Loved this episode.

I think I've said it before, but I think part of the reason why I'm enjoying this season way more than last is that its been a while since I read the books. So I'm not finding myself nitpicking every little difference and watching it more as just a TV show. I'll leave the nitpicking differences from book to screen to Westeros.org's reviews.

My thoughts:
  • Edmure screwing up. Great way to encapsulate Edmure in one scene- he's means well, but just is a bit of s a screw up. And a nice scene without anyone really saying a word.
  • Nice to see the Tullys and RIverrun. The Blackfish was superb casting.
  • The Small Council scene with the shuffling of chairs was brilliant. Littlefinger scurrying to sit next to Tywin, Varys just blending in, Pycelle content just to sit at the table, Cersei having none of that and sitting next to Tywin and Tyrion making a sham of it all and sitting opposite Tywin. Great stuff without a word said. Varys' facial expressions during that whole scene were hilarious.
  • Loved the Bolton men singing the Bear and the Maiden Fair
  • Liked the callback to season 1 with Arya asking the Hound when the last time he was at the Inn- when he ran down the Butcher's Boy in season 1.
  • Hot Pie making the wolf bread was adorable. In the world of Game of Thrones just getting out of everything like Hot Pie does is probably as good a fate as you can have.
  • "Winterhell." LOL
  • Seems like Cat thinks Bran and Rickon are dead. Kind of wonder where they're going with that plot point  since they keep bringing it up that people think Bran and Rickon are missing as opposed to dead. When in the books, the whole thing with Theon hanging up the 2 burned boys' bodies was to give the world the impression that Bran and Rickon were dead.
  • Talisa's little moment talking about Werewolf Robb to the Lannister prisoners was funny
  • The bit with the Others and the Fist of the First Men was nifty. I like how they've added in how the Others/ White Walkers do their little body part crop circle thing. Its not in the books but its a weird touch that adds to how bizarre the Others/White Walkers seem to be. I liked how Mance also empahsized how all the Night's Watch guys killed at the Fist likely walked away as Wights. Thats just spooky- its not enough that you're killed but then you basically bolster the enemy's ranks in death.
  • Really liked how they shot Theon's escape on horse. Just a very well shot scene and some of the scenery was great.
  • Stannis and Mel's scene... eh. Seemed kind of necessary only to give some explanation as to why Mel couldn't Shadow Baby kill everyone and setup where she's likely going (to likely get Gendry)
  • Finally a mention of Rhaegar! Jorah's delivery was kind of mundane on what was (IMO) one of the best lines in ASoS- "Rhaegar fought valiantly. Rhaegar fought nobly. And Rhaegar died."
  • Kraznys is awesome. The translation scenes have been wonderful and funny.
  • The Tyrion, Pod and Bronn scene.... eh. I laughed at the Mereneese Knot quip, and a little comedy is needed in a show like this. But otherwise, it just felt like the show getting in its Nudity Quota, pretty shamelessly. Not a terrible scene but with everything else going on, likely time better spent with somebody else, like Jon Snow.
  • Nice shout out to the Iron Bank of Braavos by Tyrion as well.
  • "You little bastard." Heh.
  • The whole Jaime and Brienne scene with Locke/Vargo was great. Really well done with the direction and actually creating some tension. Jaime talking Brienne out of trouble, then thinking he's talked his way out of chains only to push his luck. Then the actual scene with his hand getting chopped was brilliant- making it look like Locke would go for his eye and then easing off, only to just smack his hand off, linger a bit and then have the anachronistic version of the Bear and Maiden Fair blast over the credits was great. Reminded me of a Tarantino movie or something.
I don't really get some people's extreme dislike for the credits. Sure, its a more modern rock take on The Bear and Maiden Fair, but in some respects its just as shocking to hear as it was to see Jaime's hand chopped off.

Looking forward to next week.

I could see the attempt at a Tarantino twist with the end credit music. IMO the hand chopping was shocking enough. Didn't have to take it so far by blasting happy tune end credits. It seemed too over the top. -Not to mention I'm not really fond of the melody they composed for the song. Accapella or, "modern".

