Anyone else feel that Daenerys is 'the' antagonist in all of this?

Perhaps long overdue, but am I the only one who thinks James Purefoy would make a great Euron "Crow's Eye" Greyjoy?

Maybe but I think her dragons are only for one reason, to burn all the white walkers

I have this nagging feeling that the story is gonna eventually devolve into Dany landing on Westeros, pressing the "I WIN" button, curbstomping every single army, including the white walkers with her dragons, and then sit on the iron throne and say U Mad? / Trollface. That would be sooo goddamn disappointing lol.

Why oh why must they insist upon ruining Littlefinger's character?
Telling Sansa he will help her get away? In person? When there is a Lannister guard keeping watch over her nearby?

She would have to clash with the others first in order to be their antagonist. I´m half-expecting her to win by being the only one left standing after everybody else kills each other before she arrives.

Politics, guts, war and fire.

When do we get to see Ygritte naked? xD

My boyish fantasies aside, I can understand how this episode may have been underwhelming, (apparently the ASOIAF site gave it a 7.7, and judging by the Internet's standards, that's average.) However, this episode (and the ones to come) are just setting the pieces for the **** to hit the fan.

I like how they're budget allows them to show us big armies, I've always loved that in LOTR.

As for Stannis... hmm. It's a tough subject really, Stannis would make a poor politician, the game is just not for him, but unlike Eddard, I think he knows it himself. He knows when he's loosing and he knows who to trust and who not to (bar Melisandre, but to be honest, I think it's made clear that she's the means to an end, aside from his nightly 'visits.')

I sometimes find myself puzzled as to why people follow him, and there are some very loyal men on his side apart from Davos. Partly, it's the Queen and Rh'llor, but even then loyalty can only do so much before you join the side that's winning. Right now, I think they have no choice, and that's why they stay. Later, however, we see Stannis will make some good moves, but then ****s it up by the end of Dance of Dragons, where once again, his men have absolutely NO choice in doing what he says unless they want death by ice or fire (oh-so-clever-moi.)

However, despite him being as charismatic as he's still no fool. Stannis knows his flaws, and that's what gives him that edge. He knows people don't like him, he knows people would prefer to be with the Tyrells, and so he uses that knowledge to aid him. This is why he values Davos so much. He might not be the image he needs, but he's the honesty he needs, and right now, telling Stannis it's 'going to be fine' is what he really doesn't need right now. He is broken, without an army and no lord in a hundred miles is going to bend the knee because he kissed a puppy and named her Queen's brother the hand of the King.

Edit: Anyone smiled at Shalador Saan's 'olive plate.' That detail always stuck with me. I was dissapointed when he didn't offer Davois anything to eat.

:D

Uh, no.  She's at least part of the "Fire" side of the mythical equation.  She's idealistic, so she does more harm than good sometimes, but she is learning.

For those who haven't heard, GRRM recently said:  "I know who will be sitting on the Iron Throne at the end, but a few will be sitting on it before then."  So whatever happens, it's not going to be as neat and tidy as Dany pressing an "I win" button.

Margaery may be on her way to becoming one of my favorite characters despite not having much of a noteworthy presence in the books when compared to her grandmother. She knows how to work a crowd.

I'm of the opinion that, with the whole "the dragon has three heads" thing, the series might be headed to a gender-inversed version of Aegon and his sisters, with Dany, Jon, and Stannis (all three having the requisite Targ blood if you buy into a certain theory).

[Massive spoilers for ADwD]
That's working off the assumption that Aegon is either Ilyrio's son or a Blackfyre. The "mummer's dragon" line from dream Quaithe gives me pause, although since Aegon and JonCon turned away from Meerreen it may not refer to them.

Dany and Jon starts feeling most likely and natural somewhere after the 1st book/season, sure. I recon GRRM makes sure this doesn't happen just because of it.

I'm thinking they might well combine Margs and her grandmother as one character.

I quite liked the season opener. Maybe its because its been a while since I read the books compared to last year, but I didn't even mind some of the changes. Things like Margaery visiting the orphanage didn't happen in the books, but its an easy way to communicate her whole schtick, what with trying to have the people on her side, which is in contrast to Cersei.

