There were also a couple of moving scenes. Three characters I've sort of disliked had good moments- Ros, Talisa and Asha/ Yara.

Bran and Rickon
Like with Bran and Rickon's fake death. Comparing it to the book, it suffers since they seemingly clearly wanted the audience to think they were actually dead up until they revealed they were hiding in the crypts at the end of this episode. Not having Reek hurts in that the deception with killing the kids played out different, and I guess necessitated the need to show Rickon and company cracking nuts out on the road. Whereas, in the books, its left a mystery where Bran and Rickon actually are until the very end. So even if you suspected they were alive, which the books tells you before the end, you weren't sure where. And that sort of worked better in conjunction with the last scene in the book.
No Chain?
Eh, I guess they could toss it in still next episode but at this point its not the cool mystery anymore like it was in the books that had some buildup. Introducing it now will make it seem like its out of nowhere or just some natural defense of King's Landing. Seems they're making Blackwater focus on the Mud Gate and wildfire and not as much the Chain and naval battle, which would be very disappointing. But GRRM wrote Blackwater so hopefully he does it right.
Jon and Qhorin
Easily my biggest complaint is how they've truly ****ed up Jon's storyline. I really don't know why they made the changes that they made. Its far less dramatic or exciting than it was in the books. Hell, the storyline from the books not only really adds to Jon's development as a leader but doesn't make him look like a clueless idiot. Same with Qhorin. They've contradicted themselves already there. When the Night's Watch capture Ygritte initially and kill the other Wildlings she's with, she says that if the Wildlings captured Qhorin, they'd kill him straight up. And yet, they've apparently captured him and are doing what with him? Why are they keeping him alive?
Its just really dumb and marginalizes the characters of Qhorin and Jon. In the books, Jon decisively lets go of Ygritte. Its not some wishy washy thing. And then he has probably his most important conversation with Qhorin explaining why he let her go and explains his rationale.
That conversation is pretty key IMO to his development as a leader and what he ends up taking away from his time with Qhorin and adds in more building up of Mance and later events with Jon in a way that doesn't have to bludgeon you over the head. Of course, we didn't get Ygritte's story of Bael the Bard either. I know no book spoilers so look away if you don't want to see quality character development:
Jon watched the ranger for a few moments, then summoned his courage and went to him. "My lord," he said, "you never asked me how it went. With the girl."
"I am no lord, Jon Snow." Qhorin slid the stone smoothly along the steel with his two fingered hand.
"She told me Mance would take me, if I ran with her."
" She told you true."
"She even claimed we were kin. She told me a story..."
"... of Bael the Bard and the rose of Winterfell. So Stonesnake told me. It happens I know the song. Mance would sing it of old, when he came back from a ranging. He had a passion for wildling music. Aye, and for their women as well."
"You knew him?"
"We all knew him." His voice was sad.
They were friends as well as brothers, Jon realized, and now they are sworn foes. "Why did he desert?"
"For a wench, some say. For a crown, others would have it." Qhorin tested the edge of his sword with the ball of his thumb. "He liked women, Mance did, and he was not a man whose knees bent easily, thats true. But it was more than that. He loved the wild better than the Wall. It was in his blood. He was a wildling born, taken as a child when some raiders were put to the sword. When he left the Shadow Tower he was only going home, again."
"Was he a good ranger?"
"He was the best of us," said the Halfhand,"and the worst as well. Only fools like Thoren Smallwood despise the wildlings. They are as brave as we are, Jon. As strong, as quick, as clever. But they have no discipline. They name themselves the free folk, and each one thinks himself as good as a king and wiser than a maester. Mance was the same. He never learned how to obey."
"No more than me," said Jon quietly.
Qhorin's shrewd grey eyes seemed to see right through him. "So you let her go?" He did not sound the least surprised.
"You know?"
"Now. Tell me why you spared her."
It was hard to put into words. "My father never used a headsman. He said he owed it to men he killed to look into their eyes and hear their last words. And when I looked into Ygritte's eyes, I..." Jon stared down at his hands helplessly. "I know she was an enemy, but there was no evil in her."
"No more than in the other two."
"It was their lives or ours," Jon said. "If they had seen us, if they had sounded that horn..."
"The wildlings would hunt us down and slay us, true enough."
"Stonesnake has the horn now, though, we took Ygritte's knife and axe. She's behind us, afoot, unarmed..."
"And like not to be a threat," Qhorin agreed. "If I had needed her dead, I would have left her with Ebben, or done the thing myself."
"Then why did you command it of me?"
"I did not command it. I told you to do what needed to be done, and left you to decide what that would be." Qhorin stood and slid his longsword back into its scabbard. "When I want a mountain scaled, I call on Stonesnake. Should I need to put an arrow through the eye of some foe across a windy battlefield, I summon Squire Dalbridge. Ebben can make any man give up his secrets. To lead men you must know them, Jon Snow. I know more of you now than I did this morning."
"And if I had slain her?" asked Jon.
"She would be dead, andI would know you better than I had before. But enough talk. You ought to be sleeping. We have leagues to go, and dangers to face. You will need your strength."
I guess they could still fit that sequence in, but I dunno. We lose substantial stuff like that for Ygritte making boner jokes? Eh...I like Ygritte but I question the decision making here.
Nevermind how the actual scenes in the book play out as an exciting chase plus a whole other element with Ghost which hasn't been touched on yet.
Arya
So thats how Arya gets out of Harrenhal? No Weasel Soup? Eh...I figured they'd end up changing this since they spent so much time with Tywin and never made Arya work her way to cupbearer. Guess that means no Leech Lord or Bloody Mummers. Or else they introduce them much later? Again, its a matter of timing and I'm not understanding some of the changes they're making especially with the timing of events.
Oona Chaplin
Robb and Talisa...eh, I won't lie, the sappy scenes may have been worth it for the hottest woman on the show to get naked. I can't blame Robb one bit.
Thats another thing the show could improve on- giving a better sense of place and scale to events geographically. Like, where is Robb supposed to be right now? Is he in the Westerlands conquering deep into Lannister territory? Cause the set they're using looks like the same one from season 1, which was in the Riverrlands, I think? Same with Blackwater, since so much of that battle is dependent on who is located where and what direction ships are coming and going from and where different armies are in relation to each other and where they're coming from.
Fist of the First Men
What in the world happened to Sam's teeth!?!? Its like he borrowed the teeth from Dragon Age Origins or something? They weren't always brown were they!? I was hoping the First Men left some Listerine and toothpaste under that rock.
Cat and freeing Jaime?
Kind of iffy on Cat's rationale for freeing Jaime. In the books, its primarily the fact that she learns of Bran and Rickon's deaths which sets her off to free Jaime. I get the urgency of doing it to keep Jaime alive and not murdered by the Kastarks but it doesn't add up. If they can get a rider out to Robb that quickly to tell him Jaime escaped, why couldn't Cat get a rider out to Robb to have him get his men in order to not kill Jaime? Again, it seems like forced drama when what the book had works just as well, if not better.
- I did like Yara/Theon's scene this week. I think they took most of that straight from the book, right down to Asha/Yara sitting with her feet on the table.
- The sense of distance and travel is all wacky on the show. So Littlefinger can magically teleport from King's Landing to the Stormlands and back up to Harrenhal in a couple episodes time and yet Stannis seems to have been perpetually a couple days away from King's Landing for a while?
- Jaime and Brienne!<3
- A Kevan Lannister sighting!
- Jorah name dropping Astapor!
- They really need some new wigs or something for Cersei and Dany. It always amazes me how much better looking they are in real life without those frumpy wigs.
- Stannis' deadpan delivery was great.
- Bronn, Tyrion and Varys are fantastic but that goes without saying.
- Evil, smiling, half drunk Cersei is the best Cersei.
- Where in the world is Ghost?