Edit: Otherwise...I agree on all of your points! ;)

Just found this from an interview with Benioff and Weiss regarding their take on the ending:

“It’s such a shocking ending and when we read the scene in the books  it was so shocking to us,” Weiss says. “To really hammer home the shock  of that moment you need something unexpected. There’s no version of a  traditional score that would keep you as off balance as we wanted that  scene to leaving you feeling.”

“I can’t imagine having that conversation with Ramin [Djawadi] our  composer — ‘Now we need the Jaime-gets-his-hand-chopped-off music,’”  adds Benioff. who made his directorial debut with this episode. “What we always loved in An American Werewolf in London, we see our  hero shot and killed and then his lover runs to embrace his dead body —  it’s a sad ending — but then we cut to black and it’s [the bouncy 1961  Marcell's hit] ‘Blue Moon.’ And that jarring juxtaposition was  fantastic.”

The scenes at Riverrun really were the perfect way to quickly introduce the living Tully's. Blackfish with the walk-off bow shot (and not even bothering to wait to see if the arrow hit) was gold.

The intent is sound. I think its implementation was flawed.  The timing of how Locke revealed himself unaffected by Jaime's charm then the hand chop was superb. The problem is that I wasn't even given a moment to digest it when suddenly the contrasting music took me out of whak, but not in a good way. It was more annoying than anything else.

Could it be the music composition itself? Hard to say. It just felt "wrong" as opposed to "heh, that's friggin cool", and I'm one who usually appreciates such contrasts.

That was great

I wouldn't mind if they find a way to give the Blackfish a bigger role than he has in the books.

Yeah, I read that in some of the torrented/pirated copies of the episode, the music cuts in as Locke is actually cutting off his hand. Which would be odd!

I prefer the way the Bolton men sung the song in the episode since I always thought that song was kind of cheery/upbeat, like a drinking song or something. As a single episode thing, I'm ok with what they did.

Sure, if they had the Benny Hill theme after Ned's death or certain events this year, then yeah, I'd think the showrunners had lost their mind.

Had they used this version for the credits, it would have had more of the intended impact for me. Definitely would have been cooler :) But..I'm not complaining. I love this series. (And I enjoy your reviews!)

And a general question to all; is there anyway someone living in the North Scotland can watch Game of Thrones?

Having just watched the episode, I absoulutely cracked up with the ending. The Bear and the Maiden fair just destroyed the suspense but it was so funny. Nice touch, I say.

Horrible choice for credit song. Absolutely horrible, imagine if that played after Ned Stark's execution? Ridiculous.

I can see what you mean, but the contrast is also brilliant. The scene and the music are both similar and dissimilar at the same time, creating a rather chaotic vibe which fits perfectly with the suddenness of the scene.

I think these are the moments where we see that D & D have never made television before. It was a clumsy and amateurish attempt to be edgy. Just like the trio of wh*res was meant to be... I don't know, funny I guess- and it just looked like a twelve year old boy had got hold of the script. Since they admitted last season that they had a producer representing the pubescent male mindset, you'd think they'd be a little more subtle, but no. They've got a big audience now so they're going to try to be cool.

I found the episode utterly uncharming. The Blackfish was just cranky, not badass. The tone with Dany's scene was all wrong. If it wasn't for the pretty scenery of the Riverlands, there would have been no reason to watch this episode.

I mean it's not like the books were known for their sudden, violent shifts in tone.

While that's true, I never felt negatively towards those shifts in the books.  This was something different.  It gave you no time to come to grips with the immensity that just happened.  Even if they had the first 10 seconds of credits using music more appropriate, then cut into The Bear and the Maiden Fair after, I would have been fine with that.  As it was, it left everyone (besides me because I've read the books) wondering what just happened.

I am glad they decided to cut his hand off in the show.  I was worried they were going to find a workaround.

Ah, I just loved that part in the books. 'Tis going to be great, I say. Although, whether I just read the book slow or not, I would have thought that part would be further towards the end of the series.
