Had the privilege of seeing Martin recently at a convention. A marvelous personality, opinionated and smart. It was refreshing to hear his take on movies, TV, Vampires, and more. I'll get around to his books soon enough but I really have to hand it to this guy, resurrecting fantasy in this day and age.

No one else could write A Song of Ice and Fire like he can.

It's going to suck not watching my weekly episode for almost a year. I wish they made a few more episodes per season.

Still haven't watched any episodes :D but finished the third book.

On to A Feast for Crows now?

Yessir.

Though the second half of A Storm of Swords scared me a bit.

And Cersei is a POV in A Feast for Crows. Which.. I never cared for Cersei. She's my least favorite major character in the series so far.  Jaime as a POV did not build me much sympathy for him.

EDIT: There. I do not see any spoilers.

Disappointed with Theon. Too much emotion in the show, the guy looks like a man in perpetual conflict with himself, who wants to prove to the world that he is not nothing, while in the book, Theon seemed to care about nothing, always smiling for nothing, we do not know why, what I liked. With this kind of person, we never know what he is thinking about. And that's why, this bastard surprised me, when he decided to attack Winterfell.

Theon? Emotional? In the books he was just a horny bastard with a hint of entitled megolamania.

So Vol, tell us- what was your opinion on each individual novel?

/probably better suited for the Song of Ice and Fire thread

Watched the Blackwater episode again. Stannis deserves the Iron Throne for such incredible levels of badass. No arguments.

I don't care what anyone says, Stannis is without a doubt a badass.

You don't see today's Presidents pulling off what the kings of old did.

Yeah how is it that the puss of Joffrey wins and the badassery of Stannis looses ;/
Man how I wished Renly hadn't die ;( He would have crushed Stannis and Joffrey and take the Iron Throne alas fate is cruel.

Ehh, dunno about that.

Renly's FORCES could've done it, but Renly himself?

Sure he'd be more competent in battle than Joffrey(everyone is), but if Stannis met him in one on one combat, Stannis would win.

Of course, your forces have to look to you for leadership, so whatever his forces would've done would be attributed to him anyway(rightfully so).

Sure. Renly could've done it.

Too bad a Shadow Assassin would have none of it. /Dark Brotherhood contract lolololol

"Resurrecting"? Hardly.

Sure he is one of the best, probably THE best fantasy author what with the only competition, Tolkien, being dead, but he didnt resurrect the genre.

You cant resurrect something that's alive and prospering since years.

You obvioulsy never heard of Andrew Jackson, Ike,  or Theodore Roosevelt have you? Or in todays case Putin, Mugguibe (sp on that one) President Taylor. Though in fairness the US political picks the last few decades have all boiled down to, which craven liar looks the most nice.

But oh well your right on him being respectable in that reguard, bit of a Blood Knight.

Stannis would be a terrible king!  A shade better than Joffrey, maybe, but still terrible.  He wants to put everyone's head on a pike because they don't bow down to him now.  Could you imagine how much of the Seven Kingdom's would be dead because Stannis is so black and white?

Everyone that should be *puts on blood knight helmet* Life Death, doesn't matter so much as the ending

Speaking of if you read the books you'ld see that in this case no matter who win's lots of people are going to die. I'll be surprised if by the final book more than 50% of the general Population is left.

A royal thumbs up from the Prince of All Princes-

Oh yeah, heads up. One of the recipes is for Honey-Spiced Locusts.

I guess you can't knock it till you try it, but it says that if you can't get locusts, crickets work just as well.

That's uhh...goddamn it Dany.

Yet when it came down to it he did not slaughter the nobles who first bowed to Renly then bowed to him after Renly died. Certainly there would be death, but Littlefinger is exagerating. Though he would certainly kill a few nobles I doubt he would want Mace Tyrell's head for instance.

Agreed, he's a general at heart, with no charisma and little political skill. Plus, he is preaching a foreign religion without a really good social and political reason, without having the charisma to back it up (at least as shown in the show).

I would say though that Stannis would make a better king than Robert.

He is the same in the books in regards to religion. One of his qualities though he is that he appears to at least have a shred of meritocracy by making Davos his Hand.

Truth be told I would prefer a king like him over most who would seek to rule the realm. Even Dany. ( Just because I like her does not mean I want her on the throne. I won't complain if she takes it though ) though she does promote quite a few people because of their merits.

No, that's not true.  Stannis is a law n' order guy, but he's not overly ruthless.  Just look at how he treated Davos.  Stern to be sure, but fair.  He would be far from the worst as king.  The biggest argument against him is the one Varys makes, that he's made a pact with an old power he doesn't understand.

I wonder what Stannis would have done to Tyrion had he won at Blackwater. I believe he would have spared Tyrion ( and Lancel for that matter ) though he would have killed Cersei and Joffrey.

I dunno about that. Tyrion was responsible for burning his fleet. Pretty sure he'd be executed.