The look on Roose's face whenever he sees Talisa and Robb? Hmm.. wonder what's going on there. I agree that Talisa is the best looking girl on the show by far. (Let's wait until Val to see if she wins the contest.) The tent scene was a good one. Even though her arc is vastly different from the book, I still feel like they're doing a decent job at it. They did not "butcher" her, just transformed her character into something different. At first it annoyed me me, but you have to agree it makes a bit more sense how the whole thing ends up.
The changes in this episode didn't bother me.. The tidal wave of unfavorable reviews don't begin until the 4th book, but it's important to remember that the first few books were not perfect either. Some changes have been for the worst.. but I think it's important not to automatically disapprove of something just because they have altered it from the original.
There wasn't much "action" in this episode. But there was some great dialog. I thought that was what people watched the show for? The character interaction that is.. Anyway. I knew there wouldn't be fire and brimstone in this episode. It is literally the calm before the storm.
On a side note, I'm excited as hell to see Mance Rayder. I'm not sure if he has been casted yet, but he better be a badass.

Not much of Jon Snow, I wish he'd actually do something badass instead of failing all the time.
Hope Robb Stark's intent of breaking that deal doesn't come back to screw him or his army over. And quite the dick move by his mother.

[*]I noticed this as well. It looks like he's been chewing on sugar cane for a month straight.
[*]Episode was a tad boring, but Varys and Stannis made up for it. Jaime's scene was good too. Way too little Tywin, however.