Other thoughts:
  • The Tywin scene with Tyrion was great. I think the dialogue there was mostly taken straight from the book. Quite a far cry from kind ol' Tywin that we saw interacting with Arya last year.
  • Dany's storyline in Astapor was great. Some of the CG they had with the dragons and the one shot of Astapor with the giant harpy statue was really nice looking. The slave master and Missandei were great too.
  • Really liked how they updated the title credits with Winterfell burned to the ground. That was a very cool touch.
  • I really liked Cersei this episode. Lena Heady did a nice job in her scene with Tyrion and especially with Joffrey and Margaery. You can see how pissed off Cersei already was with how goody goody Margaery was trying to act and how Cersei kept trying to shoot Margaery down only to get deflected. The line from Joffrey about Cersei getting old was great- you could tell that one stung her.
  • Liked Cersei's little line of dialogue about Tyrion losing his nose- nice little nod to the books.
  • Good to see Davos again, even if it seemed like they really sped up his story compared to the book.
  • The giant! Awesome! Reminded me a bit of the giants in Skyrim. All they need now are the mammoths!
  • A little disappointed in how Mace and Tormund weren't quite as colorful as their book versions. That's true with a lot of the characters in the show getting toned down. But I'll wait and see. It was a decent adaptation of the intro scene from the book, minus Mance showing off his bard skills and minus Val and Dalla.
  • The intro was ok but a bit disappointing. I get why they didn't show the actual battle but still, they could have done a better job establishing the fact that the Night's Watch barely survived and was just limping out of there and fleeing back in chaos. Good to see Ghost though.
  • Qyburn!
  • Just in general I liked the pacing of this episode compared to season 2's opener where they tried cramming in every character and every scene felt rushed as a result. Much smoother with how they did things and left Jaime/Brienne and Bran/Rickon for next episode.

Nope. He would be fantastic in that role. But he has a show on Fox now, so I doubt he'd be up for it. I can't wait to see Victarion and Euron. They should just get Ray Stevenson for Victarion and Purefoy for Euron.

Yep, so much this. Though I was reading Clash alongside Season 2, I still felt overwhelmed by how much was pushed along in comparison to Season 1.

I'm glad I've read all the books that same summer of Clash, all those little details won't bother me as much now.

I mentioned Dany's meeting with the Good Masters last night, but I should have brought up Tywin and Tyrion too. Both were exactly like how I imagined them.

Should also mention too that I think they managed to convey that Dany could understand what Kraznys was saying, like in book, through some of her quick facial reactions. So that was well done.

They're laying the foundation well for her AFFC storyline ... which if you think about it is Cersei basically suffering a mid-life crisis.

I wonder what they'll be doing with Davos since he spends half the book in a cell, and the other half just sort of sitting around Dragonstone with Stannis. Makes me think that, the TV show being what it is, they might try to expand the Dragonstone storyline from what it was.

Just saw the season premiere. Nothing special, but I really enjoyed it. Picked up where it ended last year quite well, and didn't try to cram in every character into the episode. Interesting to see Barristan Selmy again. Was actually wondering where he had gone too just a few days ago, never crossed my mind he would search for Dany.

Well this got me hungry for more, can't wait til Sunday.

So. Who do you think has the best house crest of the show?

I'm going with house targaryen, because dragons.

I'd say either Baratheon (default) or Lannister. I don't know, I just like their sigils.

On another note, WHERE'S MAH BELWAS?

It seems like they might have Mel meet up somehow with Thoros and basically substitute Gendry for Edric Storm. Beyond that though, I'm wondering how far they go with Stannis and Davos this season. I'm guessing probably dealing with Mel's influence on Dragonstone and maybe something with Shireen since they're introducing her and Stannis' wife this season. Have Mel do her thing with the blood and fire and then have Davos named Hand and learn how to read and maybe cut off as he reads about the Night's Watch.

I think I have a good idea of what things they're likely changing or modifying this season in their adaptation of the books and I guess that makes me a little more comfortable. So I'm not necessarily looking for or expecting certain things like the Bloody Mummers and so forth. They set up Bolton sending out Loche (Basically Vargo Hoat as a Bolton bannerman) to look for Jaime/Brienne, probably Gendry subbing for Edric Storm, showing what goes on at the Dreadfort and sort of doing the Reek thing from ACoK, bringing in Meera and Jojen, bringing in the Tullys and so forth.

The only thing I'm really not sure of is how they're going to handle Talisa as far as the RW. They've already sort of mangled Robb and Cat as characters but having Talisa show up to the RW with Robb as has been rumored would be pretty dumb. Unless another more far fetched rumor is true and that Talisa is a spy but that would be really goofy, IMO.
