I'm looking at those actors/actresses, and the only one really standing out as not fitting a mental image is Shagga.

I think they did a pretty good job overall with the casting on this.

Also, I hadn't heard Hot Pie was going to be in Season 1 . . . here's hoping they don't truncate book 1 too much.

Seeing as how Hot Pie was in King's Landing during the first book anyways, it isn't much of a stretch for me for him to be in season 1 in at least a small capacity.

In regards to the person commenting on "decade long winters", no one alive has ever seen a winter that long. They repeatedly go over in the first book how most of the time the summers and winters are comparable in length, and that for the most part, winters have only been about 2 or 3 years in length for those that have experienced them. There is even a kind of religious belief that one day there will be a summer that will never end. That is where the drama comes into play, at least in the nature department, in the books. The current summer has been going on for over a decade from what I remember, most people are assuming summer is finally going to be never-ending, and damn near no one is taking seriously the whole "Winter is Coming" point of view.

Oh, and yes, they also mention in the books that crops and meat are stockpiled and preserved like crazy for the winters, but as already stated, people have grown lax during the extraordinarily long summer.

I think it's amusing that the idiot NY Times reviewer also thought it was a global warming allegory. Wouldn't that be, uh, "summer is coming"? lol

Anyone see the NYT review? Completely idiotic. "Durr fantasy is stupid so GoT is stupid! I want everything explained in the first episode and if there's any mystery as to character's motivations or why the world is the way it is its poop. Stupid books for boys"

At least it seems everyone else for the most part is in love with it.

And for the record, my sister loves the series as much as I do.

I saw the first episode and enjoyed it. Idiot officer who dies horribly within ten minutes, I salute thee. Also you can never have enough royal families with issues.

I never got around to reading the book series, a friend of mine who has thinks the author has written himself into a corner with a later books and can't bring too many separate plot-lines together. I wonder if he'll ever get them done.

Wasn't that the article that got a tremendous amount of backlash from the female ASoIaF fans?

It is pretty stupid honestly.

She got a negative one from me.  I was respectful, but really- get a clue, woman.  I basically told her that not only do women read sci fi/ fantasy, a lot of women have written it, since before the genres were called that.  BTW she gave a response to her critics that was even more vapid and clueless than the original review.  Dig the hole a little deeper there.

Episode 2! It's going to be a bit dicey to finish up Easter dinner with the in-laws in time to get home and watch. Sadly, HBO is not re-running this one at later hours, though I imagine it will replay next weekend. But can't wait a whole week!

Our DVR is already set to record it.

And apropos of nothing, as a general observation, episode one hit the internet very quickly indeed

We got our new TV set up in time for episode 1, but the TiVo has been extra assembly required.

Saw this last night, and it looked pretty cool. But then I looked up the plot on wikipedia, and the story went from a planned trilogy to 7 books books now, with only the first 4 complete.

Plus the plot looks like an endlessly meandering serial, with cliffhangers and plot threads that never get resolved.

...so I'll probably watch it.

Don´t worry too much. While A Feast of Crows felt a bit like filler, it´s not nearly as bad as Wheel of Time books 7 - 10.

I wonder, if the series gets that far, if they´ll adapt Feast of Crows and Dance with Dragons together.

What, Eddard wasn't actually his father?

He most likely is. But people have been obsessed with Jon Snow being a Targaryen bastard.

Well yeah what I did think his mother was a Targaryen.

I see the story ending with him + Daenerys as rulers, but if they ended up finding out they're related, that would be an interesting twist.

Has episode 2 already aired on the East Coast?

Another good episode. Some minor changes.

I wish they wouldn't keep hitting us over the head with the whole "Lannisters are up to something" angle. Or at least keep the characters a bit more in the dark.

PS - count me firmly in the "Lyanna is Jon's mother" camp.

I really hope they don't make Lyanna his mother, that is just wrong. My opinion of Ned will drop alot. I could understand taking your sister's kid and not wanting anyone to know who his father is (especially if it WAS Rhaegar) but to never tell your wife? To let her think you sullied your honor and betrayed her and then let Jon think he was your bastard love child all that time? That is just cruel. It would have saved Caitlyn and Jon alot of pain if Ned was just like "Honey, this is my sister's child, I don't know who his father is and I don't want anyone else to know he is hers because of the questions, but I can't abandon him." Think of how much kinder she would have been not seeing Jon as a daily reminder of betrayal, think of how much nicer Jon's life could have been.

I will be sorely disappointed if that particular fan-speculation is true.
