I think either could be true, although cheating seems slightly less in his nature than perhaps lying to her about Jon. IIRC, he had not known Catelyn very long before he left for war, perhaps he didn't trust her with this secret.
It seems to have been common among the nobles for men to have bastards, but very few lived at court. In any case, there should be something special about Jon's mother, otherwise it will be disappointing after such a long delay in revealing who she was.

Even if at first he wasn't sure about Catelyn, after years of marriage and a bushel of children and seeing how much pain and discord it caused, telling her privately the truth and why would have eased alot of suffering and made his family life much easier for everyone. I just don't see him as such a fool to not have seen that for himself and so I think the odds of that being the case are very slim.

You heard Robert in ep 2, right? If there had been any suspicion, any at all, that Jon was a Targaryen, he would have been dead as dead. Plus if Jon really is Lyanna's, then she obviously made him promise not to tell anyone (her last words were "promise me, Ned.")SarEnyaDor wrote...
I'm not saying it is impossible, I'm just saying that if that is the case I wanna smack Ned around for being an idiot.

I'm pretty convinced that's who he is. But part of me wants it to be that way. Makes for a great story, beautiful and fracked up at the same time.
Ep 2... gack, seeing the direwolves makes it 10 x harder. Again, even though I knew what was coming, I was shouting at the screen.

Ned Stark is an idiot. Not a stupid one but an honorable one. In the books he repeatedly put his personal honor ahead of what the kingdom needs. He is in part responsible for the whole 5 kings war.

I like how Sandor just stands there with an indifferent facial expression. Good Hound!

In the books I'm in the part where Margaery and Joffrey get married. I heard it's gonna get nasty soon (not that I couldn't see it coming)

I was so mad at the end of last night's episode. That horrid woman demanding the execution of the dire wolf that did nothing wrong. That was very sad.
without revealing any spoilers, I would say that horrid woman will likely become even more despicable in your eyes as the series progresses, or if you read some of the novels.

Thanks, I haven't read the book, but am looking forward to the day when that family gets what they deserve (hopefully they do at some point).naughty99 wrote...

Yea, I kind of feel this way on the Jon issue as well, and I don't really care about who's kid he actually is.
Without getting too spoilery (for those who didn't read the books) Ned didn't know Catelyn all that well when they got married. He did know his sister, though (obviously). I can easily see him making a promise to his sister, and lying to his new wife - even if only by omission (which I'm petty sure is all he actually does) - to keep it.
And the issue is made a lot of for it not to be more than it seems.

Pushing a child out a window is one thing, but killing that dire-wolf is on a new level of scumbaggery entirely.

I really hope they don't make Lyanna his mother, that is just wrong. My opinion of Ned will drop alot. I could understand taking your sister's kid and not wanting anyone to know who his father is (especially if it WAS Rhaegar) but to never tell your wife? To let her think you sullied your honor and betrayed her and then let Jon think he was your bastard love child all that time? That is just cruel. It would have saved Caitlyn and Jon alot of pain if Ned was just like "Honey, this is my sister's child, I don't know who his father is and I don't want anyone else to know he is hers because of the questions, but I can't abandon him." Think of how much kinder she would have been not seeing Jon as a daily reminder of betrayal, think of how much nicer Jon's life could have been.
I will be sorely disappointed if that particular fan-speculation is true.
I think it's because Ned doesn't want the word to go out and also, Catelyn and Eddard just met at the time. Let's not forget that if information reaches Robert, he'd skin Jon alive. Also, Lyanna could have just wanted Ned to tell NOBODY at all. Including his wife. Since Ned is the paragon of honor, he'd stick to his promise.

Tyrion is such a badass- the cast in general is just superb, but I really, really think Viserys in the show is so much better than in the book. At least I thought in the book, Viserys comes across as entirely power hungry insane, whereas in the show he's still nutty, but its like a controlled craziness if you will
If you think about it, Viserys did have this "controlled craziness" at the beginning of the book, but as he got more impatient with Daenarys, he had to reach the boiling point eventually.

I completely agree - riveting, nuanced performance by Harry Lloyd brought something very special to this role.

LIKES
- Tyrion. Just from one particularly awesome scene and a few minutes of screentime, Peter Dinklage totally steals the show from everyone. I really can't wait for the rest of the series just to show what Dinklage can do with such a great part.
- Joffrey getting b***hslapped by Uncle Tyrion.
- Eddard. Man, Sean Bean owns as Ned. From his sad farewell to his bastard son, to his conversation with Robert that goes friendly reminiscing to tension filled argument regarding Daenerys, and finally the haunted anguish when he puts Lady out of her misery. It's the kind of performance that made me tear up nearly ten years ago when Sean played Boromir in LOTR.
- Jon Snow's farewells. Great scenes all around. I'm particularly fond of the scene with Robb. Despite the fact they can't refer to each other as such, there's no doubt these two are brothers.
- Catelyn. Props too should go the Michelle Fairley. She makes Cat's anguish over Bran totally believable, as is her motherly fury when she starts to suspect Bran's fall may not have been accidental. Ironic really, as I was never fond of Cat in the books.
- Daenerys. Finally, the princess is showing her stuff. Have to admit, that later bed scene with Drogo is a welcome addition.
- Arya. Wow. That utterly hateful look she gives to Joffrey had me s****ing in me pants. Despite her extended dialogue in this ep, Masie Williams totally nailed the part with that one look. Looking forward for more!
DISLIKE
- Joffrey and Sansa. Ugh. Take note that I'm not hating on Jack Gleeson or Sophie Turner, as I think they play their parts well. But the fact that they're good at their roles makes me hate them all the more, just like it was in the books. I do hope Sophie is able to make Sansa sympathetic later on, when things turn bad for her.
- No Ghost? C'mon, we got Summer, Lady and Nymeria. Why no love for the most prominent direwolf in the series? Hope when Jon gets to the Wall we see more of the albino direwolf.
