if..." situations and the emotional sides of some characters and I'm an emotional wreck again. I hate and love old Grr.

I do love the scenes between Arya and Tywin (two of my favourite characters) but they completely mischaracterise them and destroy their future character growth.

But really, looking at the other changes, (EDIT: E.g. Cersei. Seriously, what the actual ****?) I just can't be bothered to care anymore.

Good thing he's in good health(as far as I know).

Dude's over 60, he needs to finish these books up.

Am I the only one that's okay with the changes?

I've read the books before. I'm rereading them now. Got through A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, and just started rereading A Storm of Swords.

I'm alright with them switching stuff up. Keeps things interesting for book readers.

Sure, I'll point out when things differ from the books, but I look at the show as an adaptation of the novels, not a direct paper to television screen copy.

I doubt you are alone. Speaking for myself, I stopped caring about the changes prior to this season's premiere. With the exception of Melisandre and Stannis knocking boots, none of them rankled me for an extended period.

My real issue with the changes is they are uncompelling. I no longer bother to watch GoT every Sunday. I still haven't seen last week's episode. Hence my participation in this thread has dropped into an abyss. Some changes have been good. Others border on soap opera drama. Very few are altogether interesting. I haven't dropped GoT yet, but it's doing a poor job of holding my attention.

Really, that's all that matters in the end. Is it entertaining? Am I having fun? It's starting to feel like I'm watching the show out of duty. Like, I loved the books so I should give the program every chance to keep me interested. That only goes so far.

Damn. I still love the show. Compelling characters keep me compelled.

Plus, my mom bugs the hell out of me about what happens next.

She wants spoilers sometimes, since I've read the books and she's only part way through A Game of Thrones.

Its fun teasing her.

They cease to be compelling when changes alter characterization in uninteresting ways. The only altered character catching my eye currently is Tywin. I thought he was vile scum in the novels. Here I almost see him as a human being. Other than that, lots of mehness IMO.

I see the characters for who they are in the show, without really comparing them to how they were in the books.

I try to watch the show as someone who hasn't read the books, with the occasional slip as I know what's coming or I recognize a character when they're introduced.

Works for me. For example, in the last episode. The interaction between Tywin and Arya. I love love loved that(I know you haven't watched it yet, but perhaps when you do you'll know what I mean).

I like not involving the books very much when it comes to my perception of the show, though sometimes it just has to interfere-

My mom's two favorite characters are Robb and Catelyn Stark.

She's gonna react to A Storm of Swords(Season 3-4).

I'm gonna giggle like a little school girl.

That doesn't help, though. As I wrote before, some of the changes border on soap opera drama. They would seem bad to me even if I never touched the novels. Rob and Talisa's interaction for example, or practically everything going on with Dany at the moment.

It isn't that I dislike the changes because they are changes. It's because the end result is trite. There's no getting around that.

Hmm. Well, it can't win everyone over.

Though it seems to me they are TRYING to make Dany sound annoying.

Perhaps trying to remind us that she's still a young girl with a troubled past.

The worst thing about Dany is that she was my favorite character in the books, now I am slowly starting to dislike her.

As for reminding us...you mean just like they "reminded" us that Joffrey is an **** because of what he did with the ****s?

Yeah. Thing is, I don't mind that. Reason being that my mom and stepdad react in a certain way to it, and I feed off their emotions as far as the show goes.

If it makes them like or dislike a character more, it makes me happy to see the show is creating more of a reaction in a viewer.

I find myself constantly asking them whether they like or dislike a character, what their opinions of them are, and we discuss the motivations and background of the characters in the program, me providing more insight as I've read the novels.

I'm fine with them for the most part. The only thing they really need to do is introduce the Reed children as they're pretty essential in the future so I expect to see them in season 3.

But for the most part I understand the changes that have been made and am trying to enjoy the series as it's own seprate entity to the books.

Its just really good, having someone there like my stepdad to break down the series with.

He hasn't read the books(likely never will) but he's VERY good at discussing the characters, their motives, what makes them who they are, how awesome or not awesome they are, etc etc.

The company's nice.

No, I watch the TV show as a depiction of my favorite books.  The scenes where they are off-book I almost always either dislike or am indifferent to because it doesn't seem real.  I'll still watch the show, but the further they get away from GRRM's material the less interest or excitement I have.

LPPrince: Something done purely for sensationalism or shock value is I feel pissing on everything Song of Ice and Fire is, and that's how I view the scene with Joffrey.

No one who had watched the show until that point needed to be told that Joffrey was an ****.

Addai: I seriously hope that whatever they do they do not **** up Blackwater. The ONE THING they've done right so far is Tyrion. I'm going to curse quite loudly if they **** him up.

Same, I always liked her in the books, but she's got her entitled princess going pretty strong in recent episodes.  Maybe they'll reward us by cutting out Daario.  Now that would be a change I'd applaud.

Just because it isn't necessary doesn't mean it shouldn't be done.

What that scene did was make Joffrey look even worse- evoking a stronger response for those who are blind to the books.

A good thing, in my opinion.

Why? Why should that scene be in GoT? What to treat TV viewers who haven't read the books like dumb idiots who needs to be told constantly: Joffrey is evil?! Because that's how I feel.

I felt nothing watching that scene except anger at HBO for including it.

I haven't read Dance of Dragons, so I can't comment on him there, but I didn't think he was a bad character.

As for show Dany. The one thing I do kinda like are the scenes between her and Jorah Mormont. This does sound stupid but I do hope in the end Danny and Jorah end up together.

It certainly is like that in the novel, at least.
