I felt about the same when they had Jaime kill his cousin in order to escape. Killing him was only half of it, the other half being how Jaime manipulated him to gain his trust. Jaime's one of my favourite characters from the books, and it just seemed out of character to me. At least when he pushed Bran out the window he was doing it for Cersei. Killing his cousin was solely for himself. I'm glad people got to see him looking out for Brienne.
In the books, Jaime was pretty despciable. It was largly due to his experience with Brienne that his sense of honor was reawakened. So I think in the show, you're going to see a similar change.
The beauty of characters being shades of grey.

So, "I need you" and "give me another son" why he reachs for her is not romantic? They do not imply his goal is sex?
It's lustful, passionate, hell, some would say forced. But not romantic.
They do not imply his goal is sex? In the books Stannis broods, but he never outright begs Melisandre to sleep with him.
How do we know that? We know Stannis has a close relationship with Mel, trusting her with almost everything. Implying that his one breach into his troubled mind is 'character assassination' is like saying Stannis has slowly ground every inch of humanity away from him.
In fact, he brings up the possibility of creating another shadow himself, but is warned against it by Melisandre.
After being rejected, this implication seems all the more plausible.
He doesn't lust for her in the scene, he doesn't try to force her to do as he says, he simply asks her and gets a response. It wasn't that big of a deal.
To be honest, in front of that crowd, it would completely destroy the image he's being trying to keep since Blackwater.

Or more speficially, the beauty of George Martin's writing. As I am progressively reading the books, I'm finding it real hard to hate any of the major characters. Heck, I previously found no interest or general appeal towards Cersei, but now I'm gradually starting to love her.

Eh. The more I read of Cersei, the less I like her. But I do admit that I greatly enjoyed reading her chapters in the later two books. Though mostly because I enjoyed watching her undermine herself.

Reading about her describing her childhood, how people constantly viewed her and Jaime identical yet were forced to grow up in a separate manner, reflects perfectly on her view on an unjust system which abused her throughout her life. She is a tragic character, which are the ones I tend to like in stories.

The thing is, she became the most powerful woman in Westeroes. She gained control of the very system that worked to put women in skirts while the boys learned how to swing swords. And yet she squandered it all because of her misplaced pride in her own competence, as well as her pathological paranoia.
Perhaps it's why some people love her. Flawed characters are some of the best in my opinion. The best example I can give is Thomas Covenant.
I absolutley hate his guts, but I love the character and at the same time I sympathise greatly for him. I mean, he's a biggest **** to anybody anywhere for the remainder of the book, but when you step into a day of his real life it brings around a sense of empathy I've never felt before in a book.

All we've really seen so far this season is set up. Which means there will be at least one blood bath sooner or later. I'm expecting the season to end with the one epic catastrophe. But other characters will likely die as well. Is anyone else feeling that tension?

I imagine your feelings on several characters would change as you're reading A Song of Ice and Fire.

Having read the novels, all I can say is this: You have no idea.

He makes me want to rhyme. And don't disrepect your king. Joffrey would turn into that lovable bastard soon enough.

Let's agree to disagree? It's apparent both of are adament in our beliefs.
All I am going to say is that HBO handled the romance of a distant, stoic character such as Eddard beautifully, that I had hoped Stannis would receive a similar, subtle treatment instead of degrading his moments with Melisandre to trysts commonly found in a trashy novel.
PS - Stannis has plenty of humanity in the books. Granted it's easy to miss (many are buried beneath subtle stares, reflections and the occasional doubt), but I firmly believe George R.R Martin proved that a cold, ridgid character like Stannis can be human without a passionate affair.
PPS - I am upset with this scenario because Stannis is a wonderfully complex and grey character that has been criminally ignored and mishandled in the HBO adaption in my opinion. It seems that the writers are choosing to magnify one particular aspect of his character and inflate it to an absurd level, which is tragic, because Stannis is without a doubt one of the most interesting figures in the entire ASoIaF saga; George R.R Martin deserves more recognition for any of his Davos/Stannis dialogue exchanges, as they are absolutely phenomenal.

Speaking of, I can understand her, even sympathize to a small degree, but the lengths at which she goes to enact what she feels is right is too much. Too many people get affected, too many get hurt.

And that's why she is an understandable character.
If it weren't for stuff like that and Joffrey, I think I could have felt sorry for her. I understand her, I like her as a character, but I don't feel sorry for her.
Just as Prince said, it goes to personal preference. I at first saw Cersei as nothing more than a b*tch, but after reading the first two books, after learning about her backstory I started to sympathize with her. That doesn't mean her actions are justifiable.
Oh and BTW, understanding someone is basically the same thing as sympathizing.

She tries and tries, but she ended up with a husband who didn't love her, a lover she couldn't love openly, a crazed son, and all that doesn't leave a lot of room for a clear head.
Still doesn't excuse her numerous transgressions.

Characters will die soon. This last episode was a lot of posturing for at least 2 major events in the book. Given the title of the next episode, all I can say is...watch this next episode. The third book (this season and next) are full of violence and power struggles.mousestalker wrote...
