I think they did a pretty good job overall with the casting on this.
Also, I hadn't heard Hot Pie was going to be in Season 1 . . . here's hoping they don't truncate book 1 too much.

In regards to the person commenting on "decade long winters", no one alive has ever seen a winter that long. They repeatedly go over in the first book how most of the time the summers and winters are comparable in length, and that for the most part, winters have only been about 2 or 3 years in length for those that have experienced them. There is even a kind of religious belief that one day there will be a summer that will never end. That is where the drama comes into play, at least in the nature department, in the books. The current summer has been going on for over a decade from what I remember, most people are assuming summer is finally going to be never-ending, and damn near no one is taking seriously the whole "Winter is Coming" point of view.
Oh, and yes, they also mention in the books that crops and meat are stockpiled and preserved like crazy for the winters, but as already stated, people have grown lax during the extraordinarily long summer.

At least it seems everyone else for the most part is in love with it.
And for the record, my sister loves the series as much as I do.

I never got around to reading the book series, a friend of mine who has thinks the author has written himself into a corner with a later books and can't bring too many separate plot-lines together. I wonder if he'll ever get them done.

I think it's amusing that the idiot NY Times reviewer also thought it was a global warming allegory.

Anyone see the NYT review? Completely idiotic. "Durr fantasy is stupid so GoT is stupid! I want everything explained in the first episode and if there's any mystery as to character's motivations or why the world is the way it is its poop. Stupid books for boys"

Wasn't that the article that got a tremendous amount of backlash from the female ASoIaF fans?
It is pretty stupid honestly.

She got a negative one from me. I was respectful, but really- get a clue, woman. I basically told her that not only do women read sci fi/ fantasy, a lot of women have written it, since before the genres were called that. BTW she gave a response to her critics that was even more vapid and clueless than the original review. Dig the hole a little deeper there.Capt. Obvious wrote...

Plus the plot looks like an endlessly meandering serial, with cliffhangers and plot threads that never get resolved.
...so I'll probably watch it.

I wonder, if the series gets that far, if they´ll adapt Feast of Crows and Dance with Dragons together.

What, Eddard wasn't actually his father?
He most likely is. But people have been obsessed with Jon Snow being a Targaryen bastard.

I see the story ending with him + Daenerys as rulers, but if they ended up finding out they're related, that would be an interesting twist.

I wish they wouldn't keep hitting us over the head with the whole "Lannisters are up to something" angle. Or at least keep the characters a bit more in the dark.
PS - count me firmly in the "Lyanna is Jon's mother" camp.

I will be sorely disappointed if that particular fan-speculation is true.
